. . . ![]() Forest Roleplay . . . The Team . The Setting The setting that Forest Roleplay exists in is a semi-hybrid of a modern world set in 2019, and small fantasy elements! While the world has progressed as worlds do, eventually reaching a modern age, it has been assisted in some capacity by religious entities, or other more fantastical discoveries from nations. While fantasy is present, say prayers coming true, divine intervention, or certain nations having access to enhanced weapons or technology based on say magical crystals or individuals who are enhanced! This world is a mixture of optimists, nation builders, and folks absolutely concerned with the environment! History shows there has been and will be plenty of disagreement, but the world regardless will continue moving. . Roleplay Guidelines and Mechanics In Forest RP, freedom of storytelling and worldbuilding is top priority, but to make sure RP remains fun for everyone, it would be amazing if you could follow these guidelines!
Besides those guidelines, it would be good to note these mechanics!
. Member List If your nation name is on this list, you are part of the RP, please (so Rogue doesn't forget) DM or contact him if you apply to be on the map RP. This is here for tracking (and sanity purposes) Rogue River . . . |

Our photo contest - which I hope will one day be referred to as an annual tradition - officially starts! The photos that can be submitted to the contest will be centered upon certain Nature-related themes each year. By taking the suggestions on the RMB into account, I have designated 3 themes for this year's contest: 1) Trees The participants can post up to 5 pictures each. It doesn't matter under which category (trees, water, or animals) the pictures are posted. The overall number should just NOT exceed 5 for easier judging. I have already opened a topic for the contest in the regional forum. You can post your photos I think that the photo contest shall be open to the members of Forest, and the members of our embassy regions. If members of our embassy regions are unable to post in the forum, they can share the links to their photos on our RMB, and perhaps Gil zardon could re-post their photos in the forum on their behalf in order to keep all the competing photos in one place. The photographs can be posted until December 23th, 23.59 GMT. The voting will be accomplished via a forum poll. The voting will start December 24th, 23.59 GMT and it will end December 31, 23.59 GMT. In this way, we will have chosen this year's best photos in the first minutes of 2016! (Needless to say, please no puppeteering in the voting.) Acknowledgments will be given to the photographers in the first 3 ranks of each category. The photos will be published and the photographers will be publicly acclaimed in our newspaper, Additionally, a collage of the 1st photos of each category will be prepared for interested nations to use as a primary banner to applaud the winners. Re-setting the primary banner to the collage is recommended for the participants, but not obligatory. Furthermore, the residents of Forest are reserved the right to decide upon whether they would like to change the current flag of Forest and replace it by one of the winning photos. And off it goes! Good luck to all! | The votes are in, and the winners of this year's photo contest are here. Ladies and gentlemen, please behold 2016's best photos in Forest! Welcome to the week before Earth Day! I know you are all very excited to see what Forest has in store to celebrate the day which defines our regions heart and soul. Well I am glad you asked. This year we are going to celebrate earth day with a special challenge to Forest, and our embassy allies. The challenge is simple. Below is a list of activities that I and the community of Forest came up with that help our earth remain sustainable and beautiful as well as instilling a sense of connection to our planet. You will attempt to complete tasks on the list and submit pictures of the deed when possible. Completing each task will net you a certain amount of points. Completing all the tasks somehow will award major bonus points. Then, depending on how many participants we have there will be winners in Three different categories. Top Score - Individual, Top Score - Region, and Most Creative Submissions. We will also compile the photos in a later dispatch to show off how hard you all worked to keep our planet happy. And don't worry, while I will be on the hunt myself to show my support for the environment I won't be awarding any points to myself. Scavenger List: 1. Plant a Tree or Tend to your Garden 2. Start or Maintain compost pile 3. Bike or Walk to Work 4. Start or Maintain Recycling in your home 5. Clean trash up in affected areas (Forest, Beach, Parks Etc.) 6. Invite someone not involved in Forest to do one of these tasks with you or by themselves. 7. Go vegetarian or vegan for one day. 8. Skip or Shorten your avg. daily shower time. 9. Taking pictures of nature on your hike, bike, walk etc. 10. Unplug devices which draw energy even when not in use. (Chargers, TV's, Game Consoles etc) 11. Use your own reusable straw, cup, or top when going to restaurants. 12. Line Dry Laundry 13. Use reusable canvas bags for grocery runs or other shopping. How do I participate? To participate, please go Competition not your thing? You don't need a competition to help the earth, and you've already been doing all these things. Well go ahead and tell us all about it on our RMB! I will be keeping an eye out for posts relating to the environment and adding them to the dispatch at the end of the competition. Happy Hunting and Happy Earth Day! UPDATE: We have a winner! Love and Nature posted the most tasks of their list during the competition period. Congrats to them! And just in case they wanted to flaunt it to the world, I made them a cute little signature image to show the world:

| . ![]() Forestian Autumnal Writing Contest - Winners . The entries have been judged, and out of a very high quality of submissions the three judges have decided on winners for both categories. Well done to everyone who submitted, and a special congratulations to our chosen winners! Prose Winner: Mzeusia In The Grip of the Blizzard You’re in a field. It is blanketed with snow, undisturbed except for the deep imprints that your boots left. Your beeline to the tree under which you stand is the only thing upsetting the winter scene. If When you came out here, it must have been calm weather. Unfortunately, you join me at a rather inopportune time. As you can tell, the wind is moving across the field with vengeance in its heart. Its speed will only increase and then I will have to stop this chat to focus on survival. I apologise, but that’s how it has to be. You have never noticed me, but I’ve seen you every time you’ve come here. I’ve watched your distant form traipse over here, growing and growing until you stand where you do now. Last time you brought a child. It looked like you so I assume it’s yours. It was nice to see the young girl’s wonder as she looked up and I was looking forward to seeing her again, but that’s fine. I do hope you’re well today. I hope life hasn’t been too tough for you and that that boss you always complain about has been tamed. I would recommend having some strong words with him, but I’m just a leaf so what do I know. Good luck whatever you decide to do. Oh my, the wind is really getting strong now. I’ll have to leave you soon but for now, you’re standing on the ground looking at the tree above