The Grand Order of St. Astraea was a military order in modern-day St. Astraea that was of sizable influence during the medieval period. After a period of territorial conquest, the Order united the multiple petty Kingdoms within the region underneath a royal confederacy in exchange for military and religious hegemony. After an attempted succession by a constituent kingdom, the Grand Order became a constitutional monarchy. A wave of social unrest caused by non-progressive social reform and abuses of power by the government led to a period of massive civil unrest which ended with a military coup d'état after the assassination of the royal family. The new military regime, nicknamed the Blackcoat Clique, enacted totalitarian policies to strengthen the nation's military and to "purify" it of "degenerate and corrupting" influence. After sidelining the new High King Darius Aubelot into a puppet status following semi-successful attempts at minor liberal reform, the Blackcoat Clique consolidated power for a potential defensive war. In 200 ACC High King Darius died, leaving the crown to his only child Arianus Aubelot.
St. Astraea’s government is officially a constitutional federal elective monarchy but due to the Blackcoat Coup, the country runs as an authoritarian oligarchy underneath a military junta. The junta maintains a degree of legality that is vague, allowing it to act with extrajudicial means if necessary to accomplish its goals. While the Diet still functions and the office of the High Queen still maintains much legal power, de facto control of the nation is sourced to the Council for National Salvation which maintains itself as the upper house of the Diet. The Council is composed of regime supporters, military leaders, and church officials. It is led by the “Big 3”: Grand Marshal Salazar Gonzalez, Grand Marshal Bruce Prescott, and Grand Marshal Rose Tenya. Each contends over their own factions of the Blackcoat Clique, Gonzalez favoring a pragmatic liberal approach, Tenya favoring a hardliner ultranationalist system, while Prescott acts as a mediating vote. The position of High Queen holds little true power in the nation and only acts as a rubber stamping office for the actions of the Council.
Although an administrative branch of the Astral Command, the Astral Command Colonial Authority acts with a degree of a relative authority. The Authority is charged with the administration, governance, and general management of the extra-terrestrial territories of the Grand Order. Key individuals within the Authority are Prefect Magnus Strauss, governor of the largest colonies of St. Astraea, and Adjutant General Lord Earl von Steinberg, the chief of the Colonial Authority. The Authority holds jurisdiction over NUMBER of colonies, them being NAME, New Arcadia, Laurentia, and Elysium, as well as a plethora of other non-terrestrial territories.
The rule of the military junta has led to a massive prioritization in the military of the Grand Order, as the Blackcoat Clique's cited a need to return to the martial tradition of the past. As of 200 ACC, the military is divided between 4 branches: the Army, the Maritime navy, the Air Force, the Astral Command. Each branch has multiple subdivisions, such as the Navy's Marine corps, the Army's "Neo" Knights, and the Astral Command’s Espatier Corps, some of which function as de facto branches of their own. The official charge of the military is to provide protection to the chosen followers of the Saint and its threat capability is well enough to cause a stir in any part of the star system. However the unity among the military has evaporated following the army's coup and the regime's subsequent favoritism has led to the beginnings of an interservice rivalry forming.
Astraean society, that is, upper society composed of aristocrats, the rich, politicians, military officers, and regime supporters are distinctly separate factions. These factions range from saloon groups such as the Humanists and the Remembrancers, to the politically minded conservative and reformist factions in the Holy Diet, to dissidents and regime supports. Preeminent among these factions, though, are the Blackcoats and the Blues. Named for their distinctive black uniform, the military regime that rules over St. Astraea is commonly called the Blackcoats. This clique of officers generally supports a policy of "national salvation", which is a loose set of ideological goals which shares similarities to esoteric fascism, ultranationalism, and the extreme spartanism. They are secretly opposed by the Blues, a league of mainly Astral Command based military officers. Their name is derived from the blue uniforms of the Astral Command, from where much dissidence to the Blackcoats festers. However, there is the dissident Reformist faction, which lacks clear leadership outside the Diet, due to fears of Blackcoat reprisal and crackdown.
Within St. Astraea, there are a few key figures that hold a degree of dominance within society. The first among them are the heads of the Council for National Salvation, the Grand Marshals Gonzalez, Prescott, and Tenya. They act as the unified will and master over the Grand Order with High Queen Arianus as their puppet. In the lower house of the Diet, there is the continued feud between the Remembrancer David Olmos and Humanist Audrey Wilkston between the agendas and minor policies underneath the Blackcoat regime. The Maritime Navy, Army, and Air Force's Chiefs bicker over their role in the government and partake in showmanship to one-up the other in a display of cronyism and corruption. As opposed to this, the Astral Command’s military officers and its adjutant Colonial Authority bureaucrats silently linger in the void of space and the Astaean colonies, content with their independence and utilizing it to plot for a star-centric future. Megacorporations in the making are led by a class of wealthy corporate executives who would make great gambles for a quick buck.
The economy of St. Astraea is highly automated and industrial based. Union activity is low and influence curbed. A vast majority of Astraean industries are dominated by pseudo-megacorporate conglomerates which are occasionally propped by the Council for National Salvation. Unemployment is at a record low, though it is due to massive military recruitment drives that siphon off much of the working population while economic duties are largely relegated toward automatons and robots.
Astraean culture is described as very spartan, religious, reactionary, and totalitarian. The Blackcoat's policy of national salvation has promoted a revival in classical arts while describing modern art as socially corrupting. People are expected to live in spartan conditions and religion is placed upon a high importance in the lives of the people.
Religion has always been an important faucet of St. Astraea due to Astraean history and the current status-quo of "national salvation". The namesake of St. Astraea is the primary icon of worship in the Astraean faith, Angralism. The defied Great Saint is thought to have been an individual of unknown sex (thought commonly referred to as female) during the late classical period who performed great philanthropic actions and preached a modified doctrine of the pagan religion that dominated the modern Astraean region at the time. There are multiple types of Angralism, the most popular being State Angralism and Apostolic Angralism, the former being the spiritual doctrine of the Council for National Salvation and the other being a general veneration of the Great Saint.
