First Election Called In The Arab States

The end of the Hijri Rebellion brought a sigh of relief across the AS. The Rebellion had occurred in direct response to the ratification of the constitution and forced the postponement of the first elections. With the rebellion over, the PCC Electoral Committee has announced a plan for the elections. They will take place on December 30, giving candidates and parties roughly three months to organize and campaign. Despite the security concerns parties have been able to mobilize quickly. All offices will be elected including Senators, People’s Assemblymen, and the Presidency. The President and Arab National Congress will then be responsible for appointing the judges of the

Almost instantly the news of elections changed the political landscape. The Arab National Union was the largest party of the AFS, and groaned under its own weight. It’s largest faction were the Khalilists, but it was much more diverse than that. It encompassed Hashemite royalists, socialists, conservatives, and progressives. This created considerable strain on the party and with its main goal of arab unity realized, the party lost its unifying factor. Furthermore, with the Constitution electing Assemblymen in a multi-seat district, smaller parties had a much better chance of getting elected. Starting with Hashemite royalists, the ANU lost much of its weight. Within a few weeks, the Arab States became a very multi-party country.
