Witterheim- the largest port in Reborn Empire of Ulm and the only one which can accomodate entirety of Imperial Navy. It's massive docks are home to Ulm's Home Defense Fleet. More than 70% of vessels serving in the Reborn Empire of Ulm's Navy were produced in it's shipyards including Emperor's personal flagship ,,Gram''. It is also the busiest city in the Empire in times of war. Majority of warships assembled here are ready for war. Fleets of Mittenmeyer, Schurz and Raushenberg are the first to depart. Each of them was given important tasks and course of the campaign may rest on their shoulders. Emperor decided to use Mittenmeyer's exceptional skills in employment of lightning-fast tactics to send him ahead and secure Aquilonnia while Schurz and Reushenberg were entrusted with setting up blockades around Zoygarian colonies. Their success is essential for securing supply route and rally point for the main fleet. With the Emperor's blessing they set out towards the enemy territority.

Lush forests of Aquilonnia are teeming with life however this time it is not the wildlife but Ulm's shock troops from local garrison and Aquilon militia that are making their way through them. Their orders are clear: capture the South and turn Aquillonia into Ulm's naval base for the duration of the campaign. They are closing in on the border ready for combat. It is only a matter of time before the battle begins.

Okada, Southern Aquiląnia, Zoygaria

A cool breeze swept across the beaches of Okada, rustling the few trees and showcasing the brilliant purple of the Okadan flag for all to see. The bustling city had temporarily closed its ports in preparation for a massive storm en route. Despite being many miles off, the grey gloom of the clouds rumbled threateningly at the city. The scene was peaceful, for the moment. However, an event was to occur that would soon shatter that ever so fragile peace.

A young man dashed through the corridors of the capitol, stopping for no one. He didn't care who he bumped into or how many looks of disdain he received, he only had one thought in mind: reach the Governor's office. After a few minutes and several less than kind shouts directed his way, the young man reached the massive oak doors of the Gubernatorial office, scarcely knocking before rushing in. Startled, Governor Javek, who had previously been reading at his desk, shot up with surprise. Before he could even open his mouth to speak, the nearly breathless man in front of him sputtered—
"Governor! News from the front! Urgent..." gasp "The north..." gasp "The grey's are coming..."
"Grey's" were the colloquial name for the Ulmians, particularly their armed forces, dubbed mockingly after their grey flag. The Governor's initial shock disappeared entirely from his face, instead replaced with a solemn look of urgency.
"Get me on the phone with Vostok."

Vostok, Khovostov Oblast, Zoygaria

King Arristok Zobieski III, Sovereign Monarch of Zoygaria, Lord of the Imperial Commonwealth, King of Zoygaria, King of Helga, King of Czasza, Grand Duke of Szilazhí, The Lion of the East, was a man. Like any other Zoygarian, he needed food, water, air, and sleep. Like any other Zoygarian, he spoke his native tongue, proudly bore his country's flag, and hoped for the future. He was as Zoygarian as any other, but why was he king? Why was he chosen, above every other Zoygarian, to lead? Why was he special, so different from any other man, woman, or child? These were the thoughts that raced through King Zobieski's head that cold day in February. He had long pondered why he was deemed fit to rule over a nation of millions without so much as a suggestion from those millions, why he was to inherit these elaborate titles and grand halls, wht he was the head of a nation so cold and distant from the troubles of the world. He was no ordinary King, that was not a doubt in anyone's mind. He walked in the streets of not only Vostok, but Akuí, Dinsk, Etzio, Osovieç... he talked and mingled with his people, he attended fencing and football tournaments, and sat down with every homeless individual he could in an attempt to give them proper company for a change. He was but man— not a god, not chosen by God (though his people certainly believed this), and apart from his station, had no real talents to share. What gave one person the right to rule over others without question?

Zobieski's thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door to his throne room.
"Enter," he said with little energy. Prime Minister Saijto Solski walked in. Zobieski smiled at his friend, but his smile soon vanished as he noted the look of concern on the Prime Minister's face.
"My liege," he began, "terrible news. Governor Javek has just called..."
"Regarding the storm? Are Okada and Sajemi in danger?"
"No, my liege, at least not by the weather. Ulm is moving troops to the border. Our scouts believe they intend to attack."
Zobieski's look of concern only increased as the Prime Minister went on.
"What's more, our strategists anticipate a preemptive strike on the Arastisn colonies. If the Ulmians are here for war, it is more than likely they intend to blitz our holdouts on the Arastian Sea to dampen our naval effectiveness."
"Is there any news from ATSO?"
"No your majesty, all's quiet from the Ale's.*"
King Zobieski thought for a moment.
"Scramble the military, and prepare for war. Do not attack anything until I give the order. They have caught us in a dangerous moment— we cannot send additional support to Aquiląnia while that storm is present. Code Gevé.**"

*Ale— a Zoygarian colloquialism for Germanic/German speaking nations, particularly in reference to ATSO. Comes from Alemagna (Germany), and further Aleman (German language/people), meaning "those who speak German."
**Code Gevé— gevé is the Zoygarian letter [G]. This [G] is short for "guerria," the Zoygarian word for war. Code Gevé means that the state is on the brink of war, but not yet at war.

Esteemed Emperor Drachenritter,

It has come to my attention that a group of your armed forces is nearing the Zoygarian border of Aquilonnia, prepared for war. As I am certain you are well aware that the crossing into Okada will result in the shattering of peaceful relations between our two nations, I shall not waste your time, and adress the matter at hand that I have come to contact you about.

To the Empire of Ulm we offer from Akaramo and Zoygaria payment for the damages sustained in Paradis by the recent terrorist attack. In addition to compensation for the damages caused, Zoygaria and Akaramo offer our services to aid in the rebuilding of Paradis. Should you refuse this offer and continue on your plan of attack, I offer you the full strength of the Zoygarian and Akaramoan military to decimate your armed forces. This is my offer to you, and there will be no negotiation.

Dear King Arristok

I am perfectly aware of what crossing into Okada means. You should not trouble yourself with our forces- they are always prepared for war. As for why they are currently moving through the forests nearing the border the answer is simple- they are taking leisourly walks. After all warriors who risk their lives for the Empire every day cannot be denied small pleasures such as this. I am grateful for your offer but I must respectfully decline because I do not trust anyone other than my subjects with this task. Your second offer sounds tempting. We are ready whenever you are.

Thunder. Lightning. No...
Clouds of grey. A storm. But no rain...
The ground rumbles. An earthquake?
But earthquakes don't leave holes in buildings.
No sun. Then where is the light coming from?
Lightning. Flashes of lightning.
Bang.
Storms don't go bang...
Not lightning... fire...
Not thunder... smoke...
Not tremors... tanks...
This isn't a storm... it's a graveyard...
I take off running, I have no idea where.
The market, the pier, the square, all rubble.
Dust.
Faded memories...
The flag flies. But whose flag is that?
Is isn't red, nor blue.
It's... grey...
I run, they follow. A pack of dogs, surely.
They growl at me, hissing words I can't understand.
Bang.
I duck. I run faster.
Bang, bang.
A flash. Fire?
Pain.
I do see red... just not in the flag...
Bang.
I fall. I tumble. I scrape.
Bang.
The hounds have found me.
Can dogs kick?
Can dogs laugh?
These can. However, I don't hear them.
The only thing I hear is...

I woke up with a start. I hit my alarm clock, but the noise didn't stop. I checked it. 2:40 A.M... then where is that no—
Then it hit me. I need to get outside. I looked up. The flag was still there. I checked around me. Dozens of others, scrambling from their homes, flooding the streets in a single direction. Mrs. Stovoska, Ivka, Sir Abalov, they were all here. There were no words, only the sound. That dreadful sound. The air raid sirens. In the past 12 hours, 9 drills had taken place, including this one. I could faintly hear the echo of the sirens from our neighboring islands...
We moved as a group. We were many, but one. As I walked, I thought to myself. As if there was anything better to do...
In my dream... was it a dream? Those dogs... they weren't dogs, were they?

