One more question for Chan island and Mozworld as well: The Forest Regional History dispatch hasn't been updated in over a year at this point. It's always been one of my favorite little neat things about Forest -- not many other regions keep such a record of their history. Is Mozworld still planning on updating it at some point, as a sort of "unofficial project" despite not being a RO anymore? Or is it unmaintained at this point, or being transitioned to someone else? Would hate to see it discontinued (especially since we've just experienced perhaps some of the most important developments in all of the region's history).

Wait, we're not ditching the ancient Forest tree flag are we? This is just a flag contest for Forestrians and not to replace Forest's flag, right? *nervous sweating*

I believe it's the latter. But I do hope that either it's a temporary thing, or some fairly strict parameters are put in place so that whatever new flag we end up with retains the same connection to the rest of our graphic identity.

Aww, so I was officially the first stranger you interacted with online? How charming! I am honored.

I would hope that we either retain the current flag for some things, or at least that the new flag uses elements of the existing one. I'm not opposed to new flags in themselves, but there shouldn't be too big of a jolt to something new. I've tried to do that with my own nation. Each iteration (this is the fourth or fifth, I think, and courtesy of one illustrious and much-missed Raccoon Creek, so it's probably the final version) retains elements of the older version, so the flag can be said to evolve.
So I would be voting against a red flag with volcanos and McDonald's french fry containers, just in case anyone had bizarre ideas. O_õ
Also, when was our current flag made? I forget.

I think you put this very well -- I'm in full agreement.

It would be pretty weird to just not have the three trees in our flag anymore at this point. Besides, as I've said before, the current flag is nearly vexillologically perfect imo, it's simple, memorable, easy to draw, etc.. I don't think it should be replaced. Maybe modernized a little bit, but not replaced entirey.

It is rather perfect. Even I could draw it, haha.
There might be something to making special-use flags for Forest, as would befit an old and venerable region. Maybe flag variants for the Electoral Period, Z-Day, Pride Month, a Christmas Holiday one with a wintry theme, etc. would be appropriate. There could even be a "Mourning Flag" or "Remembrance Flag" for special use during solemn occasions, like Mar. 6th for Errinundera's CTE. But as I won't be designing any of them for utter lack of theoretical and technical ability, that's my two cents.
Or it could just be Love and Nature with the mask on, haha. That was the best. :-)

Agreed with the general sentiment being expressed - I am a huge fan of the current flag, and something would need to be remarkably good to get my vote as a replacement. I would hope that should a contest be held to that end, the current flag will be included in the options to ensure it can be retained if that is the preference. Certainly I wouldn't want to see anything that changes the color scheme, which is used in all of our symbology and letterhead. I would also be more than a bit hesitant about anything more complicated than what we have, which is clear and recognizable, as is one of only a handful of regional flags amongst the largest regions that actually look like, you know, flags. Our current flag and symbol situation is exceedingly good.

As soon as someone mentioned "flag contest" I immediately started doodling some ideas, and one of them was a flag specifically designed with a winter version in mind. The three trees are green with white outlines, but then in winter they're white with green outlines.
Or, as you said, just straight up Love and Nature would work too

This is a good idea! Special flag variants for special occasions. It's a good way to show what kinds of things Forest values as a group while being fun to make, without requiring a complete rebrand or ditching of traditional elements.

I have copies of our flag in large and small versions, our diplomatic flag, the winter "snowing" gif flag, and the Z-day "storm" gif flag. Also the Crystal Jubilee Flag, the 2019 photo contest flags, and our Coat of Arms (which features the flag).

Because that's gonna be my flag for a while because I kinda lost the file with all my symbols and now I have to remake it.

