18. Pope Pontus VIII “The Restorer of the Faith”

Reign: Years 482–Present

The current Supreme Pontiff of the Papal State of the Cross Guild, Pope Pontus VIII chose his regnal name in honor of Pope Pontus the Holy, the nation’s founder. In doing so, he pledged to return the Cross Guild to the ideals upon which it was built: unwavering faith, righteous leadership, justice, and service to God. (In real-world tradition, newly elected popes customarily choose a regnal name to honor predecessors or ideals they wish to emulate.)

Born into a humble family in the coastal Province of Saint Aurelius, Pontus VIII entered the priesthood at an early age. Known for his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering discipline, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Neo Orthodox Church. As Archbishop and later Cardinal, he became respected for resolving disputes between provinces, strengthening monasteries, and expanding charitable missions. Following the death of his predecessor, the Holy Synod unanimously elected him as the eighteenth Supreme Pontiff of the Cross Guild.

From the first day of his pontificate, Pope Pontus VIII declared that the nation would enter an era known as The Restoration, a movement dedicated to strengthening both the Church and the state without abandoning the principles that had guided the Cross Guild for centuries.

One of his first accomplishments was the restoration of hundreds of ancient churches, monasteries, and shrines that had fallen into neglect. Historic cathedrals were repaired, priceless religious manuscripts were preserved, and sacred relics were placed under permanent protection. Across the nation, bells once again rang from towers that had stood silent for generations.

Recognizing the importance of education, Pontus VIII greatly expanded the nation’s schools and seminaries. New universities were established to teach theology, history, philosophy, medicine, engineering, and law. His belief that faith and knowledge should strengthen one another transformed the Cross Guild into a center of scholarship, attracting students and clergy from across the world.

Under his leadership, the Church’s humanitarian work reached unprecedented levels. Hospitals, orphanages, shelters, and charitable foundations received increased funding from the Holy Treasury. During times of famine, disease, and natural disasters, the Cross Guild became known for sending relief ships, doctors, missionaries, and engineers to assist those in need regardless of nationality or creed.

Pope Pontus VIII also reformed the government while preserving its theocratic foundations. He expanded the authority of the Sacred Assembly, allowing representatives from every province to present the concerns of their citizens directly before the Holy Synod. Although the people’s representatives debate civil matters, the Church remains the supreme authority, ensuring that every law and policy remains consistent with the teachings of the Neo Orthodox faith.

Understanding that peace is safeguarded through strength, Pontus VIII modernized the Crusader Legions and the Fleet of Saint Peter. Advanced fortifications were constructed along the nation’s borders, new warships entered service, and officers received both military and theological education, ensuring that every commander understood not only the art of war but also the moral responsibilities of wielding power.

Beyond military and governmental reforms, Pope Pontus VIII became known as a tireless advocate for unity among the faithful. He traveled extensively throughout the Cross Guild, visiting remote villages, blessing factories and shipyards, celebrating liturgies in great cathedrals, and personally meeting with workers, soldiers, farmers, and children. These journeys earned him the affectionate title “The Shepherd of the People.”

Internationally, Pontus VIII strengthened diplomatic ties with friendly nations while encouraging peaceful cooperation and mutual respect. His policy of “Faith Through Service” emphasized that the Cross Guild should be recognized not only for its military strength, but also for its compassion, integrity, and willingness to aid those in need.

Today, Pope Pontus VIII is remembered as a leader who renewed the spirit of the Cross Guild without abandoning its traditions. Under his guidance, the nation enjoys prosperity, stability, and deep religious devotion. Churches are filled, industries thrive, the armed forces remain vigilant, and the people continue to place their trust in both God and the Holy See.

His words, engraved in white marble at the entrance of the Grand Cathedral of the Holy Cross, have become the guiding principle of a new generation:

“A nation is not made great by the strength of its armies alone, but by the faith of its people, the justice of its rulers, and the mercy it shows to all. Let the Cross forever be our guide, and let every generation leave the world more faithful than the one before it.”