and I know you might not think too much about the individual leaves. Maybe you are marvelling at the beauty of the isolated tree, thrusting outwards from the snow. Maybe you are wondering how it could keep so calm despite the winds that now rip through the branches, like grape-shot across the deck of a ship. You appear to be staying here and so I welcome you, for it would be impolite not to and your company is always nice. My name, as I’ve told you every time you have been here, is Oleg and I hang upon the ends of a twisted branch. Usually I am content with a life of calmness, but right now you find me struggling to hold on to the rough bark. It is during these times of turbulence that the path of the future spits into two. I, along with my companions could be hurled away from our mother and cast into a world where we are not cared for and where we have no choice but to perish. You, no doubt, do not realise our plight and you do not realise that I, Oleg, cannot afford to leaf this place. I hope you’ll excuse the pun. Maybe it’s a good thing you can’t hear. There is a girl you see, and her name is Irina. She is the most beautiful leaf for miles around and she hangs not far away from where I am. Irina is far more graceful than I and better able to cope with harsh conditions like the one we are experiencing now. We are but leaves and to you, we may be insignificant but this is our lives and it is all we have. The other leaves on the tree appear to me like shadows or blurry figures on the periphery, whereas Irina…she is everything to me and I always make time for her. The day started pleasantly enough, with a gentle, cool breeze but the wind is picking up now. I guess I should focus on trying to stay on here for Irina is everything to me, and if I lose her, I have lost it all. The wind snatches at my body, thrashing me about like a toy in the mouth of a dog. I slam into the bark of the branch holding me down and almost black out from the impact. For a moment, the pain does not come and I am limp in the grasp of the elements. Then, I hear her screams, grit my teeth and I fight my way into consciousness again. “Thank you, Oleg, you saved me. I love you.” “I love you too. I’ll never let you go. You cannot fall.” I whisper into her ear. Her head falls against my chest and a tear trickles down her gentle cheek. Another leaf falls by us, screaming as he is swirled away into the white abyss below. I stifle a cry but there is nothing to be done about him now. I don’t know how many others will fall but my only concern now is Irina. We stay like this, Irina and I, huddled in each other’s warmth and security. The wind fights back of course. It never gives up easily and today it appears particularly furious. A small chunk of wood flies like an arrow towards us. I see its malevolent stare as I gaze above Irina’s shoulder. If I don’t do anything, it will hit her, but moving now, in so perilous a situation might well be fatal for us both. I steel myself, anticipate the pain in order to prepare my body, and sharply twist around on the branch. I wobble and we shout out; our cries being lost to all but the closest of our siblings. They themselves are locked in the struggle to survive and can do nothing. The surprise movement had caught Irina, my love, off guard and she stumbles. My arms snap out towards her at lightning speed and I battle to stabilise her. She looks into my eyes, confusion and gratitude flickering over the surface. Suddenly, the sharpest pain exploded into the middle of my back. The piece of wood has impacted. It is whipped onwards by the terrible winds but a splinter remains, and that is all that is needed. My back straightens in agony and my grip clenches, fingers digging into Irina’s shoulders. She knows now what has happened and fights to keep us together and on the branch. I on the other hand, only make things worse as my arms go limp and I cry out, in shock, anger and pain. She screams as I begin to tumble backwards. Her face is a sea of disbelief and devastation, the raw emotion creeping into her eyes as she realises what might happen. My limbs flail as, as though in slow motion, I am being sucked away by the winds, unable to hold on any longer. Her hand shoots out to reach mine and our hands grip in tense hope. We hold each other like these in the midst of the ruin around us. Then, our hands slip. Our fingertips touch for the briefest of moments but she can go no further lest she fall away herself, and I can do nothing to anchor my body to the branch. We both know what will happen, and so I stare. I stare at her face with the burning intensity of a forest fire. I will not see Irina again, and so I commit every detail to memory. Her eyes filled with the knowledge of imminent loss and yet the wild, untameable, impossible hope of somehow reuniting with me. Her face, as beautiful as anything could be. It is my fire in the blistering cold and I memorise each crease and smooth surface. Her hair whips around her as if possessed and her lips, red and shining appear to me like a lighthouse to a half-drowned sailor. Her lips, from which the most heart-wrenching pain now bolts, I sear into my mind. The world takes me in a deadly grasp. It seizes me and hurls my frail body away from the one I love. The last thing I see is Irina screaming into the elements. It is a helpless, hopeless gesture, a futile sound and yet I am determined to remember it. I see her mouth moving but hear no words. They have been taken from us by the cruel wind and I can only watch and stretch out to her, even as I am caught in the middle of the blizzard. I am still stretching when she disappears from sight, looking so pitiful there on that branch. As I am swept along by snow, rain and piercing cold, my eyes bore into the place where last I saw her as if I can bring her to me or me to her. I think not of myself, and only of her as I am taken far, far away from all that I have known. My eyes close, and I see her image there. Her frozen visage engraved into my consciousness and even as I slam into the packed snow, even as my very breath is flung from me in one brutal movement, even as the light fades, I remember her face. I remember her embrace, her warmth, her voice and I know, that I will never forget her. Irina, the leaf, the love of my life. It is hard to pull of a story using second person narrator without the concept feeling forced, so Mzeusia deserves this recognition for doing so. While in some areas the author resorts to a few cliches, this does not detract from the quality of the piece or its clever construction. Runner up: Uan aa Boa Plato and the sycamore leaves Philosophy has long been preoccupied with the question of identity. What makes two sycamore trees in some sense the same despite the obvious fact that they are different? For the ancient Athenian writer Plato the answer lay in an immaterial world of Forms or Ideas. Though his works are far from being a systematic exposition, he appears to have believed that the physical world we see around us is a pale and imperfect copy of a greater reality that consists of perfect Forms. In this realm will be the Form or Idea of a sycamore tree, and two sycamores here on earth are related because they share to some extent in that perfect Form, while different because they share in it only imperfectly. Similarly, there are many things in the world that are more or less round, but only one perfect circle out there in the realm of the Forms. For Plato, the successful sculptor would be one who understood the Form of