As the final minutes of silence were coming to an end, Colonel Lars Nowitzki gazed at the peaceful scenery of Aquilonnia. Without doubt it was one of the most beautiful places in the Empire. He hoped to bring his family there someday, but this wish would never come true. They died during terrorist attack on Paradis and he would never see them again. If he was not assigned to Aquilonnian garrison beforehand he would have shared their fate. When he and his troops were informed about the attack they were utterly devastated. They weren't able to say final goodbyes or even attend funerals of their loved ones. What came after sorrow was burning rage which gathered inside them until now when they were finally going to let it loose. They were going to unleash a storm on par with one that was currently heading towards Aquilonnia.
,,Sir, it is time.''
,,You are right. Commence the operation!'' as he gave this order, hell was unleashed. In an instant sounds of wildlife were replaced by deafening gunfire and battlecries, which were soon joined by the sound of howtizers and mortars. Shocktroops and Aquilon militia charged towards the border firing their weapons while running. They were back on the battlefield.

,,Reushenberg and Schurz are both making steady progress towards Zoygarian colonies and they should reach them soon. Mittermeyer is outdoing himself and his fleet is expected to leave territorial waters of Sulter today. It seems that he does not plan on waiting out the storm.''
,,As expected of Mittermeyer. Knowing him he is either going to try to outrun the storm or sail right through it. Contact the other admirals and tell them to prepare for departure. I will inform His Majesty personally.''

Gunshots echoed through the forests outside of Okada. The war had begun. The wails of sirens overwhelmed the densely populated city as thousands of people were evacuated towards the shelters. The streets were in utter chaos: doors to houses lay strewn open from panicked occupants, people of every race, eitnicty, gender, and age flooded the streets in a mass exodus from their homes. Okada was quickly on the road to prosperity, and gained the unofficial title of "Zoygaria's Most Inclusive City." Now, this was all destined to change. Screams and frightened yells emanated from the streets and alleyways as the massive blob of people cascaded towards the newly built hurricane shelters, several of which were unfinished. The fact of the matter was, the entire city was unfinished. Skyscrapers lay dormant, their scaffolding still being placed, and worst of all, Okada's perimeter of defences was primitive at best. A mile or so of trench and three reinforced bunkers were the only "emplacements," with two watchtowers defending the outskirts of the city. The forest, Okada's Ulmian border, was virtually uninhabited save for the trenches and bunkers. It was going to be a slaughter.

Governor Javek was halfway out the door of the Capitol before he stopped himself. He had to ponder his own actions, and he looked down in shame. He had almost done an unforgivably cowardly act, in his eyes. He stood at the door to the capitol, holding it open.
"Everyone on the outside!" he yelled. "If the bunkers fill, seal the doors and retreat to the capitol building as quickly as you can! These walls may not be bulletproof, but it's a lot better than sitting outside."
He quickly dialed Commander Vorieçki, Commander of the Zoygarian 5th Army stationed in Okada.
. . .
No response.

"Blast," he thought. "They've already been engaged..."
He immediately dialed Vostok. With the crackling of guns in the near distance, he only grew more distraught. The war was here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okada, Outskirts, Zoygaria

The crackling of guns set every soldier on edge: it was the sound they had been anticipating, yet nonetheless dreading. Within mere moments, the entire forest was alive with activity. Troops scrambled this way and that, carrying munitions and loading the cannons. Commander Vorieçki shot out from the war room so fast, his phone came flying from his pocket, meekly buzzing on the ground. The orders came from the Commander: shoot everything not Zoygarian, hold the line at any cost. If they breach our defences, plug the hole. If they drive us back, retreat to the city: do not let them take it. The din of shouting and barking orders was almost as deafening as the approaching guns...
"I can't believe it... I still can't believe it..."
"I can't believe the grey's are actually crazy enough to attack us! I'll have whatever their Commander's on."
"It's all happening so fast, I—"
"INCOMING!"
Shells tore the earth asunder as bullets rained from the trees. The Zoygarians returned fire, shooting everything that moved. The Zoygarian 5th Army, a group of 500 men and no vehicles plus a local Aquilonnian militia of 70 men was all that stood between Ulm and Okada. Gritting their teeth, the troops awaited the charge.

A light snow blanketed the mountain city of Vostok. People mingled on the streets, children played in the snow, and vendors set up shop in the marketplace. A beautiful and peaceful scene. Such a stark contrast to the state of Zoygaria's newest territory. Within the Frostfall Palace, King Zobieski sat pensively on his throne, thinking of the threat of war. Had he made the right decision in moving to Code G? To delivering an ultimatum? Or should he have been tougher? Firmer? These thoughts were interrupted by a rapid knock at the door to the throne room. The Royal Guard opened the door, and in walked Saijto Solski, Prime Minister of Zoygaria. The normally calm and levelheaded official wore a look of despair, phone in hand. He bowed to King Zobieski, taking a knee.
"My liege... word from Okada. We are under attack."
The King's face grew grim. He gave a solemn nod in reply, as if anticipating this exact situation.
"Raise the flag. Code Efé*."
The entire palace was abuzz with officials and high command personnel. Outside the palace where the flags of the Commonwealth and Vostok flew, the war flag was raised on the normally vacant pole beside the Zoygarian flag. Zoygaria was now at war.

*Code Efé— Efé is the Zoygarian letter [F], and in this instance, stands for Fuerza, the Zoygarian word for force. Code F is essentially the equivalent to Code Red: war.

Suprisingly enough bullets missed this man even though he always led the charge. Hans gave this some thought and reached conclusion that it was either divine intervention or Zoygarians did not take a man running towards their trench with only a pistol and a sabre seriously. Unfortunetly divine protection must have started to run out because if Hans did not pull the commisar down the hole made by the artillery, it would have been over for him, Gods bless the cannoneer and his bad aim. He was soon joined by the other members of his squad diving headfirst into the hole to avoid the enemy fire.
,,Do you think they would surrender if we asked them nicely?''
,,Why don't you give it a try Otto, they are right here.''
,,No thanks, I will pass.''
,,Less talking, more shooting!''
,,Speak for yourself, Kurt.''
,,Pass me the missile launcher. If artillery cannot silence this bunker, then I will.''
,,With your aim? I do not believe in miracles!''
,,Oh, shut up.''
At this point commisar was visibly annoyed by being ignored by his troops. It looked like he was about to give an inspiring speech, but after being rudely interrupted by a nearby explosion, he seemingly gave up on the idea and focused on laying covering fire. He did not hit enemy even once, but Hans appreciated it. Sadly this did not last long as they were noticed by Zoygarians and forced to duck for cover. Then, artillery finally started to be useful and scored a few direct hits on the bunker.
,,Godess of Victory is smiling upon us!''
,,Why don't she come down there and help us instead?''
Reply was silenced by the sound of gunfire.

,,Who came up with this plan, it's stupid.''
,,It's not stupid, if it works. You can fire a complaint later.''

Okada, Ourskirts, Zoygaria

Whst began as a simple back and forth quickly devolved into an all out firefight. Men who could not reach the safety of the emplacements quick enough dropped left and right, and those who did were greeted with the sight of a much larger force in front of them.
"Get those cannons in better position, and get me some men that can actually aim!"
Despite the conditions and rather disarrayed look of the emplacements, morale was relatively high. It had been decades since Zoygaria had been to war, and her armies were aching to prove themselves as worthy of the history they shared, living out the stories passed down from parent to child.
"Kha! Is that the best they've got? The bunkers aren't even feeling a tickle."
"Shut it, Szokieći."
"Aye, Sergeant."
"What happens if we can't hold them back?"
"Then tonight we dine in hell, brother."
"Whatever awaits us, I'm buying you all a drink."
"Less talking, more shooting. As hilarious as I think you are, we've got a city to defend and grey's to repel. On your feet!"
"Yes, Sergeant!"
"Huá!"
"Aye!"

