Summary:

The pirate spirit Vainius, a mortal locked in a twisted deal with The Jeweled Liar which grants him near invulnerability, hunts a monster on behalf of the Watcher, who traps him through the control of a magic whistle – tied to his life force and empowered to summon him. After he slays the beast, the sound of that very whistle reverberates in his ears. Called to shore, Vainius faces the Watcher, and receives a new assignment in the wake of the brewing war.
