your country will increase its population as long as you are active. I think the point of the game is to realize that all decisions have upsides and downsides. It's up to you to make your nation into what you want. It can be a paradise on earth or a hell-hole.

It takes a hell of a lot of squinting to look at any old flag with a canton and declare it "like the Kriegsmarine," this one especially. No, it has nothing to do with that. The canton is the region's flag, as this is the regional founder account, and the base is my personal flag (seen flying on Imperium of Josh), supplied to me some time ago by someone in a flag exchange event, and recoloured by someone else to be enjoyably gay.