The bunkers didn't look like much, but looks could be deceiving. 2½ feet of reinforced concrete and steel nestled in the tree infested hills made for quite a difficult box to open up. Scattered about the trenches and treeline were machinegun pillboxes whose sole purpose was to rain down hellfire upon their foes. The treeline made it impossible for tanks and other heavy artillery to penetrate, so cannons, mortars, and light artillery were the only such devices observed on either side. The soldiers that were not entrenched were either cannoneers or sentries, the sentries whose job was to alert the entrenched soldiers of an impending charge, and to halt outflanking maneuvers. However, the defences paled in comparison to other military positions of the Commonwealth. If Okada had been given more time to build prior to the invasion, the city's defences would have been far better developed, and a home fleet would have been assigned to the harbor. Alas, their time was spent, the only thing to worry about was the battle.

Commander Vorieçki rallied his troops in the central bunker, the bunker he had designated as his command bunker. He believed in fighting alongside his troops, not ordering to their deaths from some lounge in Romari. If there was a chance his soldiers would perish, he intended to share in that chance. Exiting the bunker, rifle in hand, he drove for the trench as the door shut behind him and lead whizzed past in all directions. He rallied the troops and the local Sergeants, boosting morale. He looked to the left. A concealed sentry gave him a hand gesture, and he nodded. A squad approaching the trench. It was the 1st Sergeant who gave the command.
"Bravia Company!"
A long line of faces snapped their heads in her direction.
"Fix bayonets!"
The din of gunfire muffled the clicking and fiddling of metal blades in the trench. She looked at Commander Vorieçki for verification if she could proceed. The Commander solemnly nodded.
"God be with you, Havra."
1st Sergeant Havra smiled before once gain facing her entrenched company.
"Bravia Company! On my command!"
What followed was a collective aura. It could be felt by the entire group. A few Aquilonnian conscripts gazed wide eyed at the Zoygarians, stunned by their silence. They kept shooting. There was an air of excitement and fear. Glory and death. The price of a mile.
"Por el Réj!"
"POR EL RÉJ!" Came the cry.
"Por Dio!"
"POR DIO!"
"Por el honor!"
"POR EL HONOR!"
The 1st Sergeant gave one last look at her Company.
"Viva Zoyívska. CHARGE!"
"VIVA ZOYÍVSKAAAAAAA!!!"
A roar emerged from the trees as a company of Zoygarian troops climbed from the trenches, bayonets fixed, and charged towards an advancing squad, firing at will. They only had two objectives in mind. Crush the squad, secure a foothold. A few Aquilonnians in the trenches watched in awe. An entire company charging towards the front lines en masse. Giving their lives for the sake of the rest. The plan was to secure a foothold, but every soldier in that trench understood what it really was: a suicide charge. They would eliminate a squad and serve as a distraction. The Ulmians would have to stop shooting at the trenches in order to stop the rapidly advancing swathe of angry shouting Zoygarians ready to turn them into kebabs. This would give the defenders time to fire unimpeded at their assailants, and send squads to back to the city to ensure a final line of defense. Brave. Honorable. Stupid.

,,Hold soldiers, hold! I claim this hole for the Empire! I will not let enemy have it, no matter the cost!'' Comissar Viktor Mayer was in his element. Although they were taking out Zoygarians one after another, it was only a matter of time before Zoygarian charge would reach their position and Hans was very well aware of that. Grimly he prepared a grenade, determined to deny Zoygarians foothold even if it meant blowing himself up. Then he felt a tap on his shoulder. It was Otto.
,,Hans, turn around. The forest...''
,,Oh...''

,,Oh, now they've done it... I'll give it to those cheese lovers, they've got guts.''
,,Hmph. I thought that this battlefield was not worth our time. I'm glad to be proved wrong.''
By leaving relative safety of trenches Zoygarians gave proud warriors of Ulm challange which they would never decline. They've fought on many battlefields and they knew when they saw a worthy opponet. Rare as such encounters were, response was always the same. They faced them head on, and swiftly sent them to Valhalla.
,,My name is Lars Nowitzki! I ask you men gathered here. WHO ARE YOU?''
,,We are warriors of the Empire.''
,,WARRIORS OF THE EMPIRE! WHAT DO YOU DO?''
,,WE MOVE FORWARD!''
Zoygarians must have not believed their eyes. Abandoning their positions Ulm's shocktroops charged as one showing no hesitation in face of the enemy. Within seconds seemingly endless sea of matte block armour started to flow out of the forest. Unwavering despite the enemy fire, they ran.

"They did it. Those knuckleheads actually did it..."
Commander Vorieçki glanced around at the starstruck men and women around him— The Ulmian front had abandoned their positions to meet the Zoygarian charge. They had an opening.
"Gunners! Concentrate all of your fire on their flanks! I want two platoons out of the trenches and falling back to the city— Aito, you're in command of the retreat."
"A-aye sir! Wait, are you not coming with us?"
"My duty is to these men, and the defence of this city. You are to take as many as you can back to Okada: defend the people at all costs. The rest of us will remain, and hold off the grey's for as long as we can. The day is young; there's time yet to fight."
The captain nodded solemnly as he realized the responsibility he now held. He was now the final line of defense for Okada— just as 1st Sergeant Havra's company sacrificed themselves to buy time for an escape, Commander Vorieçki was throwing away his own life to buy the city time. Everyone was a martyr...

"Come on people, let's move! 2nd platoon, 3rd platoon, with me! 4th platoon 1st and 2nd squad, follow suit! Let's go, let's go!"
"Huá!"
"Someone help me with this gun!"
"Woo, we're goin' home, boys!"
As the troops fled the trenches to the city, the spray of gunfire from the trenches only intensified. Running out of ammo was of no concern— now, each soldier was a weapon. Pillboxes and makeshift turrets rained hellfire upon the Ulmian flanks in an attempt to soften them up. The good news about not having heavy equipment? The Ulmians didn't either. As Bravia Company charged through the trees, bodies dropped one by one. Undaunted, they continued their yell, charging towards the rapidly approaching unit like tortured souls out of hell. They sounded like banshees...

The gunfire eventually stopped from the two advancing legions with no time to reload. The militant soldiers collided, and an all-out melee fight broke out. Bayonets swung through the foliage, with even sabres and tantos taking flight. 1st Sergeant Havra fell during the charge, her last words being a defiant "Go get em', boys..."

The retreating soldiers reached Okada in excellent time, and immediately proceeded to set up makeshift emplacements and assist civilians seeking shelter. Now, every building was a stronghold. The Zoygarians were hopelessly outnumbered, with no chance of relief. However, they would fight from street to street, 'till each soldier breathed no more. The Zoygarian flag flew proudly over the city under the rapidly advancing storm clouds. These final hours would likely be the last time it flew over the city. Not even a mile away, citizens of Sajemi could hear the crackling of guns. They knew that Okada had fallen.

Czovoska, like its sister islands, had been undergoing near constant air raid drill for what seemed like an eternity: Governor Bonreí had developed a headache from the wailing of the alarms.
"Yes, what is it? I was half hoping there would be pleasant news for once today..."
"Unfortunately I have no such news, Gubernator. An Ulmian blockade is approaching our territorial waters."
"Kha! They certainly waste no time, do they?"
The Secretary shook his head in response.
"They clearly don't know who they're dealing with— it's time we give Ulm a little military history lesson. Dispatch the Arastian fleet, and have them contact the blockade. Order them to leave at once. If they refuse, blow those tinfoil ducks out of the water."
"Understood, sir."
Czovoska was classified as a key colony— its flag was red, indicating its importance. Czovoska was the central hub for all Zoygarian commerce through the Atticus and Arastian seas, as well as the naval base of the Arastian fleet, Zoygaria's second largest naval force. What Czovoska and its sister islands lacked in size, they more than made up for in firepower.
However, large as the mighty Zoygarian navy may be, it was fractured. The Oblivion Fleet was still in harbor, construction had not yet begun on the Aquilonnian coast guard, and the Porta Lucian navy was miles away from any sort of aid. This meant that the Arastian fleet was on it's own.

