Agora: A Regional Overview

Agora

Regional Overview

What is Agora?

The Agora ([ˈæɡərə]; Ancient Greek: Ἀγορά Agorá) was a central spot in ancient Greek city-states. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place" or "assembly". The agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city. Like its ancient counterpart, the City of Agora is a meeting place and cultural center for the nations who have chosen to make the region their home.

The city and region of Agora is a pan-dimensional space, 'out-of-time', a 'non-place' on the time-line of history. Agora is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The nations and people of Agora exist when and where they choose to.

Residents and guests of the region meet, informally, in the Convergence Plaza, an architectural marvel which straddles the confluence of the three rivers of Agora from which it takes its name. The Plaza acts as the setting for the Regional Message Board (RMB).

History

(Working on it)

Origins in Westphalia

(Stuff happened; we moved away. Film at 11:00)

Finding Agora

(Oh, look, an empty city into which we can move.)

Creating a New Future

(Bright, shiny and full of possibility.)

"The Confluence is a curricular plaza at the very center of the city in the neighborhood of 'Eísodos', the 'arrival district'.

The city of Agora is built at the junction of three rivers. The largest, and the one the other two feed into, runs from North to South, dividing the city into two equal halves. The other two rivers enter the city from the Northwest and Northeast and meet the main river at the center of the city. The names of these rivers will be revealed later.

At the joining point of the three rivers, at the center of the city, a great public square has been built suspended above the confluence of the waters below. The five spectacular struts that support this meeting place of the people also serve as bridges, each leading to a different bank of the river system. That, and the fact that travel and trade in Agora is conducted largely on the city's maze of canals, makes Eísodos a busy and vibrant neighborhood. Port services line the banks and of the rivers in this district and the offices of Immigration Service cluster at the base of each bridge like moss on a rock.

Around the perimeter of this architectural miracle of a public gathering place are shops, kiosks, traveling merchants and other such things imagined to be found in a busy hub of culture and trade. Minor offices of the region's nations, small storefronts, literally, will be among the the commercial clutter. It is probably around the front of these such offices where you will cluster, or talk as you stroll around the circular plaza. "

The Imperial Union of Iescech:

“I don't know if Agora would want this or not, or if they have space for it, but just as a show of my respect for your region and my support, I would like to donate this statue to you guys. It's called "Amadea", and it shows a woman holding her child and a lantern up to pave the way for a new future. Actually, the artist who commissioned this work, Ermma Kalle, wanted this statue to go from place to place that needed it the most in her will. So, Iescech has no need for it anymore, so if you would like to put this somewhere in your region, that would be fantastic.”

A very thoughtful gift from an old trusted friend. We will be keeping relations with Westphalia open and friendly. Travel between the two is unrestricted. I'll be happy to give the new password to anyone who requests it, of the people who are in our slowly-growing group, that is.

That's excellent! I assume we've accepted?

It's in the crate over there. *Mole waves indistinctly*

'Amadea' means 'God's love' in Latin.
It's a beautiful statue and I think one of our first decisions is about where to have it displayed.
A nice public place, I would hope.

We'll dedicate a park for it. That way everyone can appreciate it.

Might get more air-play if it were in front of a public building. And the park could be in front of the building as well.
In front of the 'Bureau of Recruitment and Citizenship'? As a symbol of light leading the way out of darkness?

So I'd like to know whom, besides myself, would like to work in 'Recruitment and Citizenship'?
It won't be too busy at first, but best to get trained while it's slow.
You'll be given special forum privileges to grant new applicants citizenship rights on the forum and other levels of access, such as 'tourist' and 'diplomat' visas.

The 'Bureau of Recruitment and Citizenship' will be in the 'Eísodos' Arrival District neighborhood, a vibrant and ever-changing place to live and work.

Eísodos, the 'Arrival District', is at the center of the city and clings to the banks on either side of the rivers that run through the city.

Nidaros is the neighborhood of the capital buildings and is where affairs of State take place. This 'Regional Administration District' surrounds the 'Arrival District'.

For convenience, Phile, the 'Foreign Affairs District', is the next ring and contains within its boundaries the 'Bureau of Foreign Affairs', the World Assembly Hall, where WA issues are debated and the region's ghetto of Consulates and Embassies.

If it's fun you seek, the 'Entertainment District' Théatro circles the entire city with a dense population of business catering to every sensory pleasure.

The final, outer ring before you come to the civic walls is Phobos, the 'Technical Affairs District'. A quiet, sprawling suburb marked by one important, imposing feature; the 'Forum Administrative Offices &Technical Support' building is second in size only to the 'Regional Assembly' hall in Nidaros.

"Oh, no, not Victorian, sorry. As much as I like the steam-punk world, we're not going there.

Agora will be 'out-of-time', a non-place on the time-line of history. Instead, let Agora be everywhere at once.

