The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 933 million Zandosians hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The relatively small, corrupt, liberal, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Defense, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Zandian. The average income tax rate is 19.7%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient Zandosi economy, worth 127 trillion Zandollas a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient, broadly diversified black market in Information Technology, Retail, Soda Sales, and Arms Manufacturing. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. A faint smell of body odour can be detected at several miles' distance from the National Science Park, lifelong celibates are surprised to receive government-issue condoms in the post, hospitals have poor data security but send lots of bodies to be encrypted, and protesters are up in arms over new nuclear power stations. Crime, especially youth-related, is pervasive, perhaps because of the country's complete lack of prisons. Zandos's national animal is the D U C C, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
