I enter the TWP RMB, I see this, I leave.

And nothing of value was lost.

Happy St Gertrude's Day, TWP!

She avoided an arranged marriage by setting up a religious house, which she filled with nuns and cats. She became known for ridding households of mice and rats as a result, and thereby reducing disease.

I now imagine "Over, Under, Folder, Scruncher" to the tune of the Daft Punk song.

No roleplay on the RMB thank you. We have dedicated areas on our off-site forum and Discord server for that.

A read of our New Player’s Guide is highly recommended.

BBD’s Astronomy Spot

The Great American Total Solar Eclipse
On April 8 a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from a large part of the continental United States as well as parts of Mexico and Canada.

The partial eclipse starts at 15:42 and ends at 20:52. Totality begins at 16:38 and finishes at 19:55 with 18:55 being the time of greatest eclipse. All times are in UTC, check the conversion to your local time.

The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality is approximately 60 miles wide - along the centre of the path totality will last for about four minutes. The further away from the centre line the shorter amount of totality.

So, if you live anywhere near the path of totality I would encourage you to travel and try and get to see this event. If you live on the path then check the likely weather you will get and see if by moving up or down the path you can improve your chances of good weather.

To observe the eclipse all you need is a pair of eclipse glasses, cardboard sunglasses with a Mylar film covering the eyes. This will protect your eyesight during the partial phase.

DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITHOUT APPROPRIATE PROTECTION EITHER WITH THE NAKED EYE OR WITH OPTICAL EQUIPMENT. YOU HAVE ONLY ONE PAIR OF EYES - DON’T DAMAGE THEM.

Once totality starts you can dispense with the glasses and see, hopefully, the Sun’s chromosphere and definitely see the solar corona, the Sun’s atmosphere. During the twilight of totality both Venus and Jupiter will be visible and using binoculars you may be able to locate Comet Pons-Brooks which will be close to perihelion and about magnitude 4 - 4.5. Remember to put the binoculars down before the eclipse ends.

I think our own Darkesia got to see the last American eclipse in 2017 and for this one both Yy4u and Westwind have said they live on the path of totality. So, if you do decide to go and see it (and I would encourage anyone who can to do so) it’s party time at their places afterwards.

Okay, that last part’s not true.

There was going to be more in this spot but I think I’ve taken up enough RMB space.

I also got to see the last one and will be seeing this one too!! My family went down to southern Illinois to see totality as well (very cool) and this time we're going to southern Indiana!

Cool is an understatement. I’ve got one total solar eclipse under my belt - 1999. Knowing the British weather was likely to be rubbish, even in August, I travelled to Iran to see it. Clear blue skies all through the eclipse, while Britain was clouded out (mostly).

I live in Britain. I can't handle this weather. Sky is always grey and it's raining and just depressing weather overall. Sunny days aren't long. I also live in the 2nd rainiest city in the UK, Manchester

Yes the weather this winter has been particularly wet and grey and as someone whose main interest is observing the Sun it’s particularly irksome.

Manchester? I think it was Douglas Adams who said that Manchester exists throughout the multiverse in a myriad of different forms and inhabitants. One thing in common between them - it’s always raining. :)

(By the way I live in Wales. The Bible says that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. That’s a good summer for us.)

I live in the four minute area this year, I think it was more of a 2-3 minute thing last time.

I remember the early morning eclipse 1961 in coastal Southern Kent ( I was 7) and the 1999 when I was in Cornwall, on a country hill, clouds cleared suddenly and we were treated to the grey line and the near blackness rapidly approaching in the distance, it was incredibly dramatic as if a giant hand had swept across the sky.

There were dogs in our group some of whom laid down as if to sleep, birds fell silent and young children were either amazed or whimpering! I was boggled to silence ( if you know me you would say that's impossible!) by a weird primeval fear as if I had seen fire for the first time.

Nature put us in our place, even the knowledge of what causes an eclipse did not alter that. So go and see it if you can, not to be missed.

They really need to stop creeping around.
