Congrats Zerphen on becoming our new Forest Keeper. May the forest be kept exquisitely.
Furthermore, a thank you to Ruinenlust for giving me the honor to be the Election Discussion Facilitator this time 'round. Here's hoping I didn't fall short of any secret expectations my anxiety has assured me must exist.
Not at all! I think you did very well, and that the whole affair was very well coordinated by you and the others who spoke up and asked questions. Having the dispatch and rolling out a set of questions early on is already doing the job very satisfactorily in my opinion, and you also had several follow-up questions which were well-thought out and covered all of the bases. I also think you did things very neutrally and evenly, especially in light of the...wide range, shall we say, in the length and quality of the various responses you received. You are most welcome to take on that role again in a future election, along with everyone else who has held that role before. :-)

Wow! Mozworld being knocked down to fourth? I can see Uan being way up there but still, that's historic in its own right.
Not going to lie, there's something a little amusing about the former-WA governor and current-WA successor going at it for 9th vs. 10th place. But in the end, the OG forest keeper and delegate is still worth as much as them combined. xD
Glad to see I'm still (somehow) in the top 40... in the sense that I'm 40th, right behind Einswenn. I probably could do better if I actually answered issues. Competition must've died out a bit cause I used to be 42nd and I don't remember doing anything.
Edit: Also, while on the topic of statistics, crossed 18 billion population within the past couple of days. I'm beginning to feel old... >_>
Top-30 gang represent 😎
I was very glad to see that my puppet Goldenmouth had gotten onto the list for the first time.
Hi! i am travelling for many regions, and i decided to have a few days rest here
Howdy y'all!
A Toast of Congratulations to our new Forest Keeper Zerphen! Hip hip hurray! :-)
Welcome to Forest and enjoy your stay! :-)
BTW, Happy Belated St Patrick's Day to everyone. :-)

☀️🌷 Happy Equinox Day! 🪻☀️
The days are rapidly lengthening in the Northern Hemisphere, and rapidly shortening in the Southern Hemisphere. Because the winter here has been extremely mild, we already have a few little flowers like snowdrops and crocuses, and even the daffodils are starting to bloom. Within just a few short months, it will be summer again. The years go by faster and faster every time: the months are like weeks, and the weeks like a day or two. Ruinenlust is celebrating the Equinox with a special-use flag for these few days, before we bring out the Spring flag.
Also, I very much like Einswenn's classification of the term following the March election as the "Summer Term," which would make the post-September election the "Winter Term." It's not universally true, but I suspect that the vast majority of our community members hail from the Northern Hemisphere.
I am wholeheartedly biased towards seasons as summers and winters are my most favourite ones and I view the terms based on their “middle month” that luckily match my preferences :D
I am very very slowly moving up the greenness index, give it a couple years and maybe i'll be in the top 30 lol.

I might well need a few thousands years to break into the top 30... Slowly climbing up from the bottom 10 will take a while.
It's a shame that my environment is so awful on my nation, I guess it reflects the dystopia world we could end up in if things don't change ...
Hopefully, one day, the world can be as green as ransium is...
Have a great day...

IC:
As a result of the underwhelming performance in the march 2024 Greenness Index the Ownzonean parliament has approved a proposal to remove our current head of state from office effective immediately. As the head of state is normally a position that requires the person to "transcend party politics" various outsiders are considered for the position. Suggestions are welcome!
IC:
Following a unanimous vote by the Cabinet of the Republic of Kannap, the Green Index Standards Office has been established to create a set of goals to make Kannap a more green nation than it already is. The Office also holds authority to enact policies and standards that will help the nation strive to meet these goals.
The Green Index Standards Office was established by the Sanders-Wood cabinet following the publishing of - at the time - the most recent Greenness Index rankings of nations in Forest. The Office was established due to displeasure among the leadership of Kannap in regards to Kannap's position in the rankings.
