First of all, welcome to the Union of Democratic States! If you're reading this, you're probably wondering what is there to do here. Look no further - here's a guide to properly help you on your way.
To get you oriented, NationStates is an political simulator dating back to 2003, with its most popular focus revolving around issues. Issues are dilemmas that a nation's leader has to resolve. Issues can range a variety of topics, with each issue having multiple decisions that affect a nation in a different way. Answering issues will change many parts of a nation's description, classification, policies, budget, and other characteristics. Most players focus on answering issues and developing their nation.
However, NationStates has much more to do beyond issues! Some more general things to explore are participating in the World Assembly (NationStates' version of the United Nations), roleplaying out scenarios with other nations, militarily invading regions/preventing such invasions, writing issues for other players, and more. There is a lot you can explore and do in NationStates. If you wish to know more about NationStates and what it has to offer you, feel free to read this guide by regional friend Amerion to learn more!
What is the Union of Democratic States?
So now that we've showed you what Nationstates is… what is the Union of Democratic States? Simply put, the Union of Democratic States (UDS) is a region located within NationStates. It's best to think of "regions" as guilds or clans that you would see in other games. The Union of Democratic States is a User-Created Region, meaning we are a community and region built from the ground up by players like you. Every region in NationStates has unique initiatives to offer, and UDS is no exception. We're proud to be a region that offers many ways for our community members to enjoy NationStates in a variety of ways from cultural events to roleplaying to our democratic regional government.
Regarding our regional government, one thing should be mentioned: the Union's government does not dictate on the national policies of its members, but merely prescribes regional law to preserve our region and seek its betterment. In other words - the Union will not disrupt your nation. In addition, non-democratic states are welcome to join the UDS - don't let our name fool you! We wish for everyone to become involved in our region, regardless of their nation type.

Awesome to hear! There's a whole lot to do in the Union, and we're excited that you're as hyped as we are!
To get involved, we heavily suggest completing these three primary steps in the following order:
Join the World Assembly and endorse World Assembly Delegate The Glorious Hypetrain.
Doing this improves our regional security and increases your nation's influence in our region and the world!
- Join our main Discord OR introduce yourself on our Regional Message Board (RMB).
Joining our social platforms is a great way to interact with our community and seek answers to your questions!
Becoming a Citizen grants you various perks - most notably the right to vote in regional elections! Most applications are accepted in 2-3 days.

Roleplay!
If you'd like to actually interact with other nations, rather than just dealing with NPC nations through your issues - then our roleplays may be a great place for you to explore!
We currently have two separate roleplay Discord servers, where our primary roleplaying occurs:
- Our "realistic" roleplay Discord server, which is more focused on re-enacting world history with some slight (i.e. actually massive) changes. If you want to roleplay your nation in a more modern setting, feel free to check this server out! (Click here to learn more!)
- Our Apocalyptic Fiefdom roleplay Discord server, which is more focused on having nations deal with an Earth that has seen the end of modern human civilization. If you fancy rebuilding a striken world, check this server out!
Additionally, if you don't feel like joining our Discord roleplays, you can always join our fellow Unionists roleplaying on the Regional Message Board, although it should be noted our RMB RP has no real ruleset or organization. But it can still be a quite fun place to be if you're just looking to interact with nations on a more casual level! Beyond our awesome RMB RP, you can also apply for a spot on our regional map.
Note: You do not need Citizenship to participate in our roleplays.
Run your own region-sponsored project!
Some people often like holding events for those around them - whether they be game nights or contests to larger things like Soccer World Cups or festivals with hundreds of people. Others may have never ran an event or project in their life, but now they have some really cool idea they'd like to see implemented somewhere.
If that sounds like you in relation to our region, why not give participating in our Ministry of Culture a go? Our Ministry of Culture can help you set up whatever you are thinking of and promote it to the rest of the region!

Serve in the regional army!
In NationStates, therein exists a minigame called "Raiding/Defending", wherein nations will essentially try taking over regions (raiders) or preventing said raiders from doing so (defenders). The Union is proud to present the Union of Democratic States Armed Forces as a Defender military with aims to protect the world from preying invaders.
If you like extensively fast-paced gameplay, a large amount of skills/techniques to master, progression up the ranks, and tight social camadrie with those around you - it may be worth a shot joining the UDSAF.

Legislate regional law!
The Union is home to a small yet comprehensive body of law upheld by various legal principles and schools of legal thought. That is to say... if you like reading legislation, love to discuss ideas that have an impact, or perhaps even writing your own laws, then being in the Council may be a great place to start!