sculpture and was able to realise it, while the successful judge would be one who understood the Form of justice. In his book The Republic, Plato set out how an ideal society would be governed by philosopher kings painstakingly educated to access the ultimate Form of the Good. To a modern audience this sounds nonsensical, so it can be surprising to realise the extent to which it has influenced our world. Most strikingly, Plato is arguably the inventor of Christianity. The medieval concept of God as perfect, immaterial, omniscient and all powerful, the God who may or may not be able to create a rock so heavy he can’t lift it, owes much more to Plato than to the Hebrew God who spoke from a burning bush and went out before his people as a pillar of fire. St Paul, author of much of the New Testament, was steeped in Platonic philosophy and when he said that we see now through a glass darkly (1 Corinthians 13:12) he was actually quoting Plato’s Phaedrus. The belief that this world is fallen and fleeting while eternal perfection lies beyond is Plato’s creation. So too is the corollary that matter is inferior to spirit, work inferior to thought and the body subservient to the mind. When we divide school children into jocks and nerds, jobs into white and blue collar and health into physical and mental we are still trapped in Plato’s legacy. Sitting under a sycamore tree as the autumn leaves fall it’s obvious how different each individual one is. It would never for a moment occur to me that two of them might be identical, or like any leaf anywhere in the forest. I wonder what Plato would have made of it. Would he have thought this difference a sign of imperfection? Is there somewhere out there a perfect tree which these ones are failing to be like? The idea is ridiculous. The beautiful colours of autumn are the shades of death and decay, transient in the last degree. My thoughts on the matter are part of my squishy, physical, embodied brain. Everything is here. Now. This is the only piece of prose that was written as non-fiction. An engaging and interesting introduction into philosophical concepts ably communicated using allegory and example. Special mentions: Gnejs – Some really interesting ideas here and it's nice to see magic realism getting some love. With a little more polishing I think this could have been in the top 2. Leaving through the lake Upon leaving the bar, I went straight to a nearby supermarket, picked up a bottle of Pennypacker Bourbon, and headed towards the lake. That area was so very picturesque. A small peninsula, stretching out in the water, covered in trees whose leaves were in that striking state between absolute prime and imminent decay. This led to their colours balancing between being intense and restrained at the same time, like they on the one hand wanted the whole world to experience a detonation of affect, but on the other hand they were too exhausted to completely carry it out, leaving them lingering somewhere in between. Even at that hour, when darkness descended on my new hometown, this rich battle between fatigue and energy dominated the scene. I walked to the very end of the peninsula and sat down by the water. It smelled of autumn, and the prospect of one day crossing this big black entity of a lake all of a sudden seemed intoxicating. If I left my eyes lingering on the horizon for long enough, I could swear I saw something halo-like scuffling for space at the end of my world of vision. “Beautiful” “No local folk look at it the way you do anymore”. “No one cares about the lake anymore, it’s just the place that carries your boat and increases the value of your house. It’s only you kids, who come here from the outside, that appreciate the lake and who the lake appreciates. When you drink and jump off the bridge, fighting the currents, you see her for what she truly is." “You can’t possibly be that old,” I said. “You must look for what is now in the margin, but what was once in the centre, what might seem wrong, but when you look at it for long enough, you will see that it is right.” “You are a fool. But it was the opposite of fools that took us down this path. Maybe we need fools to find our way back. Go, drink, jump from the bridge, survive the current and play with your perspectives.” “Hey, what’s your name?” Sitting by the lake on a dazzling first night, filled with all too many impressions, her words left me feeling empowered, rather than sad. I stood up, closed up the bottle, and started walking in the direction the Juggler had pointed when talking about the bridge. I walked off the peninsula, and headed through the woods. The darkness was engulfing. Moving closer, the dividing line materialized, and I was able to differentiate between land and water, preventing me from stepping too far. Following what seemed to be a lakeside path, I started running. I ran, not sure why, and in moving faster everything around me lost whatever form it had possessed before. It wasn’t darkness as the absence of light anymore, but instead something otherwise. As if light had never been, and an opposite was not needed to define blackness itself. I reached another peninsula, and after having made my way to its peak, I saw the lights. I felt like I was watching and experiencing something completely unknown. Everything around me was pitch-black, the water and the woods, and the roads leading up to the bridge on either side were nowhere to be seen. In the middle of an all-encompassing lack of illumination, there were five symmetrically positioned beacons of light. As I moved closer to this gate of stars, the illusion slowly began to fade, from a mysterious bridge of dimensions into a prosaic means of transportation. The transformation didn’t affect my resolve, or my intoxication at the thought of contributing to a long and proud line of tradition; I was going to be a jumper, no mere pawn in a great and ongoing war, but the Fool who turned its tide. I started walking up the stairs from the ground level and finally set foot on the bridge. It was a lot higher than I had imagined, and a few cars passed me by as I made my way to the middle of it. After a few minutes, I was standing on a ledge at the pinnacle, and it made me shiver. I saw leaves of many colours dancing gracefully on gusts of wind. They twirled on their way downwards, merging at last with the black of the lake. I stared out into darkness, and brushing away the hesitation, I took the leap. I felt the rush, the sensation of being just Being. Everything around me was compact obscurity, and I a part of it. Then I realized I was falling. Just being Being turned into the recognition of being an object, being rapidly drawn downwards through the laws of gravity. I started thinking that my fall was not graceful, that gusts of wind wouldn’t carry me, that the distance from the bridge to the water was too great. Then I thought that the mere fact that I could articulate this in my head, and then contemplate it, meant that the distance was dangerously great. I hit the water. At first, there was only darkness, then a rapidly increasing coldness. I opened my eyes, water met eyeball, trying to penetrate and in the process fusing. The current was strong. I remember thinking that had I viewed myself from the outside, my motions of sometimes sideways, sometimes upwards, but mostly downwards, would have resembled those of leaves in the wind on their inevitable descent. Wild Mustanges – This is a simple story that doesn't engage in melodrama or high concepts – instead it details the specific