Well, Morgoth is a deity and Sauron is of the likes of Gandalf (ie, equal in strength).

And in the Third Age (at the time of the events in the LoTR books) one can say that Gandalf was even superior to Sauron, as Sauron lost much of his might in the previous Ages and with the crafting of the power rings (and the One Ring that he lost). In the same time, one can also say that Gandalf is not superior to Sauron, at least based on his own words as quoted from The Two Towers (the White Rider chapter) and from the Istari chapter in Unfinished Tales he didn't have too much confidence in his own strength over the dark lord Sauron's strength.

Oh yes, that is correct! I was meaning to read the standalone book with the story of Beren and Luthien, but did not find it as a hardcover here where I live.

i didnt read the silmarillion but i watched some vids about morgoth
hes a valar
sauron is a maia

tho gandalf was more powerful when he became the white for when he was grey he couldn defeat the nazgul
and its easy to defeat sauron in 1v1 if u just have a big dog

Guess that's the reason why it was easy to defeat Sauron if you had a big dog. Because Sauron was a cat person! (previous discussion regarding Tevildo)

i ask myself a question. If Gandalf commanded the nazgul when he had the ring in the alternate vid of what if gandalf took teh ring then why couldnt frodo control the nazgul in the book?

I believe that this very same question was already answered by Tolkien in one of his letters, letter 246

Here is a link to some relevant parts of the document
http://www.americanidea.org/handouts/06240110.htm

The actual relevant part is around the last paragraphs, ie,

"[...] The situation as between Frodo, with the Ring and the Eight* (*the Witch-King having been reduced to impotence) might be compared to that of a small brave man armed with a devastating weapon, faced by eight savage warriors of great strength and agility armed with poisoned blades. The man’s weakness was that he did not know how to use his weapon yet [...]"

The same letter also discusses the implications of what could have happened with other ring bearers or possible ring bearers, like with Gollum or even Gandalf. A somewhat lengthy read but interesting nonetheless.

Apart the answer from Tolkien himself, discussions are still open! Most likely culprits are the power of the wielder of the ring (compare a Hobbit like Frodo vs a Maia like Gandalf) or the desire of the wielder of the ring (compare what the ring could enhance in Sauron with his domination plans and in Sam the Hobbit with his gardening dreams, who is easier to sway)

Later edit: that video with what could happen with Gandalf with the One Ring implied that Gandalf could have controlled the Nazgul directly by the use of the One Ring. That may be also up for debate, considering that Sauron actually had in his posession the 9 Nazgul rings to control them directly. So its a battle of will-of-the-mind between the One Ring under Gandalf's control on one hand (with his Maia powers he was most likely able to control lesser beings like the Nazgul), and on the other hand with the One Ring still linked to Sauron's will and command, and, as a bonus, Sauron's possession of the Nazgul rings (that they are bound to). A delicate balance that I don't know for certain about if Gandalf was powerful enough to command the Nazgul to betray Sauron just by using the One Ring on them.

I do love reading Tolkien explaining/clarifying/expounding on parts of his own world to others. It's always an enlightening experience, for me. His point about Frodo's inexperience rings (sorry) true for me. That which made he and his fellow hobbits most suitable to carry the ring, also made him least suited to use it. Both being more or less the same.

Reading correspondences between authors and/or artists was once a fond pastime of mine. However, I never did pick up any collections of Tolkien's correspondences with friends or colleagues. I feel a sudden urge to rectify that. There surely are some good collections of his out there...at the very least between himself and Lewis.

[A brief google search, before hitting post, shows me the main collection of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien is out there. However, I will continue searching to see if there are any collections of his letters between himself and only one other person]

Lindon-rivendell wrote:wait we got raided?

We were not raided, but there was some suspicious activity happening at around update time. So better safe than sorry.
Probably testing the waters for a later ocassion that I hope does not come. I enjoy the strain and stress of a normal day in Middle Earth, but raids and invasions do come with their own chit-chatter and additional stress on the residents of our fair region.

