It was because the Czechoslovak Legion was closing in on the city. The Tsar and his family likely would've lived longer had the west not tried to use the legion to reopen the Eastern Front.

I know, but the adults would probably die at some later point, I think they would've been judged and executed anyways, maybe the kids would have lived.
