Not really, NATO is not an extention of the American Empire but it sure is an ally. Very few missions that NATO undervent where done in good heart, and non of them where done in protection of NATO members (the reason the alliance was started in the first place.) Take the NATO agression over Yugoslavia, it was deemed illegal by the UN and they where advised to stop any military action against Serbia, but America brute forced it anyways.
