How Capitalist Ideology Is Undermining the Western World

Introduction
In recent years, "capitalist ideology"—once rooted in freedom of capital —has evolved into a rigid worldview that emphasizes capital over environment, business over art, and profit over people. While its advocates promote it as freedom and prosperity, critics argue it’s actively dismantling the foundational values of the Western world, particularly in America.

Profit over People
Capitalist ideology teaches that society is built on money —especially along CEO, millionaire, and billionaire lines. Prominent advocate Jeff Bezos declared: "You can work long, hard, or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three."

This vision abandons individuality and emptahy in favor of purely profit driven policies, replacing the American principle of liberty with a system of work-based grievance.

Institutional Capture and Cultural Decline
Capitalist ideology has captured key Western institutions:

• Education: In 2021, the Missouri legislature convened a hearing on the topic of how history is taught in the state, Andrew Bolger came armed with a dire warning, "the schools were turning kids red". The solution, Bolger argued, was to reorient the schools away from communism and toward what he called “liberty’s foundation,” steeping kids in the value of hard work and the wonders of free enterprise

• Colleges: In 2024, during the run up to the US election, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk began his 'You're Being Brainwashed' tour around American campuses, shortly after this college aged Americans would vote just 52% in favour of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, a 25 point drop-off from the 2020 election and with young men voting 56% in favour of Republican candidate Donald Trump, himself an infamous business tycoon and ultra-capitalist.

• Military: The Pentagon, headquarters to the US Department of Defense, has been found to have been funding action films over the past few decades such as Iron Man and Captain America, with hopes of showing the US military in a positive light to build support for the US's profitmongering imperialist wars.

• Media & Corporations: In 2025, following prominent American socialist Zohran Mamdani's victory in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, much of American media, even that which leans left, began to demonise the Democratic candidate. The New York times published a hit piece on the Democratic candidate just two days after his victory, trying to stir up race-based hatred by stating that Mamdani, born in Uganda to Indian parents, had identified as African-American and Asian on a college application. Even liberal media in the USA is afraid of socialists holding positions of power.

Even healthcare—a cornerstone of the West—is under attack. The US remains the only country in the Western world without socialised healthcare and every day the countries many politicians move further and further away from changing this. And in the UK the most popular politician, Nigel Farage, has been founded promoting insurance based healthcare over the National Health Service on numerous occasions.

Anti-American by Nature
Capitalist ideology contradicts America's founding belief that "all men are created equal." Instead of uniting citizens through common values, it divides them by wealth, class, and political opinion.

Socialist Journalist and Author, and creator of 'the Wire', David Simon writes:
"There are definitely two Americas. I live in one, on one block in Baltimore that is part of the viable America, the America that is connected to its own economy, where there is a plausible future for the people born into it. About 20 blocks away is another America entirely."

In 2023, a mural of Paul Robeson was defaced and in 2019 the grave of Karl Marx in the United Kingdom was vandalised. President Donald "Drill Baby Drill" Trump even renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America much to the chagrin of the social democratic President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Consequences of Capitalist Dominance
The cost of capitalist ideology is already visible:

• Academic decline: Schools that focus on capitalist propaganda over human rights are seeing higher rates of bullying and the teaching of ideology over fact.

• Loss of public trust: Faith in democracy is hitting historic lows across the West.

• Censorship & fear: Critics are silenced, careers destroyed, and honest dialogue discouraged.

Even capitalist intellectuals are speaking out. Martin Wolf, chief economics writer of the Financial Times, writes:

If the West is to endure, we must return to the principles that made it great: individual freedom, economic equality, and national unity.