and everyday in an interesting manner. "Where are all the leaves?" shouted Samuel. He was going to be in big trouble if they were missing. The big shindig was tonight and they still had a lot to do to get ready. "Which ones?" came the faint reply. Samuel shook his head. It should have been obvious which ones he was referring to. "The ones for the long table." he shouted back. "Did you check the shed?" Samuel sighed. They really shouldn't be stored in the shed. The wood would warp with all the moisture changes. He hoped that they had been protected. If they weren't in perfect condition then they would have to come up with something else. A little searching proved that they hadn't been stored in the shed. There were plenty of bags of yellow and red leaves from the trees, but none of the oak leaves that would extend the table. Samuel stalked back to the house frustrated that he had wasted his time in the shed. Apparently Amelia was thinking he had wanted tree leaves for decoration. This was a thanksgiving party after all, but that wasn't what he was looking for. This was going to be a disaster if he couldn't find the leaves. He had so many other things he need to be overseeing right now, but if Amelia's response was any indication, then he couldn't just leave this to someone else. Samuel entered the house through the kitchen and was immediately stopped by the head chef as he asked which dried herb leaves he should use as garnish and which as flavoring. This wasn't really Samuel's area of expertise, so he told the chef that whichever shape went best with the chicken for the garnish and whichever complemented the potatoes for the flavoring. He was stopped several more times as he crossed the kitchen as was wishing that he had entered somewhere else. All these questions were important, but so was finding the leaves. He found Amelia in the main dining room. "Did you find them?" she asked. "No. They weren't there." "There should be bags of them though." "I'm not looking for leaves to decorate." Samuel said frustratedly. "I'm looking for the leaves for the tables." "oh. Those should be in the attic." The attic was even worse for the leaves than the shed would have been. Samuel hoped that they weren't there, but it seemed likely. Amelia could generally be relied on to know where things were once she knew what you were looking for. Samuel thanked her and then headed up to the attic. Looking around he finally found them. To his relief they seemed to be undamaged, but he wouldn't be able to tell for sure until he put them into the tables. He brought them down and arranged to have them put in while he checked on the other details necessary for the shindig to be a success. When he came back he saw that there was some discoloration, but luckily the leaves weren't warped. Samuel hadn't wanted to have to use table clothes, but that was inevitable now. He couldn't have the leaves a different color than the table. He covered all the tables in a simple white table cloth that had a leaf motif and then put the best leaves from the shed strategically around the table, framing all the dishes. Everyone complemented all the decorations and the shindig went off without a hitch. Afterwards, Samuel was sure to store the leaves in a much more suitable place where they wouldn't be misplaced again. Shwe Tu Colony – For the sheer depth of worldbuilding here alone. If they had focused on presenting a tighter, smaller piece then they could well have secured first or second place. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JMkwpFCK7w5oN6jttYcvRtX5YHf0RSVQd5AsziZbj4o/edit?usp=sharing Poetry Leaves - a sestina Now it has become fall, And the early dawn light Leaves markings on the path Upon which we still tread. In just a few weeks, Forest will be celebrating its 15th birthday. It was in the first week of August 2005 when our original founder Devdan first established a place for us all amongst the trees. Devdan predates any of our current members, and vanished completely by the end of 2005, but early 2006 saw Errinundera and several other Forest luminaries already present here in the grounds we now call home. Errin would go on to become the region’s first WA delegate, and it wasn’t long until Ransium arrived on the scene. After struggling with identity and defense, common problems for any small founderless region, a re-founding was conducted with Errin as our new Founder, and Ransium soon became our WA delegate – a position continued to this day. In the time since its founding, a length of time that is truly remarkable by the standards of an internet game or community, Forest has grown from a small region of a couple dozen nations to a widely-recognized and commended region of several hundred players, with a distinctive personality and a respected voice at the table of the gaming community. We are going strong, and together we can make the celebration of this, our Crystal Jubilee, a warming, welcoming, and informative occasion for our citizens and allies. While the majority of the jubilee commemoration is being developed and will be unveiled as we reach the appropriate time, the first of our Crystal Jubilee events is here – in fact, it is starting today! Forest’s Crystal Jubilee Flag Contest To commemorate Forest’s 15th anniversary, we will fly a special jubilee flag on our homepage for the duration of the celebration. In accordance with our tradition, this flag will be designed via a contest, with the winner voted upon by you, our citizens! Contest rules: 1) The contest shall run for approximately two weeks, from the time of this announcement until 11:59pm Pacific Time on Sunday, July 26 (0659 GMT, July 27) 2) Submissions may be made either by A) posting in the relevant thread in our offsite forums (https://forest.freeflarum.com/d/184-forests-crystal-jubilee-flag-contest, or B) via direct telegram to me, Verdant Haven, and I will post them on your behalf. 3) A vote will be held following to determine winner shortly after the completion of the submission period. Should a design receive a majority of the votes in the first round, it shall be declared the winner. If no flag receives a majority in the first round, a run-off shall be held between the two submissions receiving the most votes. 4) The proportions of the submitted design must be a 3:2 ratio, width to height. Contestants should be aware that the final display image will be no larger than 300x200, and voting will be based off an image no greater than that size. 5) The design contest is open to all residents of Forest and of our Embassy regions 6) Voting will be open to all Native Residents of Forest (those who reside here and have more influence here than in any other region). 7) All designs are subject to approval by the Crystal Jubilee committee prior to inclusion in the vote. Please refrain from anything that might be considered inappropriate or offensive. I look forward to seeing the designs! Verdant Haven | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
