REPUBLIC OF AHVALAND HISTORY

Ahvaland was an autonomous Grand Duchy until 1913 when Gustavus IX, the last Grand Duke, died without producing an heir. The country then became a democratic republic and at the same time all titles of nobility were abolished. Ahvaland was neutral in both World Wars and has remained isolationist in outlook ever since.

The Head of State is the President of the Republic of Ahvaland. A list of Presidents is set out below:

Jakob Rundstrom 1933-1945 - served extra 2 years because of the Second World War
Isak Ahlberg 1945-1955
Jakob Rundstrom 1955-1965
Borghild Grahn 1965-1975 - first female President - resigned.
Erno Korhonnen 1975-1985 - died in office.
Fredrika Almstedt 1985-date - confirmed as President for Life by plebiscite.
