The Democratic States of Transamerica is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Myles Durant with an iron fist, and remarkable for its compulsory military service, parental licensing program, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 1.608 billion Transamericans are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Capital 0. The average income tax rate is 88.0%.

The thriving Transamerican economy, worth 164 trillion Peace Dollars a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, quite specialized black market in Arms Manufacturing, Beef-Based Agriculture, Door-to-door Insurance Sales, and Furniture Restoration. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 102,310 Peace Dollars, with the richest citizens earning 5.3 times as much as the poorest.

Citizens who don't recite the Pledge of Transamerica at least three times a day are placed on a terrorist watch-list, punk-rockers and girl-bands are united in their loss of fashion statements, Myles Durant is described as an everyday person with normal tastes and the usual interests, and the nation's diplomatic missives are now delivered via sniper rifle. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Transamerica's national animal is the Bald Eagle, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies.

Transamerica is ranked 279,714th in the world and 1,328th in Europe for Largest Gambling Industry, scoring -12.01 on the Kelly Criterion Productivity Index.
