Within the eyes of a Heron

I know not which flies on radiant wings
Nor that which swims lower than the sun

But I know that the heron sees us
As he takes to the northern night sky
Us, a sea of light and columns beneath
Flickers of deep gold, waning trapped flame and orange coals
Flickers of light, within columns of light, within rows of light, within sectors of light
All woven within one city
Each dreadfully indistinct.

Millions of cars, houses, street lights, businesses and stoplights
All glow as one
Invisibility through ubiquity.
Interwoven, and within.

Within. I know not which you ponder, on lonesome summer evenings.
Nor do I know what the starling ponders, as her flock takes to the sky.

But I know the eternal longing to be Within.
Interwoven.

A light within lights interwoven.
Within Lights Interwoven
A sea of lights within a sea of lights, interwoven.
Grotesquely invisible, gloriously within.

Can the heron’s eye see through the false aureate swarm?
A perpetual iris, gazing upon trees, lakes, and rich sweet soil?
Or is the heron too a victim of the resplendent sea?

I do not know. But I know that within the eyes of the heron, I do not register.
