Initial incursions of jungle warfare forces into Toledo District have revealed dug in and well-armed insurgents who are using civilian infrastructure and populations as ‘human shields’. This negates any large-scale air bombardment and analysis say will require the use of specialist forces. New groups have been formed with Belizean and British troops. These will be supported by Harrier, helicopter and drone patrols.

Sir Henry Smith, Minister for Defence said: “It is clear that as is often the case with asymmetrical warfare that will not be able to deploy conventional forces or air for direct combat given the risk to Belizean life. Although regular forces will be used to keep roads and lines and liberated settlements safe, special jungle forces will be required, with logistical back-up from relief support to liberate Belize mile by mile.

Given the need for highly trained troops working in small squads, we have invited our allies -greater canada- Imperial Eagle who through their training in Trinidad and actions in Panama are well placed to carry out jungle anti-insurgency with a an absolute priority on protecting and minimising disruption and loss of civilian life. We are there to protect the people of Belize, many of whom are indigenous and especially vulnerable to 'Brillante' forces."

The Union Army is preparing to deploy Green Berets and other Special Operations troops to Belize at this time along with possible deployment of a Ranger Battalion due to the nature of jungle warfare. We hope that these forces are of good use in the ongoing anti-insurgent mission and that law and order can be restored in a timely manner.
