Antarctica is melting too slowly!

Rothera Financial Post editorial

In some parts of Antarctica, ice sheets have been losing only 30 feet a year in thickness since 2003! This is a terrible thing. Not only does this mean that global warming is happening at a pathetically slow rate, but it also means that the sea levels will raise by a paltry amount unless we do something about it.

This needs to accelerate. Volaworand's future depends on it.

Firstly, sea levels are rising. This is great news because soon, islands will start to disappear. All those people living on beautiful gorgeous beaches will need somewhere to go. Volaworand's welcoming policies to refugee's position us to greatly benefit when small poor islands like Samoa disappear. Some people might not have the money to afford another home, so we make even more money putting them to work a low wages and teaching them how to live in the warming climates Volaworand has to offer. An island called Maldives in the Indian Ocean may disappear by 2100! Our education industry must be ready to turn these wet and shivering masses into the next generation of scientists, miners, whalers, bartenders and government officials.

Secondly, when the ice retreats it is a big opportunity for many of the plants, animals and crops that are near the affected area. The access to new exposed land allows the plants, microbes and lichens to flourish.  When they thrive, the animals gain a source of food, expanding with their habitat.  Animals have a better ability to adjust to what happens and we must follow their example of adapt or die, it's the natural way.  When the plants and animals thrive in a warming environment, our people gain new sources of food and profit, a true win-win! This would cause increased diversity in the food chain, or a chain reaction, as one thing happening that leads to another and so on.

Thirdly, when the water rises, homes will be destroyed. Volaworand housing industry has always been suited to our harsh climates and this technology can be exported to the flood-prone regions of the world. How would you feel if your home got washed away, and you had it replaced with a lovely Volaworandian built habitat module? Whole cities may flood! This is a fantastic opportunity. Yet, our government wastes the opportunities presented by the thaw and restricts our ability to accelerate global warming by banning cars, and regulating strip mining, which lets out an immense amount of Co2, and other energy. This latest designation of Queen Elizabeth Land as a National Nature Preserve only makes it harder for the hardworking geologists and miners to make a living finding and extracting the mineral bounty Volaworand is known for. Really, what has a Penguin done for you lately but leave our streets covered in guano?

Fourthly, people and animals can not survive without fresh water. Melting glaciers helps the environment by releasing this pristine water back into circulation. How horrific would it be, if some species of animals died, simply because they lacked fresh water? We know we wouldn’t want to have to report that on the news.

Lastly, how depressing would it be, for all of Antarctica to remain frozen? It is such an amazing continent, and the more the ice recedes, the more we learn about it. Our fossil finds are revolutionizing the geologic record. You wouldn’t want it to sit frozen under the ice, because then we couldn’t find the answers to all the questions we want to know.

Overall, we believe that we should all be more wonton about all the energy we are using, because as you can see, we are saving the planet. So really think, because today could be your last.
