Chunjuan Government Orders Impromptu "New Civil School Initiative" to Protect Civilians in Case of War
By Mako Eijeong (栄정 마子)12 July 2057

Faced with the threat of military intrusion upon its borders, the Government of Chunju has instituted measures in a coordinated attempt to spare its civilian population from the worst of a potential war with any of its neighbors. The Ministry of Education, tasked by Prime Minister Sato Irangu and with widespread support from the legislature, announced today that it would implement a "new educational regiment with the aim of safeguarding the children, students, teachers, and other academic workers of Chunju from the ceaseless violence of war." These new additions to the standard school curriculum include daily duck-and-cover drills, mandatory self-defense classes, and an increased focus in social studies classes on the nations bordering Chunju, specifically Kunil, Chaoha, and Dobarotsi. Furthermore, the government has ordered the nationwide construction of underground shelters and reinforced border fences for the largest schools in every municipality. The sweeping mandates came in response to Kunilian air patrols over its border with Chunju, which have been widely broadcasted across the country. Relations between the two countries have been strained due to Kunil's possession of nuclear warheads, the presence of Hradunan political exiles in Chunju, and the active state of conflict between the CPA militia and brigades of the Chunjuan Armed Forces.

Ran Gun Nationalists Plant Flags on Aogu
By Shūjong Uno (運오 修종)11 July 2057

At 9:20 AM Sōryodō Standard Time, a group of four flag-carrying men crossed the Teijo Strait and landed on the northern shore of Aogu island, administered as part of the Hanguk-Nipponese territory of Sōryodō. The men arrived via an unmarked Ran Gun-registered fishing vessel from the small coastal town of Taiju, Ran Gun, and proceeded to plant multiple flags along the length of the beach. The Hanguk-Nipponese Government, viewing these acts as a civilian intrusion upon its sovereign territory, sent the Coast Guard and apprehended the four men. Self-proclaimed "nationalists," the men were identified by authorities as members of the "Guardsmen's Society," an organization renowned for promoting Ran Gun ultranationalism and the idea of a "greater hegemonic state" based on an archaic tribute system with the King of Ran Gun at its center. Its stated mission is to "bring light to the disparate peoples of Orientalis" by "assembling the actors and instruments necessary to instate the King's perfect government." The organization is effectively a medium by which underlying the nationalist sentiments of Ran Gun are transformed into action as its supporter base draws from a wide portion of the population of the country. While not legally associated with the royal government of Ran Gun, the Guardsmen's Society receives funding from several prominent statesmen part of the King Sānjiun, namely Minister of Rites Sui Ro-An, Minister of War Yan Ju-Ao, and Censorate Minister Gunye Ruchun.

The Communist Party of Waiku: "Our Country is Glad to be a Member of the Global Community"
By San Vung Ho