Before the starting of the campaign declaration period for the general election, I would like to declare my candidacy for the Thaecian Senate under the banner of the National Movement party. It may have been a disgrace to all of you when I resign from the House of Commons and leave Thaecia in a disrespectful and heartbroken manner before, but I have decided to be a man and take risks and criticism not too seriously or personally.

I declare my intention to run for a third term in the House of Commons! I believe I have been an active and able Member of Parliament and I wish to continue my service to the region! I will be releasing my campaign factbook within the next couple of days.

I literally wrote that fact in an email today at work as a random fact of the day.

I won't be running for a 3rd term in a row. As much as I liked being in the House, I think I need a break now, so I will be taking one after the term ends

New Thaecia Now!

Foreword

Over the past few months, I've watched as our great region has slid into decline. The death of party politics, initially heralded as a crowning achievement that would elevate its political discourse, instead led the region astray. Now the bland and inoffensive triumphs over the bold and spirited, often with pitiful amounts of votes and little enthusiasm to try new things. That's why I've decided to resist this backsliding by forming New Thaecia Now.

-Rhyssua

Who Are We?

New Thaecia Now is a catch-all, populist party dedicated to increasing regional activity and engagement, both in politics and culture. Everything we support, everything we stand for is designed to make the region more interesting, our elections more competitive, and just plain fun.

Domestic Policy

-We support decreasing the House. Seriously this should be a no-brainer. Right now, MPs are being elected with only 2 votes. Combined with the astounding number of low-effort, "safe" candidacies, this makes our elections uncompetitive and uninteresting. Should the House be decreased to 11, the Senate should similarly be decreased to 7, in order to preserve the distinction between the chambers.

-We support the increased presence of RP legislation in congress. The vast majority of bills presented today are either amended versions of existing laws, useless bureaucracy, or covering the minutiae of Thaecian law. While some of these bills can be important, they certainly aren't interesting to debate if the legislature's rmbs are any indication. While we of course support the passage of the Yogurt Viscosity Act, creative RP legislation has the potential to spark engaging debate and make being a legislator more than just busywork.

-We support the concept of RP Dependence. Many months ago, an RP independence movement cut it off from the rest of the region. The dispute, principally due to the Reformist debacle, ended long ago. By treating the RP as something tangential rather than integral to the region, activity and enthusiasm in the RP is lowered. An increased RP presence in the region can also help bolster recruitment and engagement for the region. To that end, New Thaecia Now proposes creating a nationstates forum roleplay. While the format is a bit unwieldy, a Thaecia-only thread on the forums can generate much-needed visibility for the RP and the region as a whole.

-An active, visible Culture Ministry is essential to our regional identity and promoting activity. The Ministry as a whole is a sleeping giant, with the power to invigorate the community. It should remain a Ministry, and should be staffed with active, capable people. With public consultation, the Ministry can revive Thaecian culture.

Foreign Policy

-Overall, New Thaecia Now leans globalist. While our government should of course prioritize the needs and desires of Thaecians, we've come a long way since our scrappy youth. Cooperation with other regions on events such as Paradoxical, joint military operations, and even the World Assembly all enhance Thaecia's reputation on nationstates. Furthermore, it provides opportunities for Thaecians to get involved in the region and the game as a whole, convincing them to remain active.

-We wholeheartedly support the Thaempirial Army. It's popular, a lot of fun for the people involved, and sets Thaecia apart from other UCRs in terms of recruitment. Past incidents are nothing more than growing pains in a new part of Thaecia, and will improve as time goes on. New Thaecia Now believes the Thaempirial Army should remain independent, however, and it should not conduct operations during elections.

-While the WA-wide recruitment telegrams had an undeniably positive effect on our growth as a region, future "tg nukes" could decimate our foreign relations. However, there is an alternative. Manual recruitment is very promising, and easy for all citizens to do with a few simple instructions and a format to copy. New Thaecia Now will encourage all Thaecians to manually recruit, and supports it as an alternative to more damaging methods.

Legal Policy

-Our judicial branch is in need of some drastic reform. We need active, capable justices who understand our constitution and legal code to replace those retiring.

