Establishment of the Peerage
King Albert I has issued a royal proclamation establishing the orders of Peerage. There shall be five ranks:Duke
Marquess
Earl/Count
Viscount
Baron
Those awarded the rank Baron, Viscount, Earl (Countess if female) and Marquess are to be addressed by their title, or informally addressed “Lord” or “Lady”.
Those awarded the title of Duke shall be addressed as “Your Grace”, or informally addressed “Lord” or “Lady”
The titles are to be awarded by personal gift of the sovereign. Those given a rank shall be automatically given a spot in the House of Lords, the de facto seat of the Peerage.
