The Democratic Republic of Kurdistan is a middle eastern country situated between Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the Soviet Union. It was founded by and for the Kurdish people in the National Independence War, fought against Turkish oppression from 1935 to 1940. The country's primary territory is in formerly Turkish-ruled Kurdish land, as well as the northern provinces of the formerly Iraqi-ruled Kurds. Despite the many ethnic Kurds who reside outside of the Fatherland, the government has no further territorial ambitions and instead promotes Kurdish migration to their rightful ancestral home. The country is governed as a unitary socialist presidential republic and currently led by the Great Leader, President Mazar Remman. Remman also leads the Revolutionary National Labor Front, the ruling and sole legal political party. Kurdistan has a majority-nationalized economy and considers itself associated with the Eastern Bloc, supporting global revolutionary movements and decolonization. Kurdistan's precarious regional position and systemic hostility from most of its neighbors have driven a dominant role for the Kurdish People's Army in society and politics. KPA officers have been dominant in the Kurdish political class since the Great Leader staged the Newroz Revolution in 1952. The Kurdish people have a defensive nationalist mindset, viewing their independence and progress as constantly threatened by foreign powers, particularly Europeans.