Tim Reynolds was appointed as head of the Green Index Standards Office, which was inserted as an agency working under the authority of both the Ministry of Climate Policy and the Ministry of Nature and Conservation. The chief goal of the Office is to implement policies and set standards to allow Kannap to become an even more green nation than it already is and, therefore, move up the Greenness Index rankings. The Office has also created a set of goals for these policies to strive to achieve.
Green Index Goals
The Green Index Standards Office has created a set of goals to strive towards. The policies and standards that the Office establishes will help in furthering Kannap's aims for meeting these goals. The Office has authority to establish new goals once these goals are met.

Huh. And here I thought I was the only one who thought of them that way. xD I'm genuinely surprised I've never actually called them that here cause that's almost exclusively how I interpret them.
Though I concede I have stopped myself at least once on account of (aside from the hemisphere thing) the fact that it's actually more accurate to call them spring/autumn terms...* but it doesn't feel as appropriate for some reason (and also hemisphere thing again).
* Explanation being that a sizeable chunk of the actual winter/summer are taken up by the elections themselves now that we've dialed them back from the middle of the month (which would've been a lot more even-steven) along with government activity usually being even more quiet in the latter seasons at least from past experiences of the last couple years. Doesn't change the fact that I still prefer winter/summer terms for the terms
Edit2: Oh I forgot about this. I always forget it comes on an earlier day in September. Too bad I don't have anything epic planned for today beyond catching up on my irl duties I've neglected on account of being unwell. (Went to my doctor's recently, seems like I may have sleep apnea and potentially just bad sleeping routine but we're checking vitamins/iron/etc. again and taking a sleep test just to be safe. Still not sure why my whole family's got similar problems but it's at least progress.) But it is about the time for me to put my flea/tick preventative on my cats again. Except this stray cat I barely managed to get indoors. No idea how I'm going to get them to the shelter at this rate. (Plus I'm also making Ukrainian eggs at the community center group I've recently been hanging out with. Truth be told, they're almost all elderly women. Which I have been described as being one of.)
Edit: Also on account of her post now being extremely close to not even being loaded on the first "load more" I'd like to repost Zerphen's government job postings announcement since I know what it's like and who knows when my next tangentially relevant post will be ;p page=rmb/postid=55264141
Edit3: Also. Another fun fact about Zerphen being elected: she is one of only two (other being Palos, who also got the highest percentage win of all time period) to be elected without previously serving in a cabinet. (Ransium was around before elections and I myself was technically cartographer for a month max.)
So, some completely random thoughts on language.
The political right seems to be a lot smarter than the political left when it comes to slogans. We have a new idiot party over here called Reform UK, which is just a great name for a new party, as shallow voters who are hungry for change are going to see it as something positive, when actually they're all about Liz Truss style unfunded spending and hopelessly hopeful promises, with a sideline of Keep Britain British and environmental irresponsibility. Likewise, in the States, Make America Great Again is an excellent slogan tied to a cretinous ideology. Phrases like Don't Step On Me, and Sovereign Citizen, they're all awesome soundbites which disguise the lack of intellectual rigour.
Meanwhile on the left you have phrases which leave room for criticism attached to great ideas.
So here's the thing: I'm a feminist, and an atheist, and an environmentalist and I believe black lives matter. But these words are all really badly picked.
Feminism implies its for women and about women, and the nature of the word makes men reluctant to associate with it. Its almost like saying "I'm feminine", which a lot of men don't want to say. Equally, it leaves the door open for stuff like TERF and MRA, as the word feminist is itself seemingly non-inclusive of any gender but cis female. But feminism is a vital set of ideas, based around gender equality and fairness. So to me, we should call it that: Gender Fairness. I mean, Equalism could work too, but that has communist undertones which again open the door to attack from those who would then see it as in opposition to economic freedom. Fairness, who can argue with that?
Likewise, atheism, its basically saying this is a belief system about denying God. Which it isn't, really. It's about deriving moral values from your own judgement, from discourse and rationalism, and from innate human goodness. So I prefer to use the term Humanism, because its about believing in humans, not denying God. Calling it atheism makes it an attack on religion, which invites conflict and "your side or mine", and paints Christians and other religious people as the enemy, and makes for aggression on both sides. On the other hand, Humanism just indicates a belief in human morality, and thus can be something Christians et al can see as something positive, and which humanists in turn can see qualities of in Christians.
