Terminology of the Athejian Kingdom

Spirit Circuits

This is a broad term that covers the unique organs utilized by species native to Alterra to accept, store, regulate, and manipulate magical energy. It is possible to use magic without Spirit Circuits but without them it is next to impossible to utilize advanced powerful spells. Personally I have been using this term for a while now since it provides a more defined reason to why colonials are unable to wield magic as well as natives.

Raw Mana

The natural liquid form of magical power typically found in deep pools on and close to the surface, larger deposits can form streams, lakes, and waterfalls. Their presence allows native animals and plants to thrive next to them, often causing side effects such as increased growth rate, larger size, and a whole plethora of unintended side effects.

It is fairly volatile in comparison to water, with extreme changes in temperature triggering a catastrophic explosive reaction capable of annihilating anything or anyone nearby. Native Alterrans can drink it to boost their power but it is not recommended by most doctors as it would be like drinking dirty water you found in some puddle, filled with contaminants from its surrounding environment. Likewise using it directly in magical devices would have a similar effect to pouring vodka in your engine, it works but is nowhere near as efficient or safe as a refined fuel.

Magicules- Atmospheric Mana

Most commonly found permeating the air of our world, magicules refer to any particles of mana that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Unlike its more contemporary liquid form, this gaseous mana is quite stable due to how spread out the particles are unless it is somehow compressed or forced into a container. Natives can ingest and use magicules readily due to specialized cells in their respiratory system and spirit circuits, resulting in the normal native Alterran being able to use spells without liquid or solid mana.

Magitite

Resulting from raw mana being driven deep underground and subjected to immense pressure and heat, magitite is the term for naturally found mana. Typically found as large multi-colored crystal clusters, it is the most efficient and pure source magical energy in nature while also being the most volatile and dangerous. Like its liquid form, magitite will detonate under rapid temperature change, however the sheer amount of energy crammed into the dense crystal means that it is far more prone to this. Rapid changes in pressure, light, and even being hit by something like a pickaxe too hard will shatter the delicate outer layer and the energy inside will escape and destroy everything around it.

Mining this material is a slow, meticulous, and undeniably dangerous job but the rewards are more than worth it.

Elixir

The refined liquid version of raw mana, elixir is ready and safe to ingest in order to boost spells. Mana is strained through various alchemically treated filters in order to remove the larger pieces of contaminant before being distilled for a set of time. It is then placed in a vat that gradually increases temperature in order to disinfect the liquid, keep in mind that this is perfectly safe as it only detonates under rapid temperature changes. Finally it is mixed with a special solute consisting of water, sugar, and starch to stabilize the mixture, make it more viscous and to give it some flavor, acting as a buffer to prevent any accidental self-combustion.

This is typically the fuel used in most magical devices.

Ether

The gold standard for energy in the Jade Dynasty, ether refers to the solidified version of purified mana and unlike its natural counterpart, it is very stable. Magitite is carefully extracted from deep undergound and placed in an isolation tank where the temperature and pressure is gradually lowered to a level on par with the surface's. This dissolves the outershell overtime and the entire crystal cluster turns into liquid. It then undergoes standard mana refinement techniques similar to how elixir is made and is then diluted in a non-reactive alchemical draught. Following this the solution is placed under extreme pressure and turned into dense ingots. The alchemical draught is then glazed over its surface, resulting in a very stable fuel source.

The refinement process for this is quite lengthy and expensive resulting in ether being stored for military or government purposes, the reason why most people use elixir instead.
