Let it be known that Authoritarian regimes spend more on corruption, nepotism, grand palaces, and even more corruption vs flawed democracies than they do for people's welfare. If they do, they'll be looking at a revolution because people are more educated and less hungry. Hence, authoritarianism is not for the people, but rather against the people with no real benefit for the people. It's a basic application of the rules of power. You have to satisfy your court or cronies in order to keep your rule as long as possible at the expense of the people's welfare.
