The Chiho Defence Forces are the military forces of the Chihoese Commonwealth. The Chiho Defence Force is comprised of three service branches: the Chiho Ground Defence Force, the Chiho Naval Defence Force, and the Chiho Air Defence Force.
The Chiho Defence Forces is overseen by the Ministry of Defence, with the president acting as the commander-in-chief. The CDF is empowered by the constitution and parliament to protect the country's interests, sovereignty, and territorial integrity from external threats.
The CDF currently has an active force of approximately 308,794 personnel and a reserve force of over a million personnel. A professional volunteer force forms the backbone of the CDF, with conscripts supplementing the force during periods of national emergency and war. Conscripts are trained during a two year period under the National Service Program at the age of 18 for able bodied men and women.
History [edit]
The Chiho Defence Forces traces its origins back to the Republican Era armed forces known as the Republic of Chiho Armed Forces. The Republic of Chiho Armed Forces was founded shortly after the revolution in 1889. Many of its initial members were former members of Republican militias and Republican-aligned warlord armies. The ROC Armed Forces would continue to serve as the military forces of Chiho during the period of military rule and up to its end in 1991. 1991 saw a tremendous amount of change for both Chiho and its military. With the end of the Republic and the founding of the Chihoese Commonwealth, the military was reorganized into todays Chiho Defence Forces.

The Chiho Naval Defence Force (CNDF) is the naval warfare branch of the Chiho Defence Forces. The CNDF is responsible for ensuring freedom of navigation for civilian and maritime traffic, projecting naval power, and the establishment and maintenance of critical maritime infrastructure. The CNDF also participates in regional security patrols and international aid missions.
Chihoese naval vessels use the ship prefix CCS, Chihoese Commonwealth Ship. As of 2079, the CNDF has 47,830 personnel and a combined fleet of approximately _05 ships. Among the _05 ships, there are 2 helicopter carriers, 14 destroyers, and 12 frigates. Various auxiliary ships such as replenishment vessels support the CNDF in its operations.
The home fleet is headquartered at Mizuho Naval Base and operates out of over a dozen domestic and overseas naval bases. Under current procurement plans, the CNDF is slated to see dozens ships enter service by the end of the decade.
Chiho Marine Corps
The Chiho Marine Corps is the naval infantry branch of the Chiho Naval Defence Force. The marine corps is responsible for conducting amphibious operations and acting as a rapid reaction force for the CDF. As of 2079, there are approximately 15,000 marines serving in the marine corps.
Following the release of the 2020 Defence White Paper and the "Southern Flank Strategy", the majority of the marine corps units were relocated to Hanashima Province. The paper identified the island chain as a significant strategic position in the overall defence of the country, and that further fortification and use of marine corps assets would take some pressure off of naval deployments as a whole.

National Service [edit]
Chiho's national conscription system is known as National Service (NS). Under the National Service Act, all able-bodied men and women, who are citizens or permanent residents, must serve in the Chiho Defence Forces or a designated national service organization for a period of one to two years. Chihoese law classifies NS enlistees as members of the reserve force. The reserve component of the CDF is not counted towards the appromixately 298,794 professional volunteer force of the CDF. Under the same laws, NS enlistees and reserve force personnel are prohibited from active combat roles and deployments during peacetime. Contemporary estimates put the number of NS enlistees and the reserve force at over three million personnel.
NS enlistees typically serve out their enlistment period in the Ground Defence Force, Naval Defence Force, or Air Defence Force. The Ground Defence Force recieves the vast majority of enlistees, as the CNDF and the CADF often require more specialized training for their roles. During their enlistment period, enlistees are given basic military training and specialized training as required.