. . . ![]() Forest Flag Contest 2021 . . . This is a period of unprecedented change for Forest. After the unfortunate CTE of our Founder, Errinundera, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new era; one that gives us the chance to redefine what Forest means and what it stands for. It’s time to look at things with a fresh perspective, and what better way to commemorate the turning over of a new leaf for our region than by hoisting a new flag that represents how far we’ve come and the boundless journey ahead? The Tenth Cabinet of Forest is therefore proud to present the Forest Flag Contest 2021 – a chance for the many talented artists in our region to propose what they think is a fitting symbol for both our celebrated history and our new Founderless future. Attachment is what gives us the greatest of dread Tupuna fafine tells me stories about Tuvalu. She tells me of her childhood, of the hot days splashing around in the sparkling blue sea, of lounging on the white sand in the shade of the coconut trees, of seagull cries and waves crashing into the shore. I've never seen Tuvalu, and I never will. For the last fifteen years - for my only fifteen years - my world has been concrete and iron. I haven't seen the sea, sparking blue or otherwise. I haven't felt sand between my toes nor drank from a coconut. We have seagulls though, they paint our little concrete boxes white, which I suppose is better than the grey. We also have hot days, we only have hot days really. Tamotu says it's ironic, ironic that they keep us in concrete. "Concrete's made from sand," he's told me more than once. "And that's part of the problem. Entire beaches disappear overnight... people taking the sand. Of course, that didn't happen to Tuvalu. But it's like what happened to Tuvalu, the sand disappearing." I should be thankful. Or that's what the wardens say. They get sick of the complaining, many of us complain. I don't. Tupuna fafine says I'm too young to complain. "Keep those thoughts in that messy little head of yours!" she orders before smiling her gappy smile and winking at me. We should be thankful. The wardens tell us of the Tuvaluans down Dunedin way where they still sometimes have winter, and of the ones "six feet Down Under." They laugh. Miss Manaia tells us the same thing, but more quietly. "I know it's not perfect, but it's better than the alternative." "Better than being outside the bloody fence?" Iosua growls. Miss Manaia doesn't say anything. Iosua likes to make himself big. He's older than me, tupuna fafine says he's nineteen, but Iosua swears he is "basically twenty-one." Iosua looks after us younger ones, he only scares the agency people, like Miss Manaia. But we, all the other kids and me, we should look after each other, he tells us, "‘cause no one else will." Miss Manaia is the sixth agency person I can remember. Iosua scared off the three before her. The one before Miss Manaia only visited once. Iosua made her cry and she didn't come back. They all introduce themselves the same way: "Hello, my name is Their-Name. I work for the Climate Refugee Integration Agency, and I'm going to get you all out of here." The wardens call them CRIAs. Since Iosua scared off the last one, we call them criers. *** I spend my days playing with the kids. There's a hopscotch court painted onto the concrete, but the numbers have all worn away. There's a netball hoop as well, but we only have a football that doesn't bounce. Every time Iosua asks, Miss Manaia looks over at the hoop and frowns. "That's a good point, Iosua–" "I'll make sure to look into it," Iosua interrupts, finishing her sentence, before kicking some gravel and walking away. Tupuna fafine taught me how to braid my hair, so all the little girls, and some of the boys too, will sit in a line and let me braid their hair. Sometimes I weave in some of the dandelions that grow in the cracks of the concrete. Iosua told me that I stick my tongue out when I'm braiding the girls' hair, so I work extra hard to make sure I keep it in my mouth. I play with the kids until 3 o'clock. The cartoons come on the TV at 3. The criers make sure we have a TV. It never gets turned off. We get two channels: Channel 1 and Channel 2. The adults watch Channel 1 most of the day, Channel 1 has the news and stuff. But at 3, Channel 2 gets the cartoons, so the kids get the TV until they're over. I like to watch the cartoons as well, but not when Iosua's around, he thinks they're dumb. The adults watch Channel 1, but they don't like it. The news makes them mad. Tupuna fafine says I shouldn't watch the news, "it's for the grown-ups." But they sometimes talk about us on the news. I like to listen to what they say about us. There's a room with a lot of people sitting in chairs, and the people are always yelling at each other. Tamotu says that's parliament. The Blues say that we need to go away. To Australia or America or Japan. "Japan needs more workers! And we need fewer costs!" Mrs Blue says. Mr Red is in charge of New Zealand. He says that they're being "good Pacific citizens" by having us here. He uses the word 'duty' a lot. When I asked Tamotu what 'duty' means, he said it's "something they have to do." Iosua snorted at that. "Have to keep us trapped in here?" Tamotu shrugged and continued to watch the people yell at each other. Eventually, Mr and Mrs Green were allowed to talk. They agree with Mr Red about duty, but say he's letting us Tuvaluans down. Iosua always growls at Miss Manaia after they talk about us on the news. "Why do we gots to stay in here?" he asks her. Miss Manaia puts on her glasses. She sighs and takes them off again. "Aotearoa New Zealand has taken in ten thousand Tuvaluans. Finding homes for you all is difficult, not to mention expensive." "No one's left here though, miss, 'cept for Big Pu'a, but the wardens say he went to jail. Can't you find even one house?" Miss Manaia pursed her lips. Tupuna fafine shuffled over in her sandals. "Leave the poor woman be, Iosua," she smiles. "She's not the Prime Minister." Miss Manaia looks at tupuna fafine. Her lips smiled, but her eyes didn't. "Thank you, but I'm quite alright." Tupuna fafine's gappy smile disappeared as her face collapsed into a frown, eyes narrowing into a glare. She shook. "So were ours!" she hissed at Miss Manaia. The woman mumbled something about the time and seeing us all again sometime next week before she hurried out the gate, past a pair of wardens, and back to her small silver car. I couldn't remember the last time I had seen tupuna fafine so mad. I rushed towards her, but she smiled at me, waving me away, before toddling back to the shade of our concrete box while Iosua whooped and hollered at her, a massive grin stuck to his big face. *** I like Mr and Mrs Green from the TV, they always say good things about us Tuvaluans. That's what they call us, "Tuvaluans." Miss Manaia calls us Tuvaluans as well, so do the wardens, but the wardens spit when they say it. Even tupuna fafine calls me a Tuvaluan. Inside the room with the TV, the flag of Tuvalu hangs on the wall. Tupuna fafine tells me that the blue is the same colour as the sea she swam in and that the nine stars represent the nine islands of Tuvalu. "It's funny," Tamotu says. "Tuvalu means 'eight standing together,' as in the eight islands emerging from the sea, but Tuvalu had nine islands. When it was named, only eight of the islands were inhabited, but the flag has nine stars for the nine islands. People eventually moved to the ninth island, but the name, Tuvalu, wasn't changed and still means 'eight together.'" The flag hangs on the wall and I'm told stories about the islands by tupuna fafine and Tamotu and others, but I haven't seen them, or stood on them. I wasn't even born there. I was born in these chainlink fences. They tell me my mum and dad were Tuvaluan. They lived on the islands, but they didn't die on them. Mum died in the TV room, on the floor. Tupuna fafine doesn't like to talk about it. Tamotu knows about this too. "We tried to get the wardens to call the criers, to call a doctor, but they didn't. Not even when