Cantors Paradise wrote:Do you know the Waterboys song "Beverly Penn"? A great, great piano-rockin' love story song. It blows me away every time I hear it. It's based on a fantasy novel called "Winter's Tale" that I have never gotten around to reading. But someday, I'm gonna have to read it, just to grok the song better.

I know neither the band or the book. Gave the song you mentioned a spin, though, and I really liked it. They remind me of a more current band, but I can't put my finger on it. Vaguely Bruce Springsteen-esque. The horns coming in at the end were a nice touch. The book looks like it could be good, but always hard to tell.

I like when there's some sort of exchange between literature and music. Put me in mind of Joy Division and J.G. Ballard. What a band.

That Rockwell painting is one of the funniest ever. I love the way the chatter reaches all the way back to the relevant person and the confrontation at the end. 🎨

Agreed, his paintings have a great sense of humor. I'm pretty sure it took me a few perusals before I caught that bit about it circling back around. I really love Norman Rockwell. He really fell out of favor for awhile, there, especially among artist types. I'm not sure, but he may be having a bit of a resurgence, if I'm reading the winds correctly. He deserves one.

Being the primary person which that dispatch was directed at, I am not surprised that you would attempt to dismiss it so readily as "drivel."

I really like Rockwell, I've got a book of his stuff. Yeah, the art snobs didn't care much for him, screw them. I like "The Connoisseur" and the one with the girl sitting outside the Principal's office. 'The Problem We All Live With' remains a great work, maybe his best.

It was drivel - "We will not walk in fear, one of another." Edward R. Murrow

Oh yeah, "The Connoisseur" is especially interesting, as he seemingly skillfully recreates a Jackson Pollock or some such painting. That must have been a lot of fun for him. Reminds me of his "Art Critic," though that's a bit fantastical:

And yeah, "The Problem We All Live With" was pretty powerful. It's always interesting in those rare occasions when he gets into subject matters related to social issues like that.

I'm especially partial to his baseball-themed works. They're a good meeting of artist with subject. "Tough Call" is a good one, with some humor:

I also like "The Rookie", we can all identify with being the new kid in class, regardless of our date of birth. You're right though. Rockwell's work definitely deserves a re-evaluation.

Not to distract you from Armageddon or anything, but...

The Waterboys are one third of my holy Trinity of musical artists, the other two being Bob Dylan and Mike Oldfield.

Assuming you listened to the album cut rather than an alternate take or live version, the "horns" at the end were a single sax player. He was amazing. Unfortunately, most of the original band except for Mike Scott, the brains behind the outfit, have left the band, which is now just Scott and whoever he feels like getting to back him up.

I think the combo of the piano and sax is the link to Springsteen that you perceive.

If you figure out who they remind you of, please let me know. I'll definitely want to give them a listen.

OK, you can return now to being blown so high you can kiss your a** good-bye...

English is my first language and I still get confuzzled by it. That reminds me of the CSN song, Teach Your Chidren. The lyric should be...

Teach, your children well,
Teach them to spell,
and use good grammar.