Environmentalism should be an okay word, but it implies that we're just talking about the natural world, or the world around us, when it's also about how we live as people. I think Responsibalism makes more sense, or Caretaking, as this suggests that the emphasis is on human choices and being good keepers of our world and our future. It's not just about saving animals, it's about caring for the human race too. I'm not an environmentalist because I expect the natural world to end. It's really resilient, and has seen epochs come an go with life finding a way. I'm an environmentalist because I want a world the human race can survive in, and one which they can continue to find beautiful and abundant.
And Black Lives Matter. Is it any wonder that people went "don't all lives matter?" or took it as implying that non-black lives don't matter either? I mean, I get that black people are the most oppressed, but isn't the phrase one that invites an easy counterposition from the right? I would have preferred it to be Black Lives Matter Too, with the subheading All Lives Matter. Get to the counterargument first, and that makes it clear that the problem is that currently in most systems black lives are being treated as if they're worth less. This makes it less a declaration of black people being most important to being one that points out the problem. I mean, BLM as a rallying cry has probably been one of the left's most memetically successful slogans, but it also encourages entrenchment of the right into the "what about white people then?" mindset, which is dangerous and leads to racism.
Pointing to an example of how changing words actually changes perception, I'd showcase the rebranding of disabled people as people with disabilities. The phrasing matters, because "disabled person" implies that their personhood is diminished. So words matter, a lot, and the left has historically been really bad at presenting their ideas compared to the right. The superiority of those ideas (admittedly in my opinion) matters only if people start digging deep. The superficial examination, where opinions are formed, matters more to Joe Average. Do you think a white American man is going to shy away from the ideas of a great America, of rights for men, of being for-life, of being free to bear arms, of opposing tyranny, and so on? The right has always been better at language that speaks to the heart, the left has to appeal to rationalism, and that's why the right is winning.
So what do you all think?
As an agnostic (according to this video, agnostic atheist), I did find this here video on that subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWhz3SXPWkg in which humanism is unfortunately already taken to mean something different from both agnosticism and atheism. Alas. Neat video though.
Everything else I think I agree with but I'm sure there are other reasons they don't work as well. But on the subject of leftists having a bad wrap with names (whether self-given or given by the right), just look at Social Justice Warrior, Carbon Tax, Global wa-I mean Climate Chan-er, Crisis. Nope yup calling it a crisis is definitely going to make things better with no ramifications. *sniff*
(Though even I have to admit it's probably more accurate at this point.)

Once again the Greeness Index demonstrates that if you want to be number 1 at something, make up the rules to the game
Loaded phrases like "MAGA" are effective because they're marketed towards certain people. The person who believes that America was great once upon a time is likely ignorant on things like historical injustices against minorities. Do Japanese Americans whose elders were interned believe America was great? Do Aboriginal people dealing with the consequences of generational trauma?
I feel that the 'all-in-all alternatives' like "all lives matter" and "equalism" are ignorant to the original phrases and the particular meaning/purpose behind them. They're reductive of the particular issue at hand, especially the ones affecting minorities. BLM addresses specific problems like police brutality and systematic discrimination, etc. that are and have been widely perpetuated against black Americans. It's not being substituted or including "all lives matter" because it's not about that, it's about addressing those systematic and racial inequalities, which aren't faced by 'all lives' in this context. Is average joe actually concerned about these issues or are they just diverting away from these difficult and uncomfortable topics by discussing the specifics of the language that's being used? Same thing for feminism: What part of promoting women's rights is reductive of men's rights, considering that feminists have consistently concerned themselves with gender equality and men's rights? AFAIK, TERFs are a fringe group, MRAs are a thinly-veiled cover for misogynists, and ALM was formed to specifically reject and oppose BLM.
