"Am I basically a philosopher now?"

It was late in the evening when Yaniv and I decided to stop walking around the canals and settle for the night in a well-covered ditch he had found earlier in the day. The treeline broke just above us, and so we laid comfortably in our blankets and bedrolls, staring up at the clear nightsky; surrounding birch trees looked almost like pillars, holding it up. Maybe Atlas was on his union-mandated break.

"No," I answered.

"Okay." His gaze fixed on the stars above us. "Can I ask you a question?"

"I don't know. Can you?"

"If God exists, why does evil exist?"

"That's a toughie."

"I know," he said. "That's why I'm asking you in particular."

I smiled, but he didn't see. "Well," I uttered. "Everything is, in a sense, good, because everything comes from God, and God is good. Because there are spiritual entities that have free will, us included, then one of their choices is to turn away from God. When you turn away from God, you turn away from goodness, and that's when you get evil."

"Couldn't God have made it impossible for us to turn away from Him?"

"But then we wouldn't have free will."

"I don't want to be free, then," he said.

We usually succumb to the logic of our own worldly orders, and therefore make conclusions that are particular to us, that are unrecognizable to others; the so-called world as-it-is, our experience of it subtracted from the equation, the world when we are not looking, or not there to experience it, is never involved in them. Perhaps that's what He wants.

The Godly dream is of order. They dream of a transcendental Other, a Prime Mover from which all other existence manifests. When an order is respected, any mortal man can tell me what the next step in its pattern is; when the order is transgressed, when 2 + 2 = 5, then it is seen as an intervention from wherever this order emanates - a divine intervention. Concluding this, divinity and transgression are, in structure, the same.

Why else would Son of God die like a criminal? Why else should He return one day to judge us for our sins "like a thief in the night"? Why else would he beat death, not through eternal life, but through death itself?

But I didn't tell Yaniv that.