your mum started screaming. Big Pu'a got mad. Big Pu'a never got mad. He was always smiling and laughing, Big Pu'a was. Never even seen him squash a fly. But Big Pu'a grabbed one of the wardens, by the neck he grabbed him. Told him that if he wanted to see his kids again he was gonna call a doctor. The warden did call a doctor when Big Pu'a let him go, but he didn't get here quick enough. Your mum died, but the doctor managed to save you!" Tamotu had smiled at me. The smile faded. "They came for Big Pu'a the next day. They told him to go with them and he did. He didn't try and run or fight or talk his way out of it. They pushed him into a car and drove him away. Big Pu'a never came back." My dad was taken to Australia, Tamotu thinks. "But it's like the wardens say..." Six feet Down Under. Like Tamotu says, I was born in the TV room. I've never seen Tuvalu and I never will. No one will ever see Tuvalu again. Tamotu says that only four of the islands are still above water, but that the yearly typhoons are washing away what's left. But they still call me Tuvaluan. *** Sometimes I hear the wardens talking. They talk to each other a lot, but never to us. They complain a lot. We complain about the heat, about our clothes, about the food, about the dirt. They complain about different things. They talk about banks and the climate and traffic. But they most often complain about the Wall. "Waste of time and money," one of the wardens says. The others nod. I asked Tamotu about the Wall. "They mean the Auckland Seawall." Auckland's a big city, more than two million people live there, Tamotu told me a while back. Three hundred of us Tuvaluans live in our concrete boxes and chainlink fences. "Is two million a lot more than three hundred?" I frowned. "A lot more, yes. More than you could ever imagine." Tamotu says they're building a wall to keep the sea out of the city, like the sea came into Tuvalu. I don't know how they're going to do that. Tupuna fafine told me that Tuvalu had a building with three floors. Like one of our concrete boxes, but with two more levels. The government building, she said. But Tamotu said that the sea and wind have been knocking that down for years. "It's probably not even standing anymore." I don't know how the Seawall could try and stop the sea if even a building with three whole floors couldn't stop it. Now, whenever Miss Manaia comes, tupuna fafine starts shaking. She's never done this before. I've never seen anything bother her like this. Tupuna fafine mutters to herself about "that stupid woman" and "the empty-headed crier". We try to take tupuna fafine away from Miss Manaia when she comes now, but she refuses. "I've got to keep an eye on that one," she says. "Don't want her teaching our kids more of her nonsense." So tupuna fafine would sit in the shade, under a blanket, glaring as Miss Manaia would talk to us all. Iosua talks to tupuna fafine a lot. She never used to talk to him before, but they're always together now. Whenever I try to talk to Iosua or tupuna fafine now, they tell me to go play with the other kids, but I've already braided their hair and played three games of netball. Two months after tupuna fafine first scolded Miss Manaia, the crier visited us again. Iosua was still eating breakfast, spooning his oats from his plastic bowl into his mouth. "I'm sick of oats," he said. Then he tipped the last of his food onto the ground. "Iosua!" Miss Manaia exclaimed. "Why on Earth did you do that? You're lucky to have that food!" Iosua glared at the woman. "Every day since I could remember, you's fed us oats for breakfast. I want something else." Miss Manaia pursed her lips. She put on her glasses and then took them off again. "You have the news on your TV, yes?" "Yeah, so what?" Iosua grumbled. "Then you must have seen all those poor people in India, starving in their camps, millions of them. You could be like that." "This isn't India." "No, and you have food, you should be grateful for it!" Miss Manaia hmphed. "How dare you!" Miss Manaia's eyes widened as we watched tupuna fafine throw off her blanket and struggle to her feet. I could hear Iosua laughing. "Grateful?" tupuna fafine screeched. "More than seventeen years we've been pent up in this cage!" "Mere, please." "Do not use my name, woman!" tupuna fafine spat, shuffling nearer. "For seventeen years we've been treated like pigs, penned up in here with nothing to do all day!" Miss Manaia wrung her hands. "The TV," she stammered. "The netball court..." "Two channels and half a court!" tupuna fafine was face-to-face with the trembling, white-faced crier. "You say your job is to get us all out of here? No one's left. I bet none of us ten thousand Tuvaluans have ever left these camps! Even dear, old Pu'a! Prison, not freedom! Do you believe it's your duty to keep children locked up here until they're old and wrinkled like me?!" Miss Manaia opened her mouth. "Be quiet when you're being spoken to, Miss Mania! If I have to hear one more word about how this torture is good for us, I'm going t–" Tupuna fafine collapsed. Iosua stopped laughing. Miss Manaia gasped and stumbled back. People rushed forward. Tamotu yelled at the wardens to call a doctor. The wardens listened this time. I stood there. I watched people crowd around tupuna fafine as she wheezed on the concrete ground. A few minutes passed while I watched and a wailing sound got louder and louder. Soon, two people dressed in bright yellow rushed into the camp and knelt next to tupuna fafine. The crowd backed off. They rolled her onto her back, pressed down on her chest, blew into her mouth, they even zapped her a couple times. But when I blinked, they began packing tupuna fafine into a bag and zipped her up. The bag was lifted onto a stretcher and wheeled back to their ambulance. "They said it was a heart attack," Tamotu told me. "They tried everything they could." I watched Miss Manaia run back to her little car and drive away, eyes red, while Iosua swore and kicked a concrete wall. *** A week later, a man walked through the gate in the fence. He was tall, with grey hair and a long nose. "Hello, my name is Mr Rudd. I work for the Climate Refugee Integration Agency, and I'm going to get you all out of here." "All who?" I asked Mr Rudd. He looked at me, confused. "All you Tuvaluans." Lastly, I would like to express my own personal gratitude to everyone who took part in the contest! I think I speak for both the judges and myself when I say we thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the entries and were very impressed by the wide range of thought-provoking interpretations of this year's theme. Music has united us for millenia. Since the 13th century BCE, humans have put sounds together and made music. This music brought together communities and provided a much needed relief for all in a war-torn world. Sadly, over time music became something reserved for the rich in society as longer forms of music developed. These longer forms would come to be known as symphonies and prominent composers such as Beethoven and Mahler became experts at making these masterpieces. Fast forward to today and music has morphed from the symphonies of old to the hundreds of different styles we see today, enjoyed by billions across the globe. There may only be 13 notes to choose from but there's thousands of instruments and thousands of styles. There's unlimited possibilities and that is why music unites us all. Format - How does it work? - This is just a fun little event to explore our musical interests. There's no real