-The court procedures were created with the best of intentions, but they need a serious rework to fix redundancies and make it an easier read. Furthermore, at least parts of the procedures should have some basis in actual law (such as the legal definitions/limits of pleas and some guide for punishments). Once in congress, NTN intends to pass a law containing this in addition to broad definitions of civil and criminal suits, designed to operate alongside the new legal code currently making its way through the legislature.

-Furthermore, the next court should undo several unwritten precedents that slow the branch and hurt the region. These include: only proceeding with one case at a time (even if that one case is moving far too slowly), rejecting cases based on authority to file (which will jointly be addressed in the above bill), not moving on cases based on a vacancy in the court (should the case be urgent, it needs to be addressed, even if the Court only stands at two justices).

-Lastly, a constitutional amendment setting a six-month term limit for justices could ensure that their performance is held to a high standard by the legislature. At the end of a Justice's term, they should have to face reconfirmation, allowing the legislature to hold them accountable without using the unwieldy device of impeachment.

-NTN believes that the constitution should include a preamble to state the document's goals, and believes the constitution itself is in need of a drastic overhaul to fix inconsistencies and poorly-thought out procedures.

Party Charter

-All members of New Thaecia Now will be equal partners within the party.

-Once a month, there will be an election for Chairman of the Party. The Chairman shall be the main party organizer, holding primary elections, organizing campaigns, and developing strategy.

-Once a month, there will be an election for Premier of the Party. The Premier is the ideological leader of the party, who is responsible for getting the New Thaecia Now agenda enacted by the region and recruiting new members.

-Any changes to the Party Charter must be approved by two-thirds of members.

Introducing the Thaecian Conservative Union!

This is a new party to uphold and stand for Thaecon beliefs in the region and was created to fill in the void left by TF when it was disbanded. Link to our manifesto is below!

Discord server is a work in progress

Mission Statement
Our goal is to uphold Thaecia’s long standing regional beliefs and to revive the focus on regional politics where we can return to our best days as a region. We stand with the idea of bringing back friendly party rivalries in the region where we can bolster regional politics once again.
Domestic Policy
  • Opposition to Direct Democracy - The Freedom Party of Thaecia stands in opposition to the implementation and ratification of direct democracy. We believe that direct democracy is a heavily flawed system and that our current system enables everyone, including newcomers, the opportunity to get involved in Thaecian politics.

  • Pro-Bicameralism - We support having two chambers of Congress, a Senate and a House. We deeply oppose the introduction of a citizen's chamber as our bicameral structure has served effectively for years and is the root of Thaecian political activity.

  • Opposition to Judicial Terms - We stand in opposition to the currently established judicial terms, as the party believes they will contribute more to the politicization of the High Court. The party believes that the only means to remove justices should be impeachment, and this mean must rely on adequate justification.

  • Creation of a Security Council - The party supports the creation of a Security Council, which would be tasked with keeping the region safe from foreign or internal infiltrators through their influence gained from endorsements and will largely have an administrative role than one that creates or enacts policy.

  • Congressional Internships - We support the creation of Congressional Internships, which will increase citizen involvement and interest in our legislative branch and law making process. It can also help new citizens get involved in Thaecia and possibly run for Congress in future elections.

Foreign Policy
  • Regional Military - The party advocates for full autonomy of the regional military, so long as it remains uninvolved with griefing and other harmful practices for foreign regional communities. We further believe that the military should remain transparent to at least one chamber of congress, and it should avoid conducting operations in the midst of Midterm and General Elections.
Inter-regional Relations- The Freedom Party of Thaecia stands for the region's neutrality in the world stage, not taking any stances in the isolationism vs globalism dispute, however always ensuring the region's best interests take priority in decisions regarding foreign affairs.
Inter-regional Organisations - The Freedom Party of Thaecia stands in opposition to memberships in Inter-regional organisations which require Thaecia to give up any regional autonomy, however is open to the idea of membership in other organisations, provided membership is determined through democratic means. The Party also strongly believes Thaecia should cooperate with other regions in game-wide events, such as N-Day.
Foreign Embassies - We believe Thaecia should continue to build embassies with big regions for the benefit of our standing in the international community. Our party also believes in the maintence of relations with smaller friendly regions, however we tend to support discord embassies exclusively for those.
Recruitment Policy - Our party stands in support for all viable means of recruitment, so as to ensure Thaecia's community continues to grow. This includes: manual recruitment, stamp recruitment, and API.