Scheduled elections took place in July for the positions of Senator for Himes West (roleplay) and Senator for Lyonnesse East (houses).
Wille-Harlia of TCP defeated Krystalveil of WIP with 40 votes to 20 to become Senator of Himes West.
Free Las Pinas (MSPP), Thedairos (TCP), and Haivon (WIP) all entered the first race for Lyonnesse East with the conclusion resulting in a runoff between Thedairos and Free Las Pinas as no candidate reached a 50% majority of votes. The ensuing run-off resulted in a tie that then triggered a vote by the Council of Nine to select the new senator, all of this culminating to the election of Thedairos as Senator of Lyonnesse East.
XKI thanks Marxist germany and The United Royal Islands of Euramathania for their previous service. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the other candidates.
~ July saw the transition of the Culture Office over to now Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia after HumanSanity's resignation following the end of the XKI Summer Olympics.
~ HumanSanity didn't go far though, as he was appointed by Chief Executive Markanite to serve as the first President of the XKI Cards Co-op.
~ As the Co-op President, HumanSanity gained Free Las Pinas and HN67 as Cards Co-op administrators to help oversee the new venture.
~ Free Las Pinas was also brought on as Casino Shift Manager with last month's Casino revitalization and as Deputy Senator for Lyonesse East following the election of Thedairos
~ Senator Grea Kriopia brought on Wischland as Deputy for Blue Canaria North to aid in the creation of this report.
~ Delegate Kuriko hired Ignis cinere onto the TIBOE team as an official endorser to help boost and maintain endorsements.
~ The evergrowing FA team saw HumanSanity made emissary to Founderless.
~ Our Minister of Education The tasmanian islands sought a new Deputy after the election of Wille-Harlia and hired Pacifical.
~ Senator Wille-Harlia also hired Central Russia and Margaux as Deputies for Himes West.
~ Wille-Harlia was named Rookie of the Quarter for his exceptional work as a TITO member, Recruiter, and Deputy Minister of Education, among other positions, as well as his outstanding contributions to the forum and A Taco Archipelago's RMB. Congratulations Wille-Harlia!
~ Islanders enjoyed a multitude of potato-based dishes alongside residents of Spiritus, at a Potato Potluck celebration of Kuriko and The Salaxans' achievements as WA Secretary-General and Vice Secretary-General. All participants are several potato recipes richer, with a few even being lucky enough to receive Kuriko and The Salaxalans trading cards.
~ The XKI Card Co-op is making good progress under the guidance of Cards Co-op President HumanSanity, with plans for a transfer card-sharing system and a mentorship program. The hard work of Co-op members has already facilitated the card rewards for several of this month's events.
~ July's Featured Nation was Free Las Pinas, whose exceptionally high activity in XKI, alongside their work as an Ambassador, TITO member, and Recruiter makes them more than deserving of this honor. Keep up the good work!
~ Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia gave Islanders a chance to express what real-world sights reminded them of NationStates in a Photography Competition. Congratulations to Wischland for her 1st place Miniatur Wunderland photo, Wille-Harlia for his tasty 2nd place S'more photo, and Eastern New England for their charming Honorable Mention coastal photo.
~At the end of the month, Hakketomat announced XKI's first-ever TacoVision! Inspired by Eurovision, over a dozen eager nations have already submitted songs. Voting begins early August, so be on the look-out for the competition's results in next month's report.
A July regional poll by Jabberwocky forced Islanders to pick a superpower, but clearly all of the disastrous time travel movie plots did not deter many.

This month's edition features an interview with one of the newest elected Senators in XKI, Wille-Harlia, on their time in XKI and future plans for roleplay in the region. Aside from their senate seat, WH also serves as an Emissary, Cultural Office Assistant, Deputy Cartographer, and TITO Member.
GK: Let's start with some of your time here. Being a more recent addition to the Islands, could you talk a bit about what attracted you to XKI?
WH: First, the recruitment telegram I received seemed the most sincere of all of them, and offered the most things. Once I got to XKI, the warm welcome I received was amazing, and no question was stupid. The same thing on the forum and the Discord. Then, when I got into some jobs where I could show my thanks, I knew I would stay for good.
GK: Since you mentioned you liked the variety of things XKI offered, have you developed any favorite activities/hobbies in your time here?
WH: There are some hobbies I have here in XKI. One is RPing in ATA with all the other regular ATAers. One hobby I used to have was refreshing to the Job Opportunities page every day for new jobs I’d be interested in. But I don’t really do that anymore now as I have enough jobs. I will also occasionally Debate in the politics section of the Discord, and I also play in the XKI Minecraft server.
GK: Speaking of hard work, you recently faced your first ever election in XKI, how do you feel now looking back at it?
WH: I was recently elected the Himes West Senator, in charge of RP. Looking back on that campaign, I think I did everything right, but I didn’t even use half of my paid advertisements. I think that once I took an early 15 vote lead, I had it won, but there was still good competition from Krystalveil, as we had very similar platforms.
GK: Could you outline some of your goals for the future of RP in XKI?
WH: I have two goals for XKI RP. The first is to improve the quality of RP in the XKI RP region of A Taco Archipelago. The second is to revive the forum and Discord RP.
GK: Big goals! Are there any future projects you can tease our readers about in regards to RP?
WH: On the Discord, I can tease an Insanity RP event, on the forum, a medieval and a WW3 event, and in ATA, a whole plethora of events that will make up an RP event with a common enemy for all.
GK: Very interesting, what are you most excited for in the future of RP?
WH: I am most excited to see the results of my attempts!
GK: For sure. Lastly, what do you think the biggest challenge will be in regards to your work in RP?
WH: This a challenge that will take thinking to overcome: How to get the game side RPers on the forum and Discord.
