time to talk about taiwanese politics even though no one asked!
so on the issues of Chinese politics with Taiwan, i'm sort of divided on the issue.
one the one hand, I support the right to self determination, and if the majority of the Taiwanese people support independence, then they should have independence.
on the other, I generally favor the KMT over Minzhudang (DPP), and I support maintaining the status quo. ideally I would support a KMT controlled China under republicanism, but I don't really know if that's gonna happen (probably not)
my father says that the only reason why people support taiwanese independence is because the younger people are brainwashed by DPP education to support it, and that "before the DPP came into power, the majority of people supported the status quo or unification, and after that the majority of people supported independence.". I don't necessary agree with this claim.
there's also the whole stitch with the Taiwanese Solidarity Party (aka one of my least favorite political parties that I know of in the world). there was a whole incident where the head of the party went to a Japanese war crime shrine, there's a whole video about that. So yeah, you can see why that's my least favorite party. My father uses this to claim that the people who support independence are the descendants of Japanese settlers, and the pro-independent advocates are racist towards Mainland China, calling it 'Shina' and stuff like that. I don't necessary agree with him on this, I know that he's right on some things, but that doesn't mean that all Taiwanese independence activists are racist, or all of them are descended from Japanese settlers, or stuff like he claims.
and then the Taiwanese elections in 2024 that happened. the reason why the DPP won was because the opposition split between the KMT and the Taiwan People's Party, and in fact this is what the KMT candidate directly said. the DPP only won like 40% of the vote which means they could've easily been beaten if it was only a two way race. (this is why first past the post voting sucks!1!!11!!!11!!). my dad says that the DPP is corrupt, and he's sort of true, I mean Chen Shui-bian was prosecuted for charges relating to money laundering and was forced to step down. but then again he's also the person who says that the PRC should invade Taiwan and brainwash them if they think they should be independent. he says he previously, though against, would consent to taiwanese independence if the majority agreed, but apparently now they're erasing Chinese culture and history (which if they are then boooooooo but i'm not completely sure if they are) he wants the PRC to invade Taiwan and brainwash them.
He's also opposed to the notion of America protecting Taiwan. In his mind, the PRC-ROC conflict is a purely domestic issue, as its a civil war (since it's technically ongoing), and its not in America's place to invade in the civil war. As such, he opposed American protection of Taiwan. please do note that I do not share the same opinion as him on this issue (or any of the issues mentioning my father) :/