Party Constitution

  1. All citizens of Thaecia are allowed to apply for membership in the Freedom Party of Thaecia. The FREE Council, with a simple majority vote, with approval by the Party Chair, may evict a member at any time.

  2. The Freedom Party of Thaecia shall be led by a Party Chair, who is responsible for organising and managing the party on a regular basis. They shall be the lead campaign manager for the party and is responsible for all elections within the party. The Party Chair has the right to appoint Department Chairs to assist party management. The Party Chair position shall be up for election every 4 months.

  3. There shall be a FREE Council, which consists of 5 members. The Council shall be elected every 4 months and is tasked with approving party manifesto and party constitution changes, evicting members of the party, and any other purpose given to the committee not defined by this constitution. the Party Chair is also eligible to serve on the FREE Council.

  4. All changes to the Party Constitution must be approved by 2/3rds majority of the FREE Council.

Why are there so many more parties in the region? Do what you want, fine, but really, parties in Thaecia and on NS in general, don’t work.

First of all, we have an active, voting core of members of around 50-70 nations. That is nowhere near big enough for parties to be brought in. Parties split the region up, making people vote for the party, not the candidate. And while this might be the case IRL, NS governments do significantly less work, and so the topics are more specific. Parties are made on the basis of having a group of like-minded people, but when there isn’t much to debate about, because there is less for the government to do, the less necessary it becomes to have parties.

Our political system relies on electing good candidates, meaning that voters should focus on voting for a good candidate rather than a candidate from a certain party. We don’t need this. We don’t need less qualified and effective candidates elected because they have the support of a party. We need the right candidates elected because they bring the right things to their position.

And also, party manifestos are very specific, meaning that candidates can’t really write up much more into their manifestos. If you are a new member of the region and you have half your campaign already written for you, then are you going to learn anything about how the region works?

Sorry if this is a bit ranty and if parts don’t make sense, it’s just that I believe that parties limit the ability of candidates to put forward their own beliefs and as shown by our past with a key reliance on political parties, they can slow down the progression of the government. I really don’t see the point to this, but please remember that this is my opinion and if you really want to join or start a party, feel free so because you have a right to.

You missed the last few months of Thaecian politics, which underscored the need for some major change in the region. Independents were elected left and right, often with pathetic amounts of votes (2 in many cases...). Once in office, many politicians proceeded to do absolutely nothing. We have an activity crisis in the legislature, a staffing problem in the executive, and a court that's mired in procedural muck.

Granted, there's been progress towards fixing some of these things, but there's still a lot of work left to do. NTN's goal is to not only address these problems, but make the legislature actually fun to be in through interesting RP legislation and expanding opportunities for nations to get involved in the region. Obviously TCU and NM have different ideas, and that's good. If we have opposing views then we'll be able to have some spirited debate in the region, get people involved, and even attract new nations. But I don't want to sink back into a malaise of inactive legislators and a dispirited executive.

Independents have a place in our politics, but parties do too.

I understand that there needs to be change and a boost in activity, but you were saying that Independents were being elected with little votes, is that down to them being independent from parties, or from the fact our chambers of congress were too big? I seem to believe its the latter. And I understand that I missed a lot, and I'm sure that views have changed during that time, but I understand that we are in a situation where change is needed and I just believe that parties aren't the answer to an activity crisis caused by having candidates getting elected with barely any votes.

I think a variety of factors explain it: often, the candidacies in question were low-risk, low-effort ones that didn't take much of a stance on anything, emphasizing their "independence" and willingness to compromise when we needed people with bold agendas. While the size of the chamber partially caused the lower vote counts, the candidates need to excite people. When managed correctly, political parties can mobilize and organize voters in a way that independents can't match. Before the re-establishment of the military (arguably a watershed moment for this genelec), our politics were as bland as oatmeal. Parties can excite people and bring political discourse to the fore. Besides, failing all other arguments we've tried an independent-centric legislature. I'd argue it hasn't worked in terms of regional engagement, so I founded NTN to address the problem.
