HISTORY

The first Sulphurites were sailors on a ship carrying a load of hogs, shipwrecked nearly on the beach itself due solely to the incompetence of the ship's drunk captain. So close that the more industrious swine managed to swim to shore along with the sailors, who promptly mutinied and hung the captain. Mercifully, he was feeling no pain at that point. The sailors then had ample food due to the hogs, but were in desperate need of fresh water supplies.
They searched for days but were despairing of hope, until on the night of the full moon a young sailor led the group in a prayer of desperation at the communal bonfire on the beach. Soon after, an unkindness of ravens landed on the beach and created a great commotion. The ravens took flight as the sailors approached and headed inland, pursued by the sailors. Following the raven calls, the sailors pushed through the tangled vegetation only to discover a beautiful moonlit pool fed by a natural sulphur spring.
The foundation for survival, and the nation of South Sulphur, was thus laid. The sailors gave great thanks to God and built their new settlement, Hogsport, between the landing beach and the life-sustaining spring.
