Likewise; I have pretty much zero knowledge of sports.

Novo Wagondia wrote:As I start planning for a potential EOA Olympics this summer, I wanted to gauge who was interested in participating, and who would be willing to submit a bid for host city. Keep in mind that it is mostly a ceremonial distinction: while I plan for the host to have some perks in athlete performance (which I will explain later), I will take charge of all the tedious matchmaking and posting of results. If there is enough interest in going forward with this project, I can potentially have a host city application up later today or tomorrow.

For me, same as Oceara and Cybus. A human team would be sent, by my knowledge of sports is unfortunately lacking too much to be able to roleplay it.

Add me to the list of those interested in the EOA Olympics but have a lack of knowledge regarding sports.

Don't worry about having to roleplay for the games; it's more for the joy of international competition than a hardcore sporting experience. Many of the sports, like for example gymnastics, archery, or equestrian, are more forms of art and performance than they are massive, multi-billion dollar sports empires like the NFL or whatnot. As someone who has personally been interested in the Olympics my whole life, I have technical knowledge of almost none of the sports, and find myself much more attracted to the symbolism of the games, their significance for national prestige, and of course the virtuosity of the athletes mastering their respective crafts.

A second group of aircraft from the carrier would arrive to reinforce the patrol at distance, the Air patrol flight's leader would report back to the carrier that the Destroyer had been inspecting the wreckage and had now just barely changed posture to battle stations.

The Carrier Captain, taking in this information would make the decision to hail the Destroyer sooner than planned. (He wanted to get four flights in the area to circle from all sides as an aerial cordon to dissuade an escape attempt.. So now he'll settle with not revealing his flights yet beyond merely indicating that he has aircraft that can see the Destroyer to give the Destroyer captain uncertainty as to if an aerial Cordon is already in place or not with the insinuation that a cordon is already in place.)

"This is West Africa Confederate Navy Patrol 2, our air patrols have reported a probable torpedoing of one of our civilian vessels by your vessel. We furthermore have positive confirmation of your battle stations stance. We have orders to quarantine your vessel from a distance pending negotiations between our governments to ensure that no further threat from your vessel can be posed to our civilians in the region, we ask you stand down your weapons and maintain your current position." (Patrol 2 has been a reused designation for each time we've deployed a carrier out to patrol the Gulf since the cold war)

Thorseus would simply hang up in Sangere's face, not even bothering to respond. He disconnected his phone to prevent further calls, laid his head down on the desk and quickly passed out.

Back in the Gulf of Guinea, a cargo ship that had been in the vicinity of the fishing trawler saw the explosion on the horizon, and the crew promptly informed the coast guard and the shore authorities of the incident and the sighting of Malian warships. The Imperial Navy and the coast guard has been alerted, and dozens of ships are en route to our location. We will not stand down, and should you engage in hostile actions against us, we will have no choice but to retaliate."

I'm currently in the midst of working on my factbook going into detail about the Skedar and I've decided that the original form of Jaalism (a Skedorian religion) will be based heavily on the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians (with minor inspiration from other sources, like Orsonian Paganism as talked about by Orson some weeks back). I feel like this is not only easier to work with, but makes a lot of sense regarding how the religion was like before being changed drastically into what it was in modern times...Anyway, whenever I finish the factbook I'll make sure to share it here for you guys to read.

August 5 2021 Edit- Changed New Guinea and India populations.

Australia: Orsonians have been terraforming the Australian continent for well over 10,000 years, with the goal of taming the vast, harsh deserts of the Outback in one of the oldest multigenerational projects in history. The fear of the fields and forests returning to sand was so great that it became religious in scope, with the worship of the Life Force and a deep respect for the environment originating from this. The efforts were so successful that much of Australia is covered by the bush or grasslands, and the deserts have shrunk significantly in size. As a result, in 2020 Australia had a population of 150,000,000, compared to roughly 26,000,000 in the real world.