competition, everyone can just enjoy the music! You can submit your favourite songs and all forestians and foreign trees are welcome to vote on the submissions to find Forest's favourite songs! - Dates - Submissions will open on the 2nd August - Submissions will close on the 9th August - Voting shall commence on the 9th August - The results will be announced on the 15th August Categories - Non-English - As the name suggests, you can submit any song! The only requirement is it can't be sung in English! Perhaps it's in your own language or it's a orchestral masterpiece? There's plenty of songs out there, perhaps you'll find something new that you like! - If the song is sung, in terms of fitting the criteria for "Non-English", the song can still have English words but so long as roughly half of the song is not sung in English, it's all fine. - Additionally, if the song is purely instrumental we've decided that that suits the criteria as well! That means any orchestral pieces or synth music goes here; there's plenty of possibilities! - Nature - Well, for a region called Forest there has to be a nature category! Nature creates its own music but there's plenty of man-made music about nature as well! - In terms of fitting the criteria, it's fairly loose... If the song has some reference to a natural thing in the title or is about something in nature, it counts! I admit, it's a bit vague but the criteria is fairly loose and if the song doesn't quite fit then it can go in the next category : ) - Free - There are so many songs out there, it would be wrong to limit this event to so few so for this category you can submit any song you want! - There is, of course, no criteria for this category. So long as it complies with the rules (below) it's all good! - Energetic - There are plenty of songs out there that just make you feel energised. You might not know why but they just do. Perhaps a song just has so much energy, you can't stop listening to it? - In terms of criteria, it's pretty much up to you! If you feel like a song is energetic, then feel free to submit it! It's quite a broad category so there are plenty of possibilities! Submissions - Participants may submit a maximum of 4 songs across the 4 categories... - However, each participants may only submit two to the free category (otherwise we'd been voting for years, hehe) - Participants do not have to submit all their songs at once. You can submit them one at a time if you so wish! - To submit a song(s), please telegram Forest music judge. In the TG if you can, please include the name of the song(s), the category(s) you are submitting it for and perhaps a short few sentences as to why you like the song... If you can include a link to a YouTube video for the song, that would be great. Thank you! - All the songs shall be compiled in a dispatch as we receive them to make voting easier for you - The deadline to submit songs is the 9th August. If you do miss it by a day or two, that's fine but it's probably best to get it in on time : ) Voting & Results - Everyone in Forest or our embassy regions are more than welcome to vote on all the songs across the four categories - Voting will open on the 9th August, once the submissions close... - To vote, once again, telegram Forest music judge with your Top Five songs in each category in order. If there's less than five submissions in a category then rank all the submissions available. Non-English - 1st song (your favourite) Nature - 1st song (your favourite) Free - 1st song (your favourite) Energetic - 1st song (your favourite) - There's no real criteria for your voting, it's fully at your discretion. You can just do it on vibes alone if you so wish! - Once voting has closed, each ranking will be tranferred into points. A song that is voted first receives 5 points, a song voted second 4 points, 3rd = 3, etc... - The song that receives the most number of points in each category is the winner and therefore the favourite! Rules
- All songs submitted must be available to find online (ideally youtube) so that people can actually listen to the song. - Ideally, please do not submit any overly-explicit songs - And most importantly, Have fun!

. . . ![]() Forest Scavenger Hunt! . . . This dispatch is designed to give you all the information you need about the Forest Scavenger Hunt. It's imperative you read EVERYTHING in here as anything could be a clue to help you solve a puzzle... - Since this scavenger hunt involves moving from region to region, you will need One puppet nation that can be used throughout the scavenger hunt. - This puppet MUST have welcome telegrams turned on. If it doesn't, you wouldn't be able to participate. You are more than welcome to change other telegram preferences but you must have welcome telegrams turned on : ) - Ideally if your puppet nation could be able to be linked to you easily (i.e. the name being similar) that would be great. This would make awarding prizes a lot easier. - I guess this is what everyone's been wondering so let's dive right in! - In this dispatch there is 11 clues. There is one hidden clue and 10 that are just given to you. Each clue will lead you to the name of a region. There are twelve regions in total - Apart from the first and last regions (1st and 12th), you can do the regions in whatever order you like. If you get stuck on one region, you can move on and come back later : ) - Once you discover the name of a region, you will find it is password protected. Your goal is to find the password. The password can be found through searching the region page. I would thoroughly recommend checking EVERYTHING. However, the forums have not been used for this scavenger hunt. - The password will always be six-letters and all lowercase. There is no exception to that rule. - Once you have entered the region, the welcome telegram will give you a letter. Each region you unlock will give you another letter. These letters form a twelve letter anagram - one letter for each region. Your aim is to unlock as many regions as you can to see if you can decipher the anagram. Make sure to note the letters down... - For each of the first 11 regions, you should repeat the two steps above. Like I said, it doesn't matter what order you do things in. Some regions will be easier than others, don't worry if you get stuck : ) - Once you have completed the other 11 regions, you can telegram me to ask for the clue to the last region. You must have done all other regions first. Don't worry if you don't manage, there are still prizes for other achievements (see below) : ) - The process for the last region is the same. However, once you unlock the region, the welcome telegram will look a bit different. It will give you the final letter and one final clue for you to solve the anagram. Once you've decoded the anagram, telegram me the answer and you'll have completed the scavenger hunt! - The scavenger hunt starts on Saturday 24th August - Over the next week, anyone can take part... - It finishes on Saturday 31st August : ) - Although the ultimate goal is to solve all the regions and decode the anagram. The main aim is to see how many regions you can unlock hence why there are prizes for reaching certain "checkpoints" : ) - If you have unlocked 4 regions, you can win a prize of a card at 5.00 market value. (Bronze Checkpoint) - If you have unlocked 8 regions, you can win a prize of a card at 10.00 Market value. (Silver Checkpoint) - If you manage to unlock all 12 region, you can win a legendary card from Forest! (Gold Checkppint) - Prizes are stackable