I think some places/cultures especially in Europe count Mexico as part of Central America (but it's actually North America.)
I think a lot Europeans think of Mexico as North and/or Central American. Sort of like how Turkey is European and/or Asian.
Politically and geologically, Mexico is part of North America. Central America and the Caribbean region politically is counted has being part of North America. Geologically, Central America from central Guatemala southward including all of Panama and the Caribbean islands are there own continent since they sit on the Caribbean plate. The Caribbean plate was formed somewhere in the Pacific. Over millions of years it has been drifting east. Remember, in the Americas its mainly three main plates. The North American plate, in the middle the Caribbean plate and then the South American plate.
Special note, Cuba might be in the Caribbean but it sits outside the Caribbean plate. Cuba actually sits on the North American plate.
