INDONESIA UNVEILS HORIZON LUNAR LANDER AND ROVER, WHICH PLANS TO COLLECT SOIL SAMPLES FROM THE LUNAR SOUTH POLE

Indonesia has unveiled the Horizon Lunar Lander and Rover (HLLR), with the goal of collecting, but not returning, lunar soil samples from the South Pole of the Moon. The mission's primary goal is to test Indonesia's capability of landing on the Lunar surface in preparation for future missions to the Moon. A secondary goal is to collect Lunar soil samples from the South Pole and attempt to collect water ice. The onboard Liquid-to-Oxygen Laboratory (LOL) will then attempt to convert the water ice to liquid water, then the water to breathable oxygen. The experiment plans to prove the fact that oxygen can be generated on the Moon, which will expand the self-sufficiency of a Lunar base. The HLLR will not be testing Indonesia's lunar launch capabilities as it will be launching on a foreign launch vehicle. The Horizon lander and rover consists of the lander, which serves as the control point, relay, and sample collection device, while the rover sits on top and will take 4K HD photos from the Lunar surface, as well as conducting underground water ice deposit mapping using a downward facing infrared camera. The rover is designed to last up to 120 days on the Moon, but can last longer as most space missions do. The rover is equipped with a sample transport mechanism, an ability to pick up sample tubes from the ground, and transfer them into another vessel. This will be used in a future Horizon Lunar Sample Return (HLSR) mission, which will return the samples for study. The Indonesian government is preparing to discuss opportunities with launch providers (United Launch Alliance, SpaceX from Paramountica; Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) from Peking Zhongguo; Indian Space Agency from Nosautempopulus; Roscosmos from Victoria Harbor; European Space Agency, Arianespace from Metropolitan Francais; and JAXA from Philanialle) for a possible launch vehicle choice. The Indonesian government requests informal discussions with the aformentioned countries to discuss the launching of the Horizon lunar lander and rover mission. HLLR is currently in development by the Indonesian Space Administration, the University of Jakarta, and the Scientific Institute of Indonesia. It is set for completion in autumn 2024 and will possibly launch by late 2024 to early 2025.