A flotilla of 3 Battleships and 2 Destroyers approached the Ulmian blockade. Rear Admiral Szava'la stepped up to the helm, and radioed the enemy fleet.
"This is Rear Admiral Henryk Szava'la of the Tlaloczki Navy. You are intruding upon Czovoski territory with unauthorized and unregistered vessels. Leave at once, or be destroyed."

Princess Zobieska sat pensively in a quiet corner of the Royal library. The Royal library was one of her favorite places within Povoska to be— secluded, tranquil, and filled with all the books one could ever feign interest in. Though she was clutching a copy of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, it was not the book she was looking at. From an outside perspective, it appeared as though she was reading. However, her mind was elsewhere. She was thinking of her people, as she often did. She valued their wellbeing more than anything else, and all too often came a decision she felt might put them at risk.

The people of Povoska loved their Princess. She was highly educated, humble, kind, beautiful, and had a deep respect for her subjects. Unlike her father, she preferred to shy away from public eye, keeping to herself even within the massive walls of the Kolbek palace. However, she frequented local libraries and cafes around Priśtinja, and was unafraid to make a public announcement when necessary.
Though, it could also be said that she overextended herself. Always prioritizing the welfare of her staff and citizenry, she often stayed up late into the night, or found herself over encumbered with tasks. When forced to make executive decisions, she often took an immense amount of time weighing and fretting over each nuance and possible outcome, and how it might impact Povoska down the line. Oh how shocked she was with the declaration of war.

Normally, tensions escalated over time, and slowly built up into each and every crevasse of a situation, eventually bursting into war. However, the most recent conflict all over the news was entirely spontaneous, and left the entire world seeking answers. People were preemptively dubbing it "The Lightning War" due to how suddenly it sparked up. The Principality of Povoska was a member of the Imperial Commonwealth, but followed different rules than other Zoygarian colonies due to its status as Principality. Ruled by the Zoygarian heir, it made decisions independent of Vostok, and was given the same independent authority as a Protectorate might have. When Vostok declared war, each colony declared war, exempting Povoska. The colonies could release official declarations, but once war was declared from the mainland, the colonies were automatically roped in. Povoska however, was different. Like a Protectorate, it could declare its own neutrality or engagement as an independent nation. Like a Protectorate, it had its own division of seats in parliament. With all this in mind, Princess Zobieska was one faced with a choice. Aid the motherland, or stay neutral? She feared for the worst. For now she would wait. Watch and wait. Listen and wait. She shook herself from her stare, and resumed reading.

In contrast to Zoygarians shocktroops fought in silence entirely focused on the battle. Many of them were survivors from attack on the Fort 1321 during pacification of the UD and even shovels became deadly weapons in their hands. Those who were not engaged in melee combat continued to charge at the enemy positions. As they emerged from smoke they looked more like a devils than humans. They ignored bullets flying around them and continued their assalut while returning fire.

Response from Admiral Schurz and Admiral Reushenberg was immidiete although problably not what Zoygarian Rear Admiral expected. 5th and 4th Fleet opened fire at the 5 approaching ships in one coordinated barrage without any warning and aircraft started taking off from carriers. It was clear that they were not in a mood for diplomacy. They were given order from their Emperor and they would carry it out without fail.

One by one, the brave soldiers of Bravia Company fell to the ground, fighting until their last dying breath. The odds were hopeless— no Zoygarian offensive could dream of breaking the Ulmian lines. The entrenched soldiers fought silently, mourning the deaths of their comrades. The most anyone could hope for was that they bought the rear guard enough time to defend the city... and do what?

Commander Vorieçki sunk into the trench as the sheer hopelessness of the situation truly set in. They were a mere 570, a number that was quickly falling, against a force much larger than theirs. They were isolated with no hope of rescue from the mainland, no navy or coast guard of their own, and the distinct possibility of an Ulmian fleet following the storm. The trenches would likely be overrun— there was no hope of defeating the Ulmians, only stalling them as long as possible. But why? With no hope of victory... why?

A nearby explosion shook the Commander out of his daze. He understood. It was a symbol. It was duty. A wise man once said; "I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees." This was the Zoygarian way. A Zoygarian never backed down until death took him by the throat and dragged him under. Okada would not surrender for Ulm. Ulm would have to come and take it.

As the last of Bravia Company fell, the Commander resumed his position. With newfound drive, he called: "Soldiers! Who do you fight for?"
"Zoygaria!" came the reply.
"Then let us make Zoygaria proud."
An incoherent sound of approval was voiced by the scattered soldiers, trying to avoid sticking too-far out of the trenches. Their time was almost here, but they would be swinging their fists until the last.

Okada, Southern Aquiląnia, Zoygaria

The small group of soldiers emerged from the forest bearing guns, mortars, and boxes of ammunition. The few remaining people outside at first let out cries of joy—
"They're here," many exclaimed. "Our soldiers are here!"
Their smiles left them as they realized what that meant.
"Set this cannon up! Double time!"
"Hey, why are you civies out here?! Get to those shelters, there's no time!"
A loud crash filled the air, preventing the soldier from addressing the people again. The storm had arrived.

The grey skies loomed over the city, a harbinger of the grey days yet to come. Sergeant Aito approached the Governor, who was still making sure everyone made it to safety.
"Lovely weather we're having, eh?"
Aito gave the Governor a half smile and nodded.
"The bunkers will hold."

"I wish there was more we could do... you should take shelter with us."

"Negative, sir. My duty is to defend them."

He gestured to the few remaining civilians left, and to his small group of men.
"Is there any chance of evacuation to Sajemi? Japan is neutral, so Ulm shouldn't attack it."

"I'm afraid not, sir. The road has not yet been finished, and that storm will capsize any boats we send out if the Grey's don't get them first."
Governor Javek momentarily grew pale.

"What... what will happen to the people, Sergeant? When the Ulmians come, I mean."
Aito furrowed his brow.

"There's no telling, sir. But, judging by how Ulm attacked without warning and how they dealt with their own insurgents, I doubt the standard of life will be agreeable."

"... Take care, soldier."

Aito nodded, and went back to his troops.

In seconds, Tajfún went up in smoke. Rear Admiral Szava'la both was and was not expecting such an... immediate response.
"All batteries, fire, fire! Blow those guppies out of the water."
Tajfún, heavily damaged, struggled to train her guns. As she began to list, she sent out an S.O.S. to Oszk harbor. She let out a few defeated volleys before slowly starting to tilt nose-first into the blue. The remaining four ships, moving to cover for their comrade, let loose a salvo of lead that could level a forest. The smoke released from the guns was so thick and plentiful that the gunners began to have trouble discerning cloud from powder.

In the harbor, the fleet stirred. Tajfún's distress call had not gone unheard. The Arastian fleet mobilized as the Voloski flotilla left their waters, setting a rendezvous point with the Czovoski navy. The fleet is coming.

The rippling waves of Osovieç harbor rocked the steel behemoths that lay dormant in its waters. Grey skies dropped small flakes of white in an inconsistent pattern, the snowfall not dense enough to remain on the stone walkways of the city. From Etzio, a flotilla of 25 ships slowly advanced to the Osovieç docks,
nearly taking up the entire harbor when combined with the ships already present. The harbor had closed a few hours prior in preparation for a large-scale operation, the likes of which had not been seen for centuries.

The Zoygarian war machine has awoken.