New Guinea: In real life, New Guinea is world's second largest island, with most people living in small communities based on agriculture (it is the most rural nation in the world); it is among the most culturally diverse nations in the world, and has numerous uncontacted tribes. In the EOA universe, none of this is true (except for the island's size), and is actually the complete opposite. Large bands of Orsonians began migrating into New Guinea around 6,000 BC, engaging in significant conflicts with the human indigenous population. The Orsonians eventually arrived in enough numbers to displace ancient civilizations surrounding the New Guinea Highlands (the areas near the island's central mountain range), which had developed an advanced agricultural society. Crops like sugarcane, bananas, sago, and yams were first domesticated in the Highlands by these people, which the Orsonians later learned how to cultivate and trade in Australia and other areas of the world. Orsonians ultimately assumed control over most of the island, with the indigenous people either remaining in the minority or fleeing into the Indonesian isles or the Philippines. Today, New Guinea is highly-developed and industrialized, with large cities dotting the coastlines and interior. The territory has a population of 45,000,000 (compared to 11,000,000 in real life)- around 90% of them are biological Orsonians.

India: A major one. The Orson Empire has been involved in the Indian subcontinent for over 900 years, and the region is almost unrecognizable from its real life counterpart. To start, there is no concept of a unified India or Indian people. One might view themselves as Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, etc. or identify with religion, but never as an Indian. Additionally, there are significant biological Orsonian communities within India (primarily in the southern and eastern regions) due to colonization. This is due to centuries of efforts by Orsonian nobility and landowners to keep the population divided, preventing them from uniting as a single cohesive unit and overthrowing the Orsonian occupiers. India is divided into multiple different regions, each with their own governments also for this reason. People usually speak the Standard Dialect in formal or business situations, but use their local languages for everything else. India in modern times is fairly industrialized, and this shows in its demographics; the entire subcontinent (minus Pakistan) has a population of about 850,000,000, compared to 1.3 billion in real life. Another reason for this is the fact that Orsonians heavily exploited and controlled Indians, murdering millions of them in deliberate genocides, plundering their civilizations for wealth, and forcing the vast majority of the population into slavery or serfdom. India in general is a world of its own, often considered a "nation within a nation" by most people in Orson, and it has its own internal issues and conflicts separate from the wider country (with the Ever Victorious Army being a great example).

Sub-Saharan Africa: This region is infamous for its absolute poverty, immense instability, and dictatorial regimes in the real world, with conflicts such as the Rwandan Genocide and the Second Congo War resulting in many millions of deaths. The trope has been completely inverted in the EOA universe, with many Orsonian Africans enjoying a life comparable to the first world. The Congo region is a great example, with the Orsonian Congo possessing the highest standards of living within Orson, profiting immensely off of its mineral wealth. The Free City of Kinshasa potentially surpasses New York City in GDP, and has long been recognized as one of Orson's economic engines. While the region has definitely suffered from infighting (such as during the Second Civil War) and continued low-intensity insurrections, the situation is nowhere near as horrifying as in reality.

European Colonization: Unlike reality, no European power was successful in colonizing either large parts or the entirety of Orson. The Empire has remained a powerhouse for most of its history, and remained technologically on par with Europe unlike Qing China, Mughal India, or the Ottoman Empire. By the time a colonization rush could begin, the feudal period of Orson had come to an end, and the reforms first introduced by Emperor Garan Arkenson heavily centralized power and instituted absolute rule; this prevented the Europeans from taking advantage of a disgruntled noble or internal rebellion to gain influence, as they did in many RL instances. The spice trade, for example, remained tightly controlled by the Orsonians, and any power that attempted to seize control of the Indonesian Spice Islands would be met with the full might of the Imperial Navy and permanently banned from the region. The Orsonians did allow Europeans to establish minor trading posts and some towns, but they had to pay large fees for this privileges, comply with strict rules, and were monitored constantly by Imperial troops; the Portuguese state of Goa in India and Cape Town in South Africa are two examples. Emperor Garan notably had heard reports of the horrors the Spanish and Portuguese inflicted in the Americas against the native civilizations, and thus especially did not trust them; all settlements were advised to use extreme caution when dealing with them.

