Jesus, what is that show? I laughed so hard, and went to the beginning to watch the whole thing. One of the funnier displays of incompetence and uncomfortable awkwardness I've seen. The anchor looks vaguely familiar, too...

The show is called The Day Today. As I’m sure you can tell it’s a satirical news show from 1994. The creator of the show and actor for the anchor is Chris Morris, who would go on to make some similar shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s, except a lot more controversial.

I should also note that The Day Today is famous for launching the career of Steve Coogan who portrayed Alan Partridge, a sports broadcaster who would go on to be the main character in several of his own shows.

The guy is a legend! 😍

By the way, how are the blackjack coming on, Holly United??

Cried a slender young lady named Toni,
With a bottom exceedingly bony,
"I'll say this for my rump:
Though it may not be plump,
It's my own, not a silicone phony!"

Never heard of spiritual zombies before, to be honest.

LOL.

Brass Eye also made by the same guy is even more out there. It was very controversial in its day and was effectively banned. TV Offal was pretty controversial as well and was on the same TV station. Today it’s all reality TV crap. I think I preferred the 90s.... 📺

I noticed Brass Eye mentioned quite a bit when searching Chris Morris and found the 2001 special online. I can see why people hated this back in 2001. I feel so bad for laughing at it. I especially died on the Pedophile Island bit.

From the Office of the Delegate

I will be assuming the mantle of the "Grinch of Halloween" this year in an effort to cancel the holiday.

Slipping through streets
to purloin and pilfer
all of the creeps
from the video for "Thriller"

Stealing the pumpkins from each child's doorstep,
Each carefully planned costume from out of their closet,
and believe it or not, I'll be going so far,
as to empty the pantries of all fun-sized candies.

And on All-Hallows Eve, all the girls and boys,
Will emerge from their doors for their Halloween joys.
But narry a cobweb will be found to be clinging,
In any dark corner throughout that whole evening.

Each spook, sprite and fright, each goblin and ghost,
Will be absent from each of their long-standing post
And this Hallows Eve will be able to boast
Being the least frightening of days instead of the most.

Also that means no zombies. So there.

Brilliant.

Seems like a funny guy. I'm going to look up more of that news show.

TV Offal, from what I can tell, looks to have had some pretty creative segments. I think I would still tune in to that show if it was still being made.

I share a similar sentiment regarding reality tv. Although, is that still the current state of television? I'm pretty out of touch with what the tv landscape currently looks like. I would imagine places like youtube are where all of the real creativity lies, though it's extremely hard to actually find anything on there...

Panther wrote:Although, is that still the current state of television?

I generally avoid TV today. The reality stream started as a small segment of the output. Now it dominates. I’m old enough to remember when TV in my country could and would take risks. The two shows above, like or loathe them, were examples of this. There’s no way either show would get made here today. Reality TV is the bad apple in the barrel. In time its poisoned and dumbed down the rest of mainstream TV to the point where most of it is now unwatchable crap.

I don't know if these shows are exactly risky, but I've watched a good number of crime dramas from your country, and I found them all very rewarding. Shows like Broadchurch, Shetland, Hinterland, Wallander. They're bleak and moody, and the landscapes are stunning. But, I tend to favor dramas over comedies.