Grand Admiral Saitori stepped off the deck of the Transcendence and onto the cobblestone road connecting the Osovieç harbor to the rest of the city. "A rather grey city," he thought, "not as grand as Etzio, but worth fighting for." His right hand, Admiral Sonja Paraçí, slowly walked over to where he was standing. Neither said a word. Saitori leaned on the metal railing of the pier, and Paraçí followed suit, allowing her wrists to dangle from the bar. For a while, the pair sat in silence, watching the grey waves crash against the stone walkway on which they stood. Finally, Admiral Paraçí spoke. "Been a long time, hasn't it?" "Mm," Saitori replied. He didn't have to say anything— she knew what he was thinking. "They won't get this far." When he didn't reply, she continued: "We are the Mara Belí. We are the mightiest Navy in the world. We are the scourge of the seas. But most importantly, we're all in this together. You, me, the men and women on those boats, the people in this city. We're all Zoygarian— we breathe the same air, walk the same streets, fly the same flag, bleed the same blood. We will all give our lives for this country you and I serve. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I think you and I both know how meaningless hoping is right now. What we need is action, and that's exactly what we're doing. Even if we fail... I doubt the Grey's will do anything drastic. They may be crazy, but they aren't barbarians. Burning a city and slaughtering its people won't get them anywhere. Besides, that's why people like you and I are here. Because people's lives are at stake, and we're the wall that shelters them. Simple as that." Saitori offered a wry smile. "You never fail to amaze me, old friend. It's truly an honor to serve by your side." The two shared a brief embrace before Saitori said: "Let's give 'em hell." Paraçí smiled and returned to the main part of the pier, arranging the fleet.

Fifty ships left the Osovieç harbor on that grey, snowy day. Fifty titans of steel and lead, waving the Zoygarian Naval Jack and Zoygarian Flag.
Five Imperium-Class Destroyers: Transcendence, the flagship of the Mara Belí, crown of the Imperial Navy and pride of Zoygaria, captained by Grand Admiral Eolas Saitori, Resplendence, captained by Admiral Sonja Paraçí, Delphi, captained by Admiral Mikhael Jarovitz, Princess of Povoska, captained by Rear Admiral Philipo Tha'sók, and Defiance, captained by Rear Admiral Anja Hol'sza.
Six Aircraft Carriers: Arkhadia, Omnipotence, Helios, Kosmos, Leviathan, and Helga.
Fifteen Thyphoon-Class Battleships: Perseverance, Justice, Repentance, Uragán, Aegis, Kestrel, Reverence, Resolute, Fortitude, Independence, Belligerence, Oszk, Sakura, Spiedska, and Karolina.
Seventeen Lancer-Class Light Battleships: Resurgence, Resilience, Akuí, Majesta Imperiál, Ascendance, Flora de li Norte, Harpy, Arkhon, Hussar, Benevolence, Opulence, Queen Emilia, Protector, Kolbek, Arbiter, Guardian, and Tempest.
Seven Banner-Class Light Frigates: St. Aleksi, Golden Eagle, Patience,
Barricade, Bombardier, Valkyrie, and Phaeton.

The Oblivion Fleet sailed north from Osovieç, Zoygaria to Priśtinja, Povoska. There, they would stock up, fuel up, and depart for the open seas. Many would never return.

Battle in Aquilonnia raged on. Shocktroops were now upon the Zoygarian fortifications, closing in fast. Grenades flew overhead and descended on the trenchline. After majority of them went off, shocktroops were inside and engaged Zoygarians in melee without giving them a chance to recover. Zoygarians fought with desperation, but they faced superior numbers and elite of REU's army. It was not a question if they could win or lose. It was a question how many they could take with them. One by one they died standing. Those who could retreated into the bunkers where the resistance continued. Advance was temporarily halted. Colonel Lars Nowitzki now stood on the sea of corpses that remained. Zoygarians, Ulmians and Aquilonnians, all equal in death. He noticed Commisar Viktor Mayer ordering the medic teams, his commanding voice could be heard well. He lost an eye and an arm but even after that he continued to perform his duty, such was his devotion to the Emperor. Lars slowly walked through the trench, stopping in front of one of the remaning bunkers. Two squads of shocktroops were standing next to the entrance making sure that no Zoygarian tried to counterattack as their brethern recovered and awaiting his order to storm the bunker. One of them was carrying a flamethrower.

Admiral Erwin Mittermeyer stood on the command deck of his flagship. Zoygarians did not answer to his hails. Although 2nd Fleet was a direct opposite of Empire's naval doctrine and was composed of variants focused rather on speed and agility than firepower and armour, it was more than enough to enforce his demands. Lobo was problably the weakest out of all of Palatine-Class Battleships, custom-made for Empire's admiralty. Even so it towered over two modified Witterheim-Class variants, it's more common counterparts that accompanied it on it's approach. There were only two types of people, who did not feel fear and awe when seeing a Palatine. Fools and the dead. He ordered the rest of fleet to stay behind with Blanca. Losing the only carrier in his fleet would have been unfortunate. He did not expect much resistance from the city, but being cautious never hurt.

,,Any news from the Zoygarians?''
,,None, Admiral.''
,,What about the frontlines?''
,,Zoygarian lines were breached. Those who remain either fell back to the city or continue to resist us from the bunkers.''
,,Order LuT-20s to fly over the city and get us target solutions on their defenses. If they do not answer before we reach the city, begin to strike the priority targets.''

His Will moved right on time to shield Firstorm from the incoming barrage, saving the carrier. Admiral Reushenberg braced himself as Warmind screamed, blaring impact warnings and flashing red on the tactical display. Palatine trembled under the hits, but he forced himself to remain standing. Right after that it sounded it's warhorn and returned the blow. Aircraft joined the fray painting the sides of Zoygarian warships with fire.

,,Damage report.''
,,Two batteries are immobile and damaged, internal damage, at least three compartments sealed themselves. Warmind is still assessing the losses. Reaver and Agonizer also took hits, but it is nothing they cannot handle. Admiral Shurz wishes to inform you that there is new activity and he plans to intercept the enemy before they link up. Rosenrot and 4th Fleet are already on the move. Wolfpacks are aiding them from underwater.''
,,To think that they could penetrate our armor. Reaver, Agonizer, Altgraf Wilbert, form up on us. Wasp and Stingray, keep your distance and aid us with missile volleys. The rest of you, aid the 4th Fleet.''

After his command was acknowledged, Admiral Schurz turned his attention back to the enemy. He wanted the remaining Zoygarian ships burning and as dead as they can get. And what better way to ensure victory than to secure it yourself?

I Territorial Waters of Southern Sulter and Anthropelia I Flagship of the 7th Fleet ,,Gram''

Emperor Siegfried Von Drachenritter sat on his throne as reports started to come through the Warmind once again. He watched as hundreds of warships and transports sailed through the storm, ready to bring fire and blood to those who dared to raise their hands against the Empire. Nay, they were the storm. Aquilonnia was as good as theirs with Mittermeyer there and he trusted Shurz and Reushenberg to carry out their duties as well. Indeed, it would have been humilating if they failed with their Palatines and fleets that they led. What concerned him was not Zoygarians, but the Penal Colony. Several days ago it's troop tansport ships and their escorts arrived and joined the rest of the crusade fleet. Afterwards communication with it was lost. Governor Marko Dassler was a diligent man, he would need to assume the worst. His predecessor, mentor and friend Bertran Weber warned him about the old enemy many times before he perished in the terrorist attack on Paradis. According to rumors he was attempting to evacuate citizens until fire cut him off from escape routes and he met his death. He and others like him would be avanged in due time, Cárcere Norulo would not escape the punishment for his crimes. Fenris seemed to sense his emotions and mirrored his bloodlust baring his fangs. Great wolf was one of the few friends that Emperor could rely on in those hard times, all were busy waging or planning war. He forced himself to focus on task at hand. Lingering anger would cloud his judgement and give his many enemies an edge. He needed to make a choice. It was likely that the biggest arms manafacturer in the Reborn Empire of Ulm fell into the hands of the old enemy. Last time it took entire might of ASTO to crack it and drag them out. He could not afford to fight a war on many fronts, Reborn Empire of Ulm was too weakened. He would need to strike at Akaramo swiftly and brutally, cripple it, and then return to reclaim what was lost.

I have had more time lately, it was the few weeks ago and before when I was very, very busy. I would have finished the RP post way earlier, were it not for my terrible ever-changing schedule. I am not very busy right now, but it is hard for me to devote myself to writing something while having to divert my attention constantly and multitasking. Previously I either lacked time or motivation and ideas so I decided to write it one part at a time.