On an other side note (and this part of my message addresses all residents of our region); if there is something lengthy but worth discussing between individual nations, feel free to consider taking advantage of the direct Telegram feature. While I am not one to stand against progress in our region (in whichever form it comes), my Ent-like character side doesn't like it very much when the talk on the RMB goes on for several posts or pages that only contain small chatter that could be better suited in a peer-to-peer direct talk among nations.

Again, this is my solely my feeling and I don't control the region and we don't have any Code of Conduct to dictate conversation topics, so don't go around throwing things at me!

Hello Middle Earth! Special announcement from XKI-

Greetings from XKI! We're proud to present a special announcement regarding Chief Executive Markanite's resignation from his position, and his selection of Hakketomat as his successor. To view the full announcement, please follow the link below.

On Monday, April 3rd 2021, Chief Executive Markanite of 10000 Islands announced his decision to resign from his position, and pass the torch to Hakketomat. Hakketomat is a well-known figure in the region, having served as Executive Officer in TITO, Senior Senator, and Registrar-General, among other positions. Although we are sad to see Markanite go, he has made an excellent choice for his successor and XKI is excited to welcome Hakketomat into the position of Chief Executive.

The following is the statement of resignation and conferral from Markanite:

On the 17th February 2019, I was given one of the greatest honours in 10000 Islands and was asked by Woonsocket to serve as Chief Executive. I have loved serving in this role over the last two years but now I think it is time that I pass on the role to another.

2. The Chief Executive authority of 10000 Islands shall be vested in the Founder Nation, the United States of Grub. The Chief Executive shall hold Office for life, and shall be responsible for the conferral of the Chief Executive's authority to a successor of the Chief Executive's sole choosing.

So, as per Article 2 of the XKI Constitution, I am naming Hakketomat to be the next Chief Executive of the 10000 Islands. The transition will begin today with this announcement and I will work with to bring them up to speed on all the duties of the Chief Executive over the next few weeks. I will update everyone upon completion of the transition.

The first thing we will work on is administering the elections which begin tomorrow as normal.

I'd like to thank you all for your support, help and guidance whilst I navigated the challenges of the role. I hope that I have done you all proud. Being Chief Executive is not easy, and I know I've made some mistakes however I also hope I've done some good and helped the region. 10000 Islands has an extensive and amazing history, we have endured the test of time and will continue to thrive under the new Chief Executive.

I look forward to watching how the region evolves over the next few months and years. It has been an honour and a privilege. Thank you all.

Long live the 10000 Islands! Long live TITO! Long live Hakketomat!

Mark

As the transition process begins we wish Hakketomat the best of luck and express the deepest gratitude to Markanite for his dedication and service to the region.

Thank you very much for your update, Jedinsto iii xki emissary!

Markanite was always helpful, as we had quite a few of discussions in the past. A great player and person to fill the role of Chief Executive. While I do not personally know Hakketomat, I see only the best of things written about the nation from the players that had the pleasure of interacting and we hope to continue our inter-regional relations in the same positive trend under this new guidance!

I was not aware of these, and I thank you. Those should be fun to check out. For some reason, I have an idea in my head of what he sounds like, so it should be interesting to see how it aligns to the reality.

Why don’t others from our region join the rp so far ther are only 5 members only 3 from middle earth(you and dunland and me)

Not a lot of people are interested in roleplays, and many more might be interested but are not familiar with roleplays. For some it involves an engagement and responsibility and maybe they even are a bit shy and don't want to make a fool of themselves in front of others with more experience in RPs. And some may just need a gentle push.

Either way, on the roleplay I prepared last year I advocated for it for a few months and even then we managed to find a few able volunteers that went through the excruciating pain of what was that RP! So while our region is a good place to start to find players for in-theme roleplay, you should also post on the Tolkien RP Group on the NS forums (located here viewtopic.php?f=31&t=325671 ) and you may even consider sending a few TGs to some proeminent players from the forum that were engaged in other similar RPs.
