The People's Republic of Sallybrook is a large, socially progressive nation, renowned for its state-planned economy, irreverence towards religion, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate, democratic population of 134 million Sallybrookians love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The enormous, socially-minded, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Education, and Administration. The average income tax rate is 73.0%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The basket case Sallybrookian economy, worth 832 billion schtums a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is quite specialized, is led by the Trout Farming industry, with significant contributions from Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Soda Sales, and Retail. Average income is 6,211 schtums, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

The Party has more splits than a yo-yo dieter's trousers, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, gambling is outlawed, and kids are arrested at gunpoint for playing with toy rifles. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Sallybrook's national animal is the Pied Wagtail, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Sallybrook is ranked 311,796^th in the world and 542^nd in The Communist Bloc for Most Extensive Public Healthcare, scoring 404.2 on the Theresa-Nightingale Rating.