So is the issue at hand actually wording, or is it that Joe Average is not concerned with these topics because of wilful ignorance? Of course the white American male isn't going to shy away from this allure of the "good old days", where his privileges were largely unchallenged and dominative of society. And Joe isn't shy about scapegoating <insert minority> for his perils instead of the system. They're not willing to actually introspect beyond dog whistles and be empathetic or understanding.
~Round Two of Appointments~
I have received a few applications for various government positions and after some deliberation and advice from Garbelia I would like you all to welcome our newest members of government.
Ruinenlust, could you please appoint the following people:
Jutsa as the Foreign Affairs Minister, with powers over Appearance, Communications, Embassies, and Polls. I believe Jutsa has long been a positive face in this community, and given their already existent connections across NationStates, their proven reliability over many terms of government, and their interest in addressing and evaluating our current embassies I believe they are the perfect person for this position.
The Realizer as the Culture and Events Minister, with powers over Appearance, Communications, and Polls. Realizer is a new face to our community, but after speaking with them at length on some events we could have and seeing their enthusiasm to be involved I believe they are a great person for this role. While they are a newer nation, they have been around on NationStates since 2020 across a few different nations, now having settled here. We have spent a great deal of time in telegrams bouncing around ideas, and they plan to start a weekly trivia in the style of Only Connect questions.
McClandia Doge 2 as the Forest Ranger, with powers over Communications and Border Control. They have been quite active on the RMB for a while, and having served as an Election Officer twice now they have proven their reliability in this position.
Uan aa Boa as the Wise Elder, with powers over Appearance. I believe Uan is a strong voice of reason in our community and I look forward to their advice in any big decisions in the term to come.
While I have finalized these appointments, there are still a few positions open. Namely, I still need someone to fill the Chief Editor position, which will be in charge of our regional newspaper. This will be quite involved, but whoever wants to do this won't be alone, as we can share the workload.
The position for Chief of Directories is also still open. I believe Garbelia has a solid plan for how we can fix up our government dispatch system, but if you think you can contribute in any way you should reach out to me or Garbelia.
Government positions aren't limited to what all I've listed here. If you have any ideas for how you can contribute to Forest, reach out to me and propose them :] Anything that can positively contribute to Forest's culture is something I would love to hear about.
~No Big Banks Chess Arena~
I have been speaking with New United Common-lands about the possibility of Forest joining The Region That Has No Big Banks in co-hosting an interregional chess event. I briefly mentioned it in my previous post, but if you are interested in learning about this event you should read their dispatch and Jutsa's post from a few weeks ago about TRTHNBB inviting us to co-host this event.
NUCL wants to get Forest's official confirmation that this would be something we want to do, so I have decided to open a poll on whether we will officially participate. We can either:
Be the co-host of this event.
Join as an official participant rather than co-hosting.
Don't officially join as a participating region.
In all cases, Forestians would be free to participate in this chess event as they please. If we participate officially or co-host, we are eligible for the region based rewards such as "Best Scoring Member Region" and "Best Average Scoring Member Region." Co-hosting would involve no greater time investment from most Forestians beyond me and The Realizer helping them out with the event in any way we can.
I believe it would be best if we co-host this event with TRTHNBB. This would be a great show of our continued friendship as embassy allies, we have a good few chess players in this community, and I just don't see any point in not joining them officially for this event. Regardless, this is something that will have Forest's name on it, so I want to ensure we are all okay with this as a community.
This is a simple majority vote. I will consider joining as a co-host and joining as a participant as both "Yes" votes for wanting to join this event, so should "Yes" votes outweigh "No" votes I will pick between which kind of yes vote has the majority. The poll will be open for three days. I would love to hear everyone's reasoning for supporting or opposing us joining in this event, so be sure to share your reasoning in the RMB!
I think you’re missing the point at what CA was saying.
Every slogan is marketed towards certain people. The Left just tends to come up with slogans that highlight aspects of their movements that are particularly off-putting to large portions of the population. You can spend all day spinning theories as to why the other side is wrong or stupid or whatever, but it doesn’t change the fact that the slogan is inherently divisive and poorly markets the movement to people they’re trying to reach.