Regarding the RP post: I rushed the combat in Aquilonnia a bit because it was already taking very long. I will edit it if necessary. Fun fact: custom made oversized battleship that REU's admirals use were originally called Imperators but I decided to change it to Palatines in order to avoid confusion with Zoygarian Imperium-Class. This name makes more sense anyway.
That is a major miscalculation on part of Zoygarian admirals. True, usually Reborn Empire of Ulm respects the rules of engagement. Fight well and they may even let you go and fight another day. However, that does not apply in some cases, one of them being a situation when the enemy has already broken the rules of engagement and such is the case with Akaramo. Even worse, the target was civilian population and the very capital of Reborn Empire of Ulm. Akaramanos made a critical mistake: they made it personal. This is not your usual honorbound Reborn Empire of Ulm. They are not fighting for some cause or to expand their empire. They are here to take vengeance and set an example. Zoygarians can expect to be treated fairly well and if they get captured, the worst they will get is a glare. Akaramanos have no such luxury. Empire is fully set on giving them the very same treatment they gave Paradis. They might not have been barbarians before, but now they are blood crazed berserkers.

When I mentioned the burning of cities and slaughter of civilians, I was more referring to Zoygaria, not necessarily Akaramo. I'm not sure if I've ever really explained it before, but this is about Grand Admiral Saitori. Saitori is an old, grizzled war veteran, and not much shakes him. He has vowed to fight and die for his country, and as the head Admiral of the navy, has immense pressure and responsibility weighing down on him. He suffers from Survivor's Guilt, believing he should have perished along with so many of his men in past wars, but he did not.
Etzio is his city. He was born elsewhere, but has spent most of his life living in Etzio, the helm of the Oblivion Fleet and most important Zoygarian port. It's a beautiful and mesmerizing city, often called "The Golden City" or "Gem of the North." He is less concerned about what happens to him in battle, and more concerned about Etzio, and the people within it. In Saitori's eyes, were his fleet to fail and a city like Etzio to be burned and destroyed, death would not be suitable punishment for himself.

Plus, I would be really sad if my beautiful historical cities were burned ;(

Very interesting character backstory, an opponent worthy of Schillinger. As mentioned in the RP post, Zoygaria is not the target of this campaign. Zoygarian colonies are being merely blockaded, not invaded for that reason. Aquilonnia was only attacked because of it's strategical importance as navy base. Possibility of attack on Zoygaria is very small. To be frank REU does not have resources to prolong the war. National industry was crippled after the terrorist attack and all that remains is devoted to restoration. Situation in UD is unclear and siege may happen. Army is running on stockpiles and whatever ARA has to offer. It will take a while before further colonies aid the mainland. If REU attempts it, it will most likely by a quick raid on shipyards or bombardment of air bases. Probability of Zoygarian civilian areas and sites of heritage being targeted is nearly zero. It won't happen unless someone places important military assets in the vicnity.

The end seemed near. Commander Vorieçki was crouched near a small radio in the trench near his command bunker, from which sporadic shouts and cries were emitted.
"We're being overrun!" came one voice. "They're in the trenches!" came another. It quickly became hard to breathe in the trenches simply due to the sheer amount of smoke filling the forest. The eastern bunker had fallen, leaving the central and western bunkers still standing. Commander Vorieçki ordered as many troops inside the bunker as the structure could accommodate, leaving himself and the remaining western troops in the smoke-filled trench. Before the door to the bunker closed, the Commander addressed his troops.

"Men... comrades... today, we fought hard. We were told to hold the border, and that is what we did. We held the line until we could hold no more. We are faced against insurmountable odds, with no hope of relief. This battle... it is lost. In most cases, a defeat such as this would mean surrender. However, I know most of us aren't keen on the idea of becoming POW's, unless we have some serious issues." This elicited a small chuckle from the group of soldiers, lightening the mood ever so slightly. "To those who seek to determine their own fate, go to Okada— aid in her defence. Whether you die in battle or surrender to a vicious foe, know that you fought with honor— and your actions for Okada, for Zoygaria, shall never be forgotten. And to those who would stand with me here, I grant you two options— surrender, live to fight another day, and know that you have learned the greatest lesson of all— the importance of life, and the prevention of meaningless bloodshed. Or, raise your arms in defiance, and stubbornly refuse to be subdued by anything other than force. I leave the choice to you. But know that, no matter what you choose— you have fought with honor, and that honor will never fade." The Commander saluted the men in front of him, who did the same. "Gens una, unus populus."

Ten men clambered from the trenches and ran through the forest back to Okada, weapons in hand. Twelve lay their weapons before Commander Vorieçki, each bowing and saluting the Commander, exchanging somber final words with their leader. The remaining twenty raised their rifles, and took positions within the command bunker and the western trench lines as twelve men marched single file down the trench with their hands raised. As they passed, they relayed the Commander's message to the Zoygarian and Aquilonnian soldiers they encountered. Some joined them in their solemn march, others ran down the trench in the opposite direction to support the Commander. In the end, 46 soldiers, the Commander included, waited at the end of the western trench and bunker, while a long line of soldiers wistfully sang La Marszą de la Korónia as they marched eastward down the trench.

Sergeant Aito was shocked to see nearly a dozen Zoygarian infantrymen emerge from the forest, but he was nonetheless appreciative of the support. Roughly three platoons and three squads of soldiers scrambled about the city, setting up gun emplacements and fortifying buildings. One Corporal discovered a box of nails left behind by workers, and spewed its contents across the entrance of the building he and his troops were within. Sergeant Aito dispatched a squad of troops further into the city, who then divided themselves into two groups— one entered the Capitol building to guard the civilians inside, and the other guarded the exterior of the unfinished hurricane shelters. The remaining troops spread across various vantage points in the city, attempting to ensure they had multiple escape routes if things went awry. The first raindrops fell to the ground with a soft pitter-patter on the concrete. Within minutes, the sky opened up, unleashing a torrent of rain from the heavens above, thunder and lightning punctuating the rain's imposing statement.

Shocktroops were organized and ready for action once more earning them approval of Colonel Lars Nowitzki. Understrenght squads were fused together and brought back to full combat efficiency. Wounded were tended to and awaited transportation in field hospital, soon they would be transported to better facilities, he was assured that Utility Transports of the 2nd Fleet were on their way. Report given to him by his aide confirmed his expectations, Aquilonnian militia took the worst casualties during the assalut. They were untrained, ill-equipped and worst of all, they lacked experience which veterans of shocktroops did not have enough time to share. They would do better next time. His own troops did not emerge unscathed either, but that was to be expected, attacking entrenched enemies was never pleasant. His soldiers were now standing at attention, ready to resume battle. He was about to give the order, but was interrupted by the sound of singing and footsteps. As one shocktroops turned into a flurry of motion, taking up to positions. ,,Hold fire.'' he commanded. If enemy wanted to attack, they wouldn't be advancing slowly and would try to conceal the noise. Soon he was proved correct. A single file of Zoygarians and Aquilonnians emerged and stopped abruptly noticing weapons aimed at them. ,,Restrain them and escort them back to Careia. They are to be treated humanely, they are not Akaramanos.'' His subordinates were on it before he finished his order. He knew that that there were more of them, meaning that those who remained in bunkers would fight to the last man. ,,2nd Fleet is here men, they should be reaching Okada as we speak and we will not keep them waiting. Otto, rearrange the architecture.'' At his command trooper planted a breaching charge on the closed entrance of the bunker and all of them got clear. They did not have to wait long until it went off. Each of them threw a grenade inside and trooper to his right sealed the previously opened entrance with his combat shield almost instantly, they were taking no chances. As expected Zoygarians did not fancy being blown up and opened fire. Despite that, the shield held by strength and determination of the soldier until he was sent flying with it, no doubt a result of a returned grenade stopped by the shield. Nevertheless, majority of explosions must have happened deeper into the bunker, Colonel judged. He did not follow his troops inside the Zoygarian fortification and walked up to the fallen trooper who was being tended to by one of the medics. His survival was a testament to the quality of the equipment manafactured by the Paradis Industries. Gramstadt Industries as they were now called, he corrected himself bitterly. Atmosphere on the bridge was visibly heavy. Admiral Erwin Mittermeyer did not expect Zoygarians to surrender, but hoped that they would evacuate the civilians before entrenching inside. Either they presumed that death awaited them anyway or they thought that he was bluffing. They were mistaken in both cases. Lobo and it's escorts were now in positions and ready to fire. He cursed his assignment and Zoygarian pride. He was no general, but thanks to the reconaissance provided by LuT-20s he could discern between what seemed to be Zoygarian defenses and what looked like areas densely packed with non-combatants. He knew that his crew assisted by Warmind would do their best to strike the targets but he would be the one scorned worldwide for any civilian deaths if they missed or one of the targets turned out to be above a shelter.

