Lady Zaharra, concerned for the meese, immediately dispatches an entire barrel's worth of 50 year old Greendew whiskey to remedy the situation.

I've decided to go with the hippie around-Lazarus trip. See what I did there?
If it only lasts for a short while then the hippies can return to Mzeusia.

Anyway I'll probably write a post on the weekend. It'll probably be one or two posts for each nation but I'll work out a lot of the details as I go.

On a completely unrelated note, are there any generally agreed-upon restrictions on submarine warfare? Just thought I'd slip in that question.

Today is the 500th anniversary of the establishment of the Imperial College of Veterinary Surgeons, so named when Lady Zaharra was still still technically the Empress of the Land of the Seven Suns.

I assume that civilian vessels, hospital ships or ships that have surrendered may not be attacked under Lazarene international law. But then that's me talking, as the representative of a civilised, democratic country without a notably large submarine fleet...

Just another random question, but beside contacting the vessel or surfacing to look at them, is there a way to distinguish a military vessel against a wholly noncombative one?

Oh no, no, it's we who are undeserving of you, my amicable moose shaped friend.

In other news, writing "amicable moose shaped", may have just cured my writer's block.

To further the thinking on RP, it might be productive to assume a standard body of international law. We can develop this organically in the normal RP way, as and when people need (I smell an opportunity ensuing from whatever happens next). Otherwise, it makes it seem like there are a bunch of people personally controlling states (states warping in and out of existence?!) with only part-time interest, and little inclination to pass comprehensive, dull legislation on VLCC shipping emissions. We cannot have that! :P

Directly regarding submarines, I do not think there are any specific restrictions on their use. Unrestricted submarine warfare was objectionable under international law for complex reasons that affect all warships, concerning 'prize courts' and 'cruiser rules' and so forth. Not because there is a treaty setting out the behaviour of submarines per se in wartime.

Modern sonar is more than capable of determining the ship class, speed, direction, etc. from the noises ships emit. If you are at periscope depth (why?), your radar mast (and others) can also identify with great accuracy.

Well, for the sake of hypothesis, what if we're total dumbasses and do not know the difference between a civilian ship's noises and class from a state-of-the-art battleship from Leonism?

If it wasn't intentional, it's not violating any kind of treaty, right?

If you are using WWII sonar technology and more modern torpedo tech, then sure. Or if you had a major problem, frying the computer that classifies ships, so you cannot distinguish ships (even then, a sonar operator should easily separate a tanker from a large warship). If it's a joke, it's a good one! Shoot tube 1!