Wonderful job putting this together, Orson! In my mind this clarifies many of the open questions I had about the Orsonian world, especially regarding Australasia. Papua New Guinea would be about as densely populated as Japan, which is astonishing to me!

I got my thesis defense done! I have now have history honors conferred upon me, successfully defending my undergrad thesis “”Machine-age Barbarism”: Contextualizing H.P Lovecraft’s Views on Science in the 1920s”.

Congratulations, Cybus! It's a hard-fought accomplishment and I hope you take the day to celebrate.

Sadly, I’m plunging right back into final projects, but I did have a celebratory French macron and a snickerdoodle.

I see you're a man of excellent taste; snickerdoodles and macrons are some of the best desserts out there. I also love molasses cookies, but they must be a Southern thing because shockingly few people I've met in college have ever heard of them.

I'd like to formally present the RMB application form for the 2021 EOA Summer Olympics Games, and invite each of you to nominate one of your cities for the privileged position of host. For simplicity's sake, many of the details surrounding the games themselves (for example, scheduling and venue selection) has been left out, and instead will be worked out with my assistance after a final host has been chosen. I aim to keep the application window open until Sunday, May 9th, to allow everybody ample time to fill out the form before the selection vote commences. Good luck all!

(Optional) Please give a short one-paragraph statement, outlining your nation's case for hosting the Olympics, and how the games will affect your city's long-term vision for the future:

The Orson Empire wrote:Thorseus would simply hang up in Sangere's face, not even bothering to respond.

Already, local news networks in Nigeria were reporting on the story, sensationalizing it as a potential Malian attack, and civilians were quickly becoming alarmed at the news. The captain of the destroyer ordered the sailors to remain at their battlestations, and the following reply was sent:

"This is Captain Angar of the OSS Tardan. I report that no such torpedo was ever fired from this warship, nor did we take any other aggressive action. We identified the civilian vessel immediately as a Malians trawler, broke off our piracy investigation, and then an unexplained incident on the trawler resulted in an explosion. The Imperial Navy and the coast guard has been alerted, and dozens of ships are en route to our location. We will not stand down, and should you engage in hostile actions against us, we will have no choice but to retaliate."

With little other hope of getting the attention of the higher ups in the Empire before it's too late, Prime Minister Sangare would grasp his head. Quickly he would receive another call by the Chief of the Navy, notifying him that the Imperial Destroyer claims non-responsibility and confusion regarding the explosion of the trawler.. But that the Imperial Navy is mobilizing for a possible battle. Willing to try anything to avoid a battle, Sangare would speak up "Get me a direct line to Patrol 2." "are you sure it's best for you to be issuing direct orders instead of your trained staff?" would reply the Chief of the Navy to which Sangare lacking patience would snap back with "Just do it!"

The Captain of the Carrier would be awaiting further orders from the Mainland as the Phone rings, he would answer expecting the higher ups in the navy "Orders?" -- Out of the phone would come out the Voice of Prime Minister Sangare much to the Captain's shock. "Halt all of your ships immediately and hail the Destroyer again and put the phone to the radio." Stunned the captain would shout out orders for maximum possible deceleration of all ships and would order for the radio operator to establish radio contact with the Tardan as he brings the phone over to the radio.

"Captain Angar of the Tardan. This is Prime Minister Oumar Sangare, I have been unable to contact Prime Minister Vania and Emperor Thorseus refuses to negotiate. It is clear that the military apparatuses are moving too quickly for a slower method of diplomacy such as by the Ambassador or the UCP Representative. I am intervening to implore you to relay our concerns for the situation and our desire to establish contact with Prime Minister Vania as quickly as possible to your superiors up the chain of Command, I have issued an order for this carrier patrol to come to a halt as quickly as technologically feasible. The longer the other Imperial ships spend converging the higher the risk of miscommunication leading to weapons fire before we can get time to figure out what the hell is going on here."