,,Admiral, what are your orders?''

,,It gives me no pleasure, but we have given them numerous warnings and made it pretty clear that civilian areas are not civilian areas when there are enemies inside. I am a man of my word. We have our orders and we will take this city intact or in ruins. Begin the shelling and hope that you strike true.''

Effectiveness of submarines in naval guerilla warfare was previously demonstrated by the Empire itself during it's first large conflict in the region. Falling for your their own tricks would have been shameful. Missile boats, fast attack crafts, frigates and corvettes ventured ahead ensuring that no enemy lurked below. They were assisted by Empire's own submersibles which were previously deployed in this area and ordered to join the Crusade as it progressed. More powerful vessels such as destroyers, cruisers and battleships were the main body of the formation. Some of them were in the vanguard with the strongest of them all- The Palatines. Awe inspiring battleships sailed at the front, each proof of the might of the Imperial Navy. Flagships of the Emperor's chosen admirals were known to be able to turn the tide on their own even when outnumbered by enemies matching it's own class. Being given command of Palatine was a sign of being recognised by the Emperor himself and an honor preceding creation of a new fleet. Soon they were joined by another one of it's brethern, harbinger of 8th Fleet's arrival. No Palatine is the same as they are made on order to align with favourite strategies and doctrines of the admirals. Confusion of foes who could not comprehend differences between each ship of supposedly the same type made a nice bonus. Yet as 8th Fleet joined up with the rest of the strike force even many navy veterans were confused. Calling sign of every Palatine and battleship was their massive main batteries. Flagship of the 8th Fleet had none disqulifying it from the ranks of the battleships, it's hull almost naked despite silhouette and size of Palatine being unmistakeable. If this Palatine was not a battleship, then what was it? Pretender's capabilities would soon be revealed to foe and ally alike.

The trenches were alight with the flare of guns. As Ulmian shocktroops stormed the bunkers en masse, the entrenched Zoygarian and Aquilonnian troops quickly found themselves facing more men than they had ammunition. Grenades soared into the confined space, spewing shrapnel and incapacitating countless soldiers. Whilst the Zoygarians could pick off the bottlenecked Ulmian troops, it wasn't long before the bunker went silent. Commander Vorieçki noted the absence of gunfire, and closed his eyes in prayer. It was now their turn. Before long, Ulmian and Aquilonnian shocktroops and infantry closed in on the Commander's position. His men looked to him, and he gave a solemn nod.
"Give 'em hell."
The end of the trench unleashed a storm of bullets, the Zoygarians lobbing what few grenades they had left farther down the trench. Minutes passed. Half an hour. An hour. As the Zoygarian barrage trickled to a stop, so did time. Vorieçki sat in a daze. He now found himself sitting upright against the wall of the trench, his ears ringing. Before him lay 32 Zoygarian and Aquilonnian soldiers, and countless more Ulmians farther down the trench, both alive and dead. They looked like shadows...

What looked to Vorieçki like an officer emerged from the smoke, looking down at the 14 bleeding men, the Commander included. Some desperately crawled in front of the Commander, trying to form one last shield before collapsing from pain and fatigue. The Commander, only half conscious, looked up at the officer, and said: "Qui sorpresa?"*

*What a surprise? (Sarcastic remark)

Explosion rocked the sky and city around them.

"We're under fire!"
"Help us!"

Concrete and steel rained from the buildings above, accompanied by a torrential downpour of rain. Buildings came down like timber as the once pristine city was slowly leveled. Some troops were forced to completely abandon their positions as their cover was blown away by the barrage, while others remained trapped in the debris. Sergeant Aito rallied what men they could, ordering them to take immediate cover, abandoning the emplacements if necessary. He had expected hell, but the bombardment of a city? He never imagined the Ulmians would decimate a civilian area with trapped people still in it.

The hurricane shelters were thankfully not targeted, but Aito worried about the Capitol building— it was not clearly a shelter, and there were dozens of civilians and soldiers alike taking shelter within its walls, including the governor.

He cursed to himself, wishing they had been able to finish the shelters before war broke out. His fears were soon realized as a crumbling skyscraper collided with the capitol, bringing both structures to the ground, the Okadan flag fluttering helplessly on the way down.

He watched as several men guarding the shelters scrambled to the fallen building, but he held his position— The Ulmian troops would likely follow the bombardment, and he didn't want any more bullets flying towards civilians than would already be present. As shells tore thr ground around them, the small group prayed for the safety of their comrades and people, and awaited the ill-fated Ulmian charge.[/spoiler]

Fifty Zoygarian ships docked in Aquafria Bay, to the cheers of watching Povoski. They were not permitted to assist in the loading of the ships, but many engaged in pleasant conversation with the Zoygarian sailors, giving them gifts and flowers. Princess Luna decided to take the long walk from the Palace to the docks, where the Oblivion Fleet rested. It dwarfed Povoska's home fleet, a measly seven ships and one submarine. Soldiers saluted and civilians bowed as she walked by, her white dress flowing behind her. She stopped at a railing overlooking the pier, where the fleet refueled and supplies were loaded onto the boats. Several Zoygarian Su-33's soared above the city, circling above before landing on the carriers.

Nearly every Povoski had watched the news broadcast announcing the Zoygarian declaration of war on Ulm. It all happened so fast that no one really knew what to think at the time. Even now there had been no response from Japan— Luna wondered how her sister had taken the news. As for herself, she was deeply troubled not only by the war, but the Zoygarian fleet docked on her shores. With the Mara Belí at her doorstep, every Povoski would be expecting Luna to declare war on Ulm, and send Povoska's navy to fight alongside Zoygaria's. For her though, it was not so simple. First and foremost, she worried about her people. If Povoska joined the war and Ulm smashed the combined Armada, the Zoygarian reserve fleet would not be enough to protect Povoska. She wasn't keen on the idea of sending her soldiers to fight and die in a war that hadn't yet enveloped her country, and was even less keen on endangering her civilian population. Her thoughts were interrupted by Grand Admiral Saitori.

"Good day, your majesty," he said with a bow, removing his cap. She curtsied in return, and replied, "Good day, Admiral."

"Will you be joining us in the fight, my lady?"

She was quiet for a bit before answering.

"I do not wish to endanger my people. Povoska shall maintain its neutrality."

"I understand," Saitori said with a smile. "That's very noble of you. I've come to thank you for your generosity— with fresh supplies and fuel, there will be far fewer casualties on the high seas."

"That is my hope, Admiral. If you wish, I invite you and your sailors to stay a night here in Povoska before venturing off to sea."

"I must respectfully decline, your majesty— we are on a tight schedule, and we've no time to lose."

"Ah, I see. Admiral, I wish you and your men the best of luck in your war. Know that Povoska wishes you well."

Saitori bowed. "Your majesty." He did an about face, and returned to the docks. Later that day, the Oblivion Fleet would sail into the sunset as Povoska's people watched in silence. Luna returned to her duties.

