Because of the abolition of slavery, Confederate nationalists formed the Klu Klux Klan, an ultra-nationalist racist group in targeting newly freed Black Americans. Because of this, Republicans rallied to order Federal troops to protect Black Americans in the south to prevent the KKK from getting to them. Most Republicans wanted to classify the KKK as a crime organization and have them be arrested, that way after Federal forces are to be withdrawn, the Police could take out the group. However, Democrats were not so keen on what Republicans had in mind.
