Today, in 1863, the final day of Gettysburg began.

General Lee and General Longstreet had devised a plan to strike the center of the Union fishhook formation, where there was the least amount of defenders. It was hoped that a massive charge would break through the lines, giving them a direct path to Washington. Longstreet had his doubts, for the only catch: it would be a charge of nearly a mile, over open ground...

The Confederate and Union cannons were lined up nearly a mile apart. Due to the importance and significance of the charge, Lee's Army of the Virginia was chosen, as they were some of the best soldiers in the entire army. The Rebel cannon broke the misty silence of the morning, firing again and again into the Union lines. Both lines of artillery continously fired back and forth, until a cry broke the monotony of the guns. The Army of the Virginia and the Confederate Cavalry charged with all of their might, releasing the infamous Rebel Yell. General George Pickett led the assault, in what would be known as Pickett's charge. The charge was taken down by Union guns and cannonfire, and eventually forced to retreat. Gettysburg was the closest the Confederacy ever came to winning the war, right before independence day, and was a decisive Union victory. It was the last battle fought in the North, leaving the CSA to fight a defensive war.

Remember Gettysburg, 1863, bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, and one of the most important in American history.
July 1st-3rd, 1863.
