The National Day of Surikatia

The National Day of Surikatia is 1st January.
This was decided by the Emperor who got only Yes for the suggestion
from the Parlament. The reason to choose this date is that it means the beginning
of a new, (hopefully), prosperous and good year for the country and all of itīs citizens.

The National Day is celebrated with fireworks, conveniently sent off at Midnight 31st Dec.

It is a day when families dress up and get together with relatives from near and far away to eat a traditional
dish with potatoes as the main ingredient. The big dinner is in the afternoon and it is probably the day with
the most traffic in Surikatia.

The flag of Surikatia can be seen everywhere and it is considered like really bad manners to have a flagpole
that does not have the flag of Surikatia at the top this day.

Earlier the day was often celebrated by military parades, but to give also the soldiers a chance to go home to
their families this day, the parades are not a common thing these days.

What is common, though, is that the radio plays a lot of patriotic songs and the National Anthem this day.

The Emperor makes a speech on TV that lasts one hour. He speaks about what has been achieved the
past year and what is expected from the coming year. Trying to give a huge boost of motivation
for all the citizens. After the speech the National Anthem is played by the National Orchestra and that is also
broadcasted from Rio Kabina. It is almost seen as an obligation to watch this speech. It is dicussed at
working places, in following TV debates and in the news and someone who does not seem to know what the
Emperor spoke about is looked upon as almost being against the country.

Most younger people keep waiting for the annual rock show that is broadcasted at 22.00 until 00.00, where
the most popular bands and singers perform their hits from latest year.

The phrase used mostly on this day is the phrase "Natiun Lara, Natiun Sikuria", ( = Our Country, Our
Safety ) and that is also the title of the National Anthem.