Yes, it's a city built of the confluence of three rivers and uses canals as a form of transportation, but it's also a city of high-technology and 'modern' conveniences. The people of Agora don't wear togas because it's ancient Greece, they wear them because it's Friday and Friday is casual-dress day.

No matter from which you wish to belong, the 'Convergence' chat RMB is open for pretty much anything, like the spaceport of a thriving and busy stellar empire."

Eísodos 'Arrival District'

While the other districts follow a ring formation, the Eísodos district follows the banks of the three rivers Dýnam, Eiríni and Ágrios.

The lower section of the main river, Dýnam Major, is the home to the city's ports of trade which uses the majority of the real estate for this purpose. There is housing available, but it is functional and gritty.

The Ágrios River, running into the city from the Northeast, has ironically been tamed by so many dams, locks and hydro-turbines, that it is no longer the wild torrent it was named after, but is instead a maze of concrete channels and, due to the noise of the turbines, fit only for light-industry and the very hard of hearing.

The Eiríni side of the fork, meandering slowly across the country-side before entering the Northwest side of the city and being straightened into the canal that is the landing point for all immigrants. Above The Confluence, the left bank of the Eiríni is for the 'normal' disembarking folk and the right bank is for VIP visitors.

Dýnam Minor, above the point where the rivers merge, is the swankiest piece of real-estate in town. Sandwiched between the Nidaros Regional Administration Distract and the Phile Foreign Affairs District, this is THE place to live if you're a diplomat, a politician, or pretending to be either. There seem to be two long marinas clutching the shore on either bank of this section of the river.

The neighborhoods of Nidaros and Phile are very similar, with Nidaros being the more up-scale but the majority of the actual commerce taking place in the Phile commercial district. The Nidaros commercial district is crowded with offices for political action groups, lobbyists and other 'government-related' establishments. Housing in both neighborhoods is expensive and exclusive. The Phile residential neighborhood is less-densely developed and there are larger, un-divided properties here. Businesses are appropriate to the up-scale nature of the environs.

The Nidaros 'Regional Administration' and Phile 'Foreign Affairs' districts are located, respectively, on the left and right 'wedges' of land inside the city formed by the three rivers.

For easy access, there is a bridge linking each of these districts to the central RMB 'Confluence', located in the Eísodos district.

The Théatro neighborhoods are the most densely populated in Agora and also the most varied. Climbing the sides of the many stadia and arenas are every conceivable sort of shop, food-service, brothel and other stimulations for the senses, sometimes all at once in one dingy place. Alive and vibrant, this neighborhood is the most sought after, even for those who may have a primary residence in a 'safer' neighborhood; 'safer' doesn't always mean 'excitement', and if excitement is what you're after, the Théatro residential and commercial districts are where it's happening. If it can be bought and sold, it's on the market somewhere in this ring of the city.
If quiet is what you prefer, Phobos is the suburb for you. The farthest ring of neighborhoods in Agora, Phobos, technically, ends at the civic wall, but its influence extends much further out than one might initially believe. The farms and settlements outside the city are reliant on this district to provide many needed services and commercial opportunities. Government-sponsored housing is largely concentrated in this area and largely clustered at the city's Southern side of the ring, close to the massive Technical Administration Building, whose spectacular arc over the river was necessary to allow for large cargo-ships to enter the Eísodos ports on the Dýnam Major. I guess it didn't need to be built over the river at all, but it's really cool to look at; a massive structure, beautifully designed.

Recently, the quiet life of the suburbs has been attracting a quiet kind of criminal. The city's Astynomia, the 'Wiggles', are keeping the situation under quiet surveillance.

Geography

The City

The city of Agora is built at the junction of three rivers. The largest, the Dýnam, and the one the other two, the Eiríni and Ágrios, feed into, runs from North to South, dividing the city into two equal halves.

Mountains

Mountains of the Sky to the North, from which the Dýnam River flows.

Ágrios Mountains to the East, from which the Ágrios River flows. Acropolis in the foothills close to the city.

The Plains of Eiríni , to the West, are Agora's agricultural breadbasket. The Eiríni River flows through these plains from it's source in the Sleepy Mountains far to the West.

Rivers

'Dýnam' is the central river and divided into 'Dýnam Minor' and 'Dýnam Major', North and South of the confluence respectively.

The 'Eiríni' is the quiet river which runs from NorthWest to the center and is the hub of Agoran immigration services.

The 'Ágrios' river, wildest of the three, runs from the Northeast to the center of the city and is the source of much of the city's hydro-electric power.

The rivers of Agora come from the mountains to the North and the Dýnam River empties, eventually, to the sea to the south and water-borne transport and trade are very popular.

The three tributaries wind around the countryside, as rivers do, before being channeled at the edge of the city into arrow-straight commerce-lined canals. Smaller tributary canals are regularly flushed by the carefully-constructed network of waterways. Canal water is never allowed to stagnate or become fouled. There are obviously going to be some exceptions but on the whole the rivers of Agora and the intricate web of transport canals are a marvel of civil engineering and environmental stewardship.