Colonel Lars Nowitzki now stood inside the trench, every inch of it a testament to the violence that erupted inside. Bodies were sprawled all around and the floor was wet with blood. Some of those on the ground still lived, among them enemy commander if intel was to be trusted. Zoygarian said something in his language, not that Lars would understand. Shocktroops did not take any chances, defenders who were still conscious were immediately knocked out. Medics that were not busy with their countrymen attended to the enemies and prevented them from bleeding out. They were rough, they hardly had any kindness to spare for enemies who fought against their brothers not so long ago. Still, they were professionals and Nowitzki was positive that at least some of the enemies would survive. They put up admirable resistance, maybe even worthy of a song. Not that it mattered. Even if Zoygarians were valiant they were still enemies to be hated for protection they offered to their accursed allies. It disgusted Nowitzki to have to fight through them just to get to the Akaramano terrorists, each of the defenders was worth more than hundreds of the despicable scum. In the end trenchline was broken and Okada no longer so charming. Shocktroops reported success across the entire front and all that was left was a few defenders scurrying in the rubble. Either way the faster he finished the faster he could spill some Akaramano blood and get his vengeance.

Admiral cursed under his breath as he saw skyscraper collide with the capitol. He was nearly sure that there were civilians inside. It was not the first time he turned the might of his Palatine on a city. In fact it gave him satisfaction on numerous occasions. But that was different. It was natural for soldiers to die for their allies as oath demanded but civilians living in Okada had nothing to do with atrocity commited by Akaramanos.

,,Cease shelling! Limit fire to targets chosen by our compatriots on the ground!'

His order was obeyed without question. Either way Zoygarian defences could no longer be considered even remotely cohesive. Few parts Okada were still standing surrounded by piles of rubble. Hardly defensible, especially when attackers had uncontested control of the air. He wished that they would just surrender already. The city that they wanted to protect was in ruins now and their continued resistance only put civilians at risk. But that was wishful thinking. They wouldn't surrender, he would do the same if the positions were reversed. His role in this play was done, now it was up to Colonel Nowitzki to finally end this battle.

The hail of lead seemed never-ending. The cornered Zoygarians were pinned down on all sides: they took shelter in rubble, sewage pipes, and the remains of buildings— anything to protect themselves from the cold death raining upon them. Sergeant Aito and a squad of his men had taken up positions in and around the drainage ditches of the city to provide some shelter from the cruisers raining hellfire on their positions. The ditches would provide some camouflage and, hopefully, choke points with which to counter an Ulmian advance. However, if the water continued rising, soon they wouldn't need camouflage: they would be dead anyways.

Slowly but surely, the Ulmian barrage trickled to a snail's pace. They were still firing on the city, but with most of the buildings turned to dust, they could be more precise with their targets, conservative with their shells. Aito took the opportunity to have himself and a few others scout the terrain, and see if they could salvage a few of the guns they had set up. A thick layer of dust had overtaken the ruined streets, and combined with the pelting rain, made visibility a nightmare. The troops cautiously moved about, hoping no stray artillery shells found them before they found their emplacements. Miraculously, two of the five tripods they had set up were still intact. The rest lay in pieces, or were simply gone. The group brought them back to their makeshift trench, and prepared for combat. Sergeant Aito radioed any troops able to listen.

"Soldiers of Zoygaria: this is Sergeant Aito. The enemy is coming. Use the low visibility and rubble to your advantage— The enemy can't hit what they can't see. Use what vantage points you can, and always stay near cover. God be with you."

As he put down the radio, over the heavy rainfall, he heard the sound of boots on concrete: the Ulmians had arrived.

OOC: Ulm, I'm fully ready to end the Battle of Okada here with this next post. Obviously a defeat for Zoygaria, though if I may request some things? The remaining Zoygarians will doubtlessly be annihilated, and there are some still alive, but injured in the rubble. As far as how many Ulmians they (the defenders) take with them, I'll leave that up to you. The hurricane shelters are intact and still filled with people, and are guarded by two squads of soldiers. They will likely surrender for the sake of the people, or be too busy trying to clear the rubble of the capitol building to notice. Governor Javek is alive, albeit injured from the building's collapse.

Perhaps we should make battles shorter and more decisive in the future? Otherwise the war might take forever XD
I advise we flesh out the writing with our "main characters" and focal points (ex: Nova/Reaper Squadron), and make the less-major battles shorter, if that makes sense.

Reborn Empire of Ulm wrote:It all makes sense but is this what we really want? We already spent many months fighting this way and ending it like that seems anticlimatic to me. Battle of Aquilonnia was supposed to be prelude to the true war. I have nothing against turning it into battle reports but I think that it is the individuality that makes those RP posts interesting. Additionally keeping everything detailed and adding perception of character prevents confusion. When the amount of detail is reduced misunderstandings inevitably follow. I am not sure about everyone else but Zoygarian RP posts without that would feel alien to me.I really should have checked previous examples. Big oof.

Zoygarian defense quickly receded . Seeing destruction wrought by 2nd Fleet upon the city many of them surrendered, concerned for the safety of civilians should shocktroops bring war into the city center in the same destructive fashion. Last pockets of resistance were eliminated with mechanical precision. Afterwards shocktroops assisted in excavation and rescue of buried civilians who were later escorted to Sajemi. As the highest ranking officer present and de facto commander of all forces in Aquilonnia, Admiral Erwin Mittermeyer offered Sajemi authorities help in providing humanitarian aid in the Empire's name. Captured Zoygarian and Aquilonnian soldiers were sent to two prisons located in the capital of Aquilonnia- Careia. Officers and soldiers they commanded were of course separated between the two. Commander Vorieçki and Governor Javek were confined to house arrest in Winter Residence of Imperial Household in Careia. When Admiral deemed entire island secure, he ordered forces of 2nd Fleet and garrison to begin preparations to receive the Ashen Crusade and further fortify the island. Originally Aquilonnia was supposed to be a tourist destination and free of militarization visible in every part of the Empire. That was no longer the case. Aquilonna's fate changed and it would become a fortress. Now that the path to Oblivion Sea was open Emperor could turn his attention back to the true target and reason of the conflict- Akaramo.

I Flagship of the 7th Fleet ,,Gram'' I

Emperor Siegfried Von Drachenritter stood in front of a great holo-map. It displayed thousands of wars and hundreds of thousands of nations. Borders shifted as nations came and went, some of them ereased to never rise again. However, his attention was on Kantrias where the current heart of the Empire was. Loss of influence elsewhere was merely a temporary annoyance, they would retake what was lost later on. Unnecessary loss of life was a tragedy but he hoped that various new countries that he formed after shattering their masters would learn to fight without Empire to babysit them. He would return to aid them once more, but before that would happen, he would have to clean up at home. His deliberations were interrupted by arrival of the Commander of his Imperial Guard. Figure in power armour knelt and awaited his attention unmoved even when Great Wolf started licking it's helmet. Emperor grabbed Fenris by the collar and dragged him back despite his displeasure.
,,Rise, Gabriel. What is it that you wish to inform me about?''
,,We are nearing Aquilonnia, my liege. Admiral Mittermeyer successfully subjegated it and entire island is under our control with the exception of neutral Sajemi. Fighting in Zoygarian Colonies continues, but blockade is unbroken. Both sides sustained significant damage. Unfortunately, news from further reaches are not pleasing. Enemies probe defenses of our allies in our absence and assalut them hoping to break them before we return. It would seem they are aiming for Thoviador.'' he finished.
,,I am aware. I expect Thoviador to hold out, Queen Anastasia will not let herself be dethroned by those pests. I would love to see her outmaneuver them again and again, but the duty comes first. Unfortunately isolationist policy made our enemies bold. Current conflict is a direct result of that.''
,,Akaramanos.'' Captain of the Imperial Guard clenched his fist.
,,They thought themselves untouchable when they struck into the heart of our empire, thinking we wouldn't dare to strike back with Zoygarian Commonwealth as their protectors. The fools. We will avenge the fallen tenfold and leave their land in ruins, path to their homeland is open with Aquilonnia under our control and logistics secured. Terrorists, rebels, upstarts. We will give them all a message which they will heed in the only language we share with hose primitives. Violence. Examples will be made and none will dare to raise their hand against the Fatherland ever again. No nation will be beyond my reach, no enemy will be beyond my wrath.'' Emperor turned around and watched as Ashen Crusade sailed forth, Aquilonnia already visible in the distance despite the storm that raged around the fleet. One final stop before he would unleash his might on Akaramo and claim Cárcere Norulo's skull.
