A ONE WAY TICKET TO SPACE

Welcome!

Welcome aboard the Luna 146 on its route to Mars. We wish you a pleasant flight in one of the most modern spaceships in the Solar System. To make your flight more enjoyable, we recommend you some short science-fiction stories from the best authors of the 20th century: Arthur C. Clarke and Phillip K. Dick.

Don’t hesitate to ask our staff for any issue that might arise in the course of the flight.

We hope to see you in the near future.

Yours sincerely,
- The NPOStar Team

Arthur C. Clarke
One of the most prominent futurists and SF writers that the Earth has seen to this date. If you want to leave this planet for a while, his stories will never disappoint you.
o The Wind From The Sun
Join “Diana” and John Merton on the last solar wind race of the season! Seven ships are already in the start line ready to sail around the Earth and to the Moon with no other power source than the Sun. Who will win this edition of the billionaires’ sport?
o The Last Command
“This is the President speaking. Because you are hearing me read this message, it means that I am already dead and that our country is destroyed...” A recorded message plays in a secret orbit on the dark side of the Moon.
o Maelstrom II
Something had gone wrong. The capsule didn’t acquire enough velocity during take-off, and Cliff Leyland will be plummeting to his death on the Moon in six hours. Launch Control is working on the issue, but will that be enough to save him?

Philip K. Dick
One of the fathers of weird fiction. If you look for the unexpected, alternative realities, dystopian societies and other-world experiences, have a look at these:
o James P. Crow
Humans depend almost entirely on robots to run civilization. Competitive examinations, the humans can never pass, prove that they are simply not intelligent enough to run their own society. But James P. Crow is passing those tests. And robots will have to accept it.
o Small Town
Verne Haskel is the proud owner of a detailed to the inch train model of Woodland in his basement. Every signpost, every house, even the park trees, are there. However, something is changing. Larson’s Pump and Valve Works is no longer there.
o Breakfast at Twilight
Earl asks his father for a ride to school. Tim, his father, tells him to walk to school, despite the heavy fog. The radio seems broken. And when Earl is about to leave, soldiers march into Tim McLean’s house. They are horrified to see his family in a place like that.

CONVERSATION WITH COOKIE

This interview is conducted for the purposes of introducing people to the function and work in our Culture department, primarily driven by CookiEvee, the Deputy Culture officer and Exarch of the New Pacific Order!

Good morning, Cookie. It’s good to have you with us. Can you start by telling us a little about yourself, why you joined, and what your career has been like in NPO so far?
Hmm let's see, I joined just over 2 years ago, brought to NS by a friend. I immediately applied to the NPO and have spent the rest of my career in it. I started in the roleplay section, but found that wasn't where I thrived so didn't stay for long. After this, I joined the Legio Pacificus (now Legio Pacifica) and have had the pleasure of witnessing a few change of leaders, as well as training many people. In my time in the Legio, I created my bot, Legionarius, which is still up and running and forever improving. About a year ago, I became a governor (now Exarch) allowing me to help the wider areas of the NPO. It is truly a pleasure. More recently, I became the lead of NS Culture; working with my fellow peers to bring entertainment to Pacificans, and the rest of NS. This is a role that never gets old, the variety of people you meet is just breath-taking and continue to fascinate me.

What is your favorite part of Culture? What inspires you to keep working in a position that many people across many regions can find very difficult?
My favourite part of Culture, has got to be the collaboration with the other members of Culture. The creativity from the members of it is remarkable, and culture wouldn't be able to thrive without them. Just seeing what culture can produce is enough for me to continue working. Although the job can be quite taxing, it's always pleasant to know that the work we do, directly effects and brings joy to other people. For me, it's important to note that whilst it may not seem worth the effort you put into it; if it can make one person even slightly more happy, it can change the world.

What events have you organized or helped organize? Which events have been your favorite?
Some of the events I've helped organise was the Pokemon festival, the Spooktober festival of 2019, and the Festival of the night starting on the 26th of may (2020). Whilst it hasn't yet begun, the Festival of the Night is already my favourite. This is because I've already begun to see more feedback, this means that it has the ability to bring joy to more people. As well as the fact that it has already brought a wave of increased culture to the region.

What do you think is the most difficult part of being the de facto head organizer of the Culture department?
The primary difficulty of being head of Culture, is that when you’re handling such a large number of people with something like this, it is very easy to by mistake upset someone. It is very hard to stop this and you just have to hope that this doesn't happen.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future in Culture? Do you have any special goals in mind?
Culture is a very dynamic committee, constantly changing, this makes it very hard to have fixed goals. However I would like to make Culture more autonomous than it currently is, allowing more people to input their opinions and create new ideas. In the nearer future, I want to make Culture more accessible to everyone, so that it's not just the minority of groups that get the spotlight; opening up the floor to musicians, logicians and the like.

What do you most look forward to in the future as a Pacifican?
I look forward to meeting many other Pacificans and making friends with them, sharing ideas, opinions and conversations. It's always fun to see a new person pop by and start changing things up. One person has the ability to impact many others, and I look forward to meeting them!

Do you have anything that you would like to tell new Pacificans?
I'd tell new Pacificans to always be considerate, and trustworthy. With these 2 things you can be the greatest version of yourselves, for yourself and for Pacifica! With that said, don't be shy, and never compromise yourself. It is very important to have good virtues that you stay true to. And have fun!