The Southern Sea

"The Constitutional Monarchy of Metcalfe : *Raises hand*
"Are we still allowed to revile the rivers once the names are revealed?"

An odd question from the North. I will make every effort to make these rivers 'lovable'.

Starting with some names.

'Dýnam' is the central river and divided into 'Dýnam Minor' and 'Dýnam Major', North and South of the confluence respectively.

The 'Eiríni' is the quiet river which runs from NorthWest to the center and is the hub of Agoran immigration services.

I hope somebody is writing this down.

The rivers of Agora come from the mountains to the North and the Dyman River empties, eventually, to the sea to the south but not too far downriver as water-borne transport and trade are very popular. More like London, New York or Istanbul.

We are currently setting up headquarters in the financial district of Agora. However, if you would like to set up your account today, please telegram Iescech to let him know that you would like an account opened. Please note that official business will not be starting until all of the nickels have been counted. Over 2981 nickels counted and counting.

New Programs: COMING SOON

  • Poor Plutus Charity Program: Donate your some of your nickels to the Poor Plutus Charity Program. Telegram Iescech with how much you would like to donate, and the nickels will be withdrawn from your account. We will then distribute it among the nations who have the fewest nickels.

  • Plutus Welcoming Fund: Donate nickels to the Plutus Welcoming Fund so that we can welcome new nations to Agora with some startup change.

Do you have a suggestion for a program or project? Let Iescech know so that we can help benefit Agora, one nickel at a time.

    Policies

    • If your nation is deleted, CTEs, or you move to another region, your assets will be seized and distributed among the other nations, or, possibly, put into the Plutus Welcoming Fund. Likewise, if you are deemed to be have behaved especially badly, or are deemed to have exhibited inappropriate conduct, you will be held liable for paying a fine if we are asked by the Government. The nation(s) you are transferring to will have to telegram Iescech confirming that they will accept the transfer. The process is lengthy because we encourage nations to give to our two donation programs, rather than specific nations.

    • You may terminate your account at anytime. Please note that once you have terminated your account, your nickels will be distributed amongst the other nations, and you will not be able to get those nickels back by opening up your account again.

    • If the Government decides that your account needs to be seized for legal reasons, your account will be frozen, and your assets will be taken from you until further notice.

    • DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES engage in the intentional practice of "like harassment" (harassing others to like your messages), "like favoriting" (liking someone's message(s) in return for them liking your message(s), or "like counterfeiting" (quoting a message instead of liking it, with the intent of 'liking' something without the action of the actual 'like' button). If you are suspected of doing so, your account will be frozen until the Government confirms or denies the wrongdoing. If you are found guilty, you will not be able to open another account, and we will distribute your nickels among the other nations.

The Agora Protergatis

The Agora Protergatis is the region's Chief Executive Officer with authority second only to the founder.

The Protergatis is the spokesperson for the nations of Agora and represents the population in the regional government. They are responsible for maintaining the region's Factbook and dispatches as well as presenting the 'Agora Protergatis' national issues to the public vote. The Protergatis position holds a permanent voting seat on many regional and civic councils, including the Plutus Trust Board of Directors.

The position is an electable one with candidates being from the general population of the region. The selection process occurs seasonally* with the winner being chosen by popular vote. The player elected to the position is given the password to the nation/character and it is placed in their stewardship. Players are expected to surrender the position and the character at the end of their term in office to the newly-elected Protergatis.

The position is subject to monthly public performance reviews.

Elections

The WA Delegate Election

(Pretty much whoever has the most endorsements at update time)
Elections will be held in March, June, September and December and a poll for the selection of the Protergatis be posted for not less than one week beginning on the first day of each of those months. The day the poll is posted a region-wide telegram will be sent to the nations of the region explaining 'who', 'what' and 'why' and anything else that may be deemed relevant.

All nations in Agora will be allowed to vote but only the ballots of 'voting citizens' will be counted in the final tally. There will be a vetting process for those players who request to be included in the category of 'voting citizen', which will include a statement that the player is familiar with the rules and regulations of the region (and of the game NationStates itself) and that they agree to abide by these rules and regulations. All resident of Agora will be allowed to vote as I believe that will encourage players to participate and even if 'non-voter' players' ballots won't count in the final tally, it will give us a better idea of where we are going as a region.

If elections to positions other than the Protergatis are taking place, or there are issues and initiatives that need to be addressed by popular vote, this week will be one of discussion and debate and following the selection of the AP, new polls will be posted to tally support for each of them until the process is complete. More important decisions dealt with by poll should be scheduled to be posted beginning on a Friday and remaining up through the weekend and the following Monday, so four days at least. This will give everyone a chance to have their voice heard. Lesser issues can have polls of shorter duration but I still think three days should be the minimum duration, though being posted over a weekend, when most players have time to log-in, will not be mandatory.