And frankly, it’s much easier to change phrasing than to try and win over the other side/average Joe by explaining to them how stupid they are for not understanding the intentions behind a poorly phrased slogan.
“The person who believes America was great once upon a time is likely ignorant…”
^^^I know many, many, hardcore leftists (indeed, most leftists I know) who believe America was/is great or still want America to be great. So selling MAGA, purely as a 4-worded slogan, isn’t that hard for anyone who believes in American greatness—regardless of what you think that looks like. It’s not a phrase that requires constant unpacking, like “feminism,” or triggers an instant counter like BLM. It’s a simply matter of syntax.
I don't think I missed the point. Saying "Black Lives Matter" after Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner were all killed shouldn't be "off-putting" nor an "inherently divisive" statement. While some people may interpret "All Lives Matter" as an inclusive remark, BLM addresses the fact that, at least based on the numbers, black lives haven't mattered in America for a long time. We're not changing this phrase to appeal to this average public demographic, we're not adding a little subtitle that says "x and y matters too..", everyone's free to make their own movement saying that. But nobody was saying ALM before Eric Garner, so in this instance there wasn't an attempt to make the language more inclusive for the public, it was an insidious, coded language that sought to discredit BLM. Now when we say Black Lives Matter all of a sudden it's not inclusive and we should care. Why?
I'm sure that many leftists believe that America is great. I should clarify that I'm not saying that America isn't or wasn't great in many ways; it's a beautiful country with strong values like the right to self-determination, jazz and blues, a first world country that has better standards than many other places, and a cultural melting pot. What I am highlighting are the past injustices committed by America (and Canada, where I live) that affect how people, particularly certain minorities, view their relationship with the country. I'm a visible minority and my experience has been wildly different to people who straightforwardly agree with that statement. We all want America to be great. But MAGA does not represent that, unless we decide that we will skip all the nuance behind loaded phrases. It's arguably as loaded with meaning and nuance, if not more than "feminism" and "BLM". Make America Great Again for who? When was America great? When white males had all the special advantages?
Decided to create another stat map. It's a new one; something I call "militancy" which measures for defense spending and pacifism. I also considered adding Foreign Aid as a green axis, but I kinda wanted to try a two-colour spectrum (since I know 3 can get messy and also blend in with the wilderness/unknown colours) and also felt like defense/pacifism alone might be best, but let me know what you think.
I also added parts per mille death to war. I did make Roless and LD a touch redder just because they are SO militant, buuut for all intents and purposes they're sort-of "normal". I was surprised they didn't have too many deaths to war though, thought in LD I suppose everyone dies before that anyway. What surprised me the most though were the ones that had the most deaths. 1.6% of folks die to war in both Calenmor and Velichye, which I was not expecting. But even more than that is York Zionia, at 2.8% - which I never expected to be so militant!
But the crown at 3.1% (at least of mapped nations, probably not in Forest, not sure) actually goes to Verdant Haven, at 3.1 - while also being the only mapped nation to achieve >top 15% in defense and pacifism. Well done? xD Genuine surprises, all around. (Note that no one outside of top-defense-spenders had war deaths.)
Retroactive Edit: Also, I just have to say - I cannot believe three major players on the map CTE'd between my making this and three days ago when I made the Politicube map. reeeeeeeEEEEE
Calenmor, Atsvea, Ruinenlust, Lord Dominator, and 5 othersMcClandia Doge 2, Zerphen, Vantser, Garbelia, and LontraNutria
Nor have any lives except rich old conservative white male lives and unborn baby lives mattered for a very long time. But our attention spans run fifteen seconds, tops, so groups like BLM have to be pithy. Andy Warhol got the number right but missed the unit of measure.
Do we have any of those remaining? Really? What we call "left" or "liberal" today would have been called "moderate conservative" in the 1980s.
Well, yes, if you ask the rich old white males who write the histories, make the laws for other people to follow, and order the police around as their own private army. What you mean is that their America stopped being great for them when their socio-political inferiors started asking uncomfortable questions. Don't expect "America" to live up to its rhetoric, because that rhetoric was never meant to do anything except pacify underlings.
