Population and Civil Engineering

It comes with very little surprise that Athejia is home to a gargantuan amount of people, where we put them all is a question that has been and is still being answered by our legions of civil engineers, architects, and governors.

Ivory Towers

In Athejia's major cities the architecture becomes super-sized, dwarfing the width and height of contemporary skyscrapers. Ivory Tower is a term that groups all buildings and districts built in this style. They are 2,800 feet tall at the ground level, with an additional 800 feet underground, and have extremely wide bases to support the weight. Each Ivory Tower is a miniature "city" with multitudes of shops, public facilities, hospitals, etc. located within its walls. However, most of the tower consists of open space and glass as to reduce the feeling of over crowding.

Tidal Metropoli

Engineers have long ago identified the immense power of the ocean currents in the north seas, with an unstoppable and constant bombardment the currents were eating away at the continental shelves of the Athejian islands. The continent shelf is the shallow part of the ocean that rings the shore and is where the majority of ocean based industry takes place. After an extremely lengthy and unprecedented civil works project, an enormous undersea wall over a mile thick now serves as a retaining wall for the continental shelf. As the wall was built into bedrock, massive tunnels were dug from underneath the islands to the construction sites to transport materials and personnel. Overtime the maintenance ways and tunnels were settled by Athejians looking to escape the housing crisis above ground.

Today the wall is nigh unrecognizable from its original state, reinforced glass, blindingly bright spotlights, and defensive structures cover its outer surface, measures to allow its population to gaze out upon the abyssal plane and to defend the wall from sea monsters. Within is a labyrinthine array of bulk transport tunnels, maintenance ways, and staging posts built by the government which is intersected by tunnels dug by private companies and settlers. These tidal metropoli rival Ivory towers in population density, and indeed often stretch all the way from the continental slope to the entranceways of the tunnels like some sort of enormous ants nest.
