The Warrior Nomads of the Heart of Africa:

In the Upemba Depression with some 50 lakes located in it, several miles from what would become known as Zambia, there lived a number of tribes with shared language & culture. The Catangi. These warrior nomads had migrated to the Congo Basin Region in the 13th century & had since then established tent settlements in these marshy grasslands where they grazed livestock nomadically. Their culture was militaristic & for centuries they’d warred one another and the other indigenous tribes of the region. However of all the Catangi tribes, one had developed separately. The Luba tribe.

See, in the early 1400s the Luba tribesmen had become traders, they traveled as far the East African coast to seek trade & it was on these trade expeditions that they converted to Islam, bringing the Abrahamic faith they’d learnt of from Persian & Arabian merchants on the Swahili coast, back with them to the Heart of Africa. Over the next hundred years, the Luba would learn to write in Arabic, would infuse Arabic words into their vocabulary & slowly develop Muslim societal structures so that by the turn of the 16th century they’d formed the Luba Sultanate.

This process of 'Islamisation' had isolated them from their Catangi cousins & their emphasis of trade over war made them seem weak to the militaristic warriors around them. Not to mention the Luba had began to settle in walled towns, a blasphemic act for the Catangi who had traditionally been nomadic. By the mid- 1500s, the other Catangi tribes would be fed up...