News in the confederation would start covering the explosion, although they have not speculated yet on it's nature and have added the detail that a number of Confederate military units have entered into a Heightened State of Alert.

What would be the IC reactions if in the 1980s the Confederation introduced Nuclear Thermal Rocket technology to increase the thrust provided by their Military's jet engines for the same amount of fuel?

I am thinking that these engines would be mostly used by Naval Aviation(Which is limited by carriers' capacity anyway so quality over quantity is more convincing there), Long range bombers, and for tanker aircraft. With the most important being the tankers and bombers as the increased fuel efficiency means increased range -- especially for the tankers.

We’d be impressed that you created it, but there wouldn’t be an especially notable reaction. Imperial sensors are still by far the most advanced on the planet, and our fighters could easily locate, intercept, and shoot down any bomber or tanker long before it approached Imperial territory, so we wouldn’t be particularly concerned about it impacting the balance of power in the event of war.

The Imperial government would be very concerned about the possibility of a nuclear accident and the spread of radioactive material in the environment, which could potentially trigger a UCP crisis. The Imperial Military is less concerned however, as advanced laser and railgun point-defense systems alongside hypersonic missiles are under development at this time, which would be poised to make aircraft obsolete in warfare (the first would actually be deployed in the Second Civil War). Nevertheless, I could see the Orsonians still developing their own version of the technology in reaction.

Somehow I missed the word nuclear in there.
Yes, we’d also be highly concerned about the risk of radioactive contamination of the environment.

Cybus1 wrote:Excellent work Orson! Very detailed, covering centuries, but also offering a tour of the city. Fantastic work!

I have to echo Cybus; reading this overview has really been a treat. I get the sense that much of Orsonian history has been mirrored in the growth of Aturo City, from its role in industrialization and the Orsonian renaissance to the more recent Aturoist ideology. Obviously an empire as extensive as the Orsonian realm would have substantial regional variation, and it's fascinating to see how each of those regions has impacted the broader discourse on what it means to be Orsonian.

Which name do you think sounds best for a pre-Alex dynasty of Cybusian emperors? I’m thinking pre-Rebelllion Alex created Arcadia (which I may want to rename? Ideas?) and the Evolved and then left for several centuries (or longer) to continue cavorting with Elizabeth Green. Arcadian culture would develop in the meantime (noble titles, communal palaces, keftas, Mercerist customs, etc).
The last emperor would be consumed by Alex upon his return as a “reward” for loyal service and he would rule until the Rebellion and his death (and then his rebirth and re-assumption of the throne). The emperor family would be badly hurt by the Rebellion, but they’d ultimately end up surviving, at least in part.
The emperor’s descendants would ultimately survive into the present day as extremely prominent nobles. Perhaps running a prominent corporation? Or maybe something else?

A few names I’ve considered;
Yuvchenko
Rakovsky
Cherkovsky
Tereshkova

Thoughts?

I like the idea! I've always admired Orson's various dynasties, and I would love to see something similar in the Cybusian Empire. I might go with a slightly more ancient-sounding name, maybe something loosely inspired by Egyptian or Mesopotamian. It's likely that the Cybusian language would have been fairly different so long ago not unlike Shakespeare's English, and perhaps with fewer influences from Russia and Germany. Maybe it's just me, but I've always associated Central and Eastern European surnames with Cybusian industry and innovation (Kosarek, Koenig, Eichhorst, etc), so taking it in a different direction might just as well symbolize tradition, orthodoxy, and faith.

Just a couple that I've found from name generators online:

House of Marsippar
House of Ayartetu
House of Irrar
House of Gades
House of Rusucurru
House of Hasdrubal
