apparently there's an idea bouncing around some political areas called universal basic income. I don't know if it's still actually relevant or if all the debates about it already died down by the time it reached me, but either way I'm curious on if you people could explain what it is exactly and what your thoughts on it are.
Basically it’s the idea that every citizen of a country should, no matter what, receive a set amount of money every week or month depending on the proposal. Personally I think it could potentially work as a replacement for welfare.
Replaces bureaucracy and surveillance tax money sinks. Which in itself can finance universal income in quite some countries in theory if they have administrator bloat, in itself that means ministries and government organs above become obsolete as well. To be safe, it's also often just a basic income for rent + food + some pocket money and some leisure activities, which is good for the countries own economy and most will flow back through taxes to the state. One thing that was observed is that food prices may increase and it results in a +/- equilibrium where people are fed and it basically is a circulation of money back and forth - or so I read somewhere but whatever.
Obviously there are points to criticise, but those points often aren't problems with the universal income. They're mostly side effects caused by how little is done by the state, for example building enough to guarantee living places - or they're outright blocking it, California seems notorious for that in the big cities there. It really depends on the countries, most English ones need to do a whole lot more to make it work without causing other problems as they let their countries run down into a shabby poor state extorting their citizens.
PS.: It should be noted that such proposals make sense if the right to acquire universal income is for natives or spouses of natives. Otherwise also if immigrants pay taxes, they might become eligible when they earned it, so that they may as well retire safely. Universal income is seen as a replacement for government pension / benefits systems in some countries.
You cannot print physical money. There are protection systems and symbols on currency that prevent you from doing so.