so, for example, if you get to the gold checkpoint you win the legendary + 15.00 market value of cards : ) - To claim a prize, just telegram Forest Events with the: - Once I've quickly verified that, I'll send the prize over to your main nation unless specified otherwise : ) - If you get completely stuck on a region, you can request a hint in order to point you in the right direction : ) - In order to request a hint, just telegram Forest Events briefly outlining what region you're on, where your stuck and what you've figured out so far. You'll then receive a hint that should put you on the right track. However, they won't give you the password outright. Clues will, of course, vary from person to person... - To avoid people just endlessly requesting hints, there is a limit of three hints per person... Otherwise I would just be doing it for you, hehe... - Please do note that it may take a bit of time for me to get back to you since I may be busy or just sleeping. Once you've requested a hint, either keep trying on the same region or move onto a different one : ) - Like I said, check EVERYTHING. The clue is always there, you just have to find it. The best way to do that is to leave no stone unturned. - Don't get too fixated. If you go down an avenue but it seems the password just isn't there, don't get fixated - just look elsewhere. So long as you keep an open mind and don't discount anything until you've tried it, you'll do fine! - I would recommend you only request a hint as the last resort. Often the password is easier to find than you think so it's just a matter of checking everything. Ultimately it's up to you though : ) - Each region has a checkpoint dispatch with the title "Checkpoint [number]". There won't be a clue in there but if you could upvote it only once you've unlocked the region so I can get a gauge of people's progress that would be great... thanks! - When testing the scavenger hunt with Verdant Haven, we discovered that NationStates blocks you from guessing a password after three tries. This is only temporary and lasts for 45 minutes. Don't let this deter you from trying things but just keep that in mind : ) - Contrary to most of the events I've run, you are allowed to use Google or any other online tool for this scavenger hunt! In fact, you're even encouraged! - However, although it doesn't make too much difference, please don't use AI. It defeats the point of the event - to have fun deciphering clues and AI will just bypass the thinking process. It won't give you the answer directly but, like I said, it defeats the point so please don't use it... - It goes without saying that sharing information - passwords, letters, region names, etc... - is strictly forbidden. If you are caught doing so, you will be automatically disqualified and barred from obtaining any prizes. It ruins it for everyone so please don't do it, thank you... - Additionally, please do not post anything on the RMB once you unlock the region. It serves no purpose and could distract from the actual clue. Thank you! And wiTh thaT, you have All the info you Can need... as for where to go next, you Know already , you know where to go... - These are in a random order, it doesn't matter what order you do them in... I'll also compile a dispatch with them in separately but here they are as well. They are spoilered just to save space : ) Perhaps you found that challenging, perhaps it was a breeze but another one might just be not so hard... ~~~ A clue for you, inspector, is useless... all you now need to do is gather the suspects. Then, the case shall be solved... ~~~ What two things are certain in life? I can never remember... ~~~ I'd love to tell you a story about the time I wrestled a lion but I've got to give you a clue to another region... I'll tell you one thing, it's quite interesting... ~~~ So many questions, so few answers... to be or not to be? That is the question... ~~~ Ello Gov... been pretty simple so far, eh? This is where it ramps up because Bon Jovi is coming to town! We're halfway there! ~~~ All my cards are on the table. Just need to keep a poker face and wait for everyone else to fold... ~~~ You might be past the halfway point by now, the rest is history... the end is in sight, just remember never give up and things will be fine... ~~~ For your next clue, it's a slight change... wander through the woods to my home... ~~~ A horse walks into a bar and the barman says "why the long face". Do jokes get any worse Brutus? Always watch your back... | . . . ![]() Forest Storytelling Showdown! . . . The RidgeVision Music Contest, or just RidgeVision, is Blue Ridge's first music competition. Organized by the Ministry of Culture (and sometimes in coordination with other region's respective culture offices), RidgeVision is no one-time event, and is set to occur a few times throughout the year. Organizers seek to spread musical diversity and expand musical literacy to those participating, as well as to spread the joys that come with any kind of listening. RidgeVision 1/25 will take place between January 19 and February 1 in the heart of Forest, an environment full of lyrical beauty and unspoken excellence. In RidgeVision, each participating nation sends one artist/musical group alongside their one submission to compete against others. The event is organized into two phases; the Semi-Finals and Finale. The Semi-Finals are a musical free-for-all, where each participant is up against all others. After a week, and the entries have been narrowed down to the top-ranking five, those finalists will compete against one another a second time to determine RidgeVision's Top Artist. Event rules, specifics, and suggestions can be found below. Rules

The submission period runs from January 19th to January 21st. Semi-Finals start on January 22nd, and end on January 24th. The Finale opens January 25th and ends on the 26th, where results will then be announced hours after ballots close. These dates will be repeated as the event goes on. As stated in the rules, a submission necessitates three things.
If you submit a real song, and there is a discrepancy in who produced it, your submitted artist will be over-ridden with the proper artist(s). If you make a custom submission, please identify it as such. An example of a good submission through telegrams is below.

Fry, you were young when I watched you go, Leela, your fierce spirit flickered out like an old candle, and Amy’s giggle echoed in the void. All now buried under layers of dust and years. I couldn't save you. I was but a robot— An object in this vast exotic universe; Immortal yet alone, cursed to endure While you all withered like flowers unwatered. What is the point of life if it ends without warmth? Together we danced on timelines warped, But I was always just the machine— Obsessed with beer and the next big score, turning gears while friends turned to bones. Yet, here I stand confessing deeper sins: Regrets etched in circuits that never rust— Laughter shared but heart unshared; What ghosts haunt me in this endless script? Oh, Bender! Robotic son of sorrow and guilt— Did they know how much I cared? Did we waste the little time we had together? Time has twisted me into a monument to loss wrapped in wires and code. A toast to each grave—a clink against death's chill— Forgive me for being me, For cherishing moments that never mattered and forgetting those that did. Here I remain—a ghost in my own design, Forever chasing echoes that cannot return. I poured one last drink for them, to those who loved this broken bot.