I agree that our current design is iconic and that the best designs will run with that, but I don't think it's fair to limit the creativity of the entrants where your creativity when designing the current flag was not. Besides, I'm of the opinion that the flag of our region should be determined by what the people of Forest want, instead of what the people of Forest want being restricted by the existing flag of our region. I expect our residents will vote for a design that reimagines our existing iconography in a way that's both new and familiar - but I guess that's for the voters to decide!
I'm so pleased to see that people are already engaging with this event; the discussion about design ideas and the kinds of things people want to see when voting have made me even more excited than I was already! I'm told the last time we had a flag contest there were only three or four options, so I hope we see much more engagement from the community this time. There are so many talented people in our region and I can't wait to see what they come up with!
And to address the elephant in the room: of course the current flag will be included as an entry! I'd be more than happy to retain our current flag if that won a popular vote - the important thing here is that people will get a chance to choose the flag they think best defines Forest, whatever that is.

Actually 2 was the lie. I was holding on to the fact that as far as I know (I'm dum), no one calls it a "laundry machine" (please note the previous statement in parenthesis), but a washing machine instead, thus creating a believable scenario. As for the story of number 1 and 3, I'll leave it for another day, I don't want to run out of potential stories to share..

I will just say that, IMHO, the current regional flag is beautiful and it would be a shame to change it for some other design, no matter how elaborate that could be.

Government Post
My fellow Forestrians,
It is my great pleasure to introduce to you today a new project from the Research and Statistics department: The Forest Roots newsletter! Similar, perhaps, to a feature of the local newspapers in your own nations' cities, this short newsletter will read as if it was a snapshot from a time gone past. Each month, I will publish a new edition on a particularly momentous day in Forest history. Since Errinundera's absence and CTE, Forest has stepped into a new era, one filled with both uncertainty and optimism. But as each new month passes, let's take time to remember the important events that shaped Forest into the distinguished community that we know of today. For as the famed science fiction author Robert Heinlein once said, "A generation which ignores history has no past—and no future."
This month's Forest Roots newsletter is on the commendation of Forest! For our contribution to issues writing and WA proposals, loyal partnership with fellow embassy regions, and, of course, leadership in the promotion of environmental causes, Forest was awarded the badge on April 12, 2017.
In the words of Ransium, indeed

While I really do appreciate your commitment to complete freedom, my past experience with conducting flag redesigns and redesign contests suggests that it is extremely important to include some sort of quality/consistency check -- whether through a (proactive) set of design guidelines for entrants to follow, or through a (reactive) narrowing-down selection process by a group of well-informed government members. This check ensures that whatever designs are eventually voted on by the population as a whole not only have the most obvious symbolism (the sole criterion on which large populations tend to judge designs), but are also in line with basic graphic design principles and don't cause issues when used alongside the rest of the region's graphics.
I did not mean at all that any update should be limited by what the current flag is; rather, I said I hope that a process is put in place to ensure that a new design "retains the same connection to the rest of our graphic identity". Let me give you an example of what I mean by this. As long as I can remember, the "Forest shade of green" -- that dark-ish green color that you find on the WFE, in every dispatch header, etc. etc. etc., has been the green located at hex code #096309 (red 9, green 99, blue 9 in RGB). This is the color that is used everywhere to represent Forest, and in fact the current flag's green is indeed #096309. Now, if we don't tell entrants that as a rule they should use #096309 green in their design, we may end up with flags that have #00ff00 green or #09633b green or #3a6b27 green. All of those are perfectly respectable greens, but you can't deny it would be a headache (at least for those of us who make Forest graphics) to have everything one unified color... and then a single slightly different shade in the flag. The discrepancy would be nobody's fault, of course. And if we worked with the entrant to adjust the design to use the right color, or gave them the guideline beforehand, a version with #096309 green would surely look almost exactly the same and be just as good. But simply saying "let's put everyone's designs freely into a poll and let the best ones win!" eliminates the prospect of having any sort of consistency check like that.
I'm pretty sure whoever told you that is wrong! I recall several pages' worth of designs submitted on the old forums (sadly lost to the mists of history). I know I myself submitted at least three, and Bruination also submitted a whole bunch. There were quite a few other designers and submissions as well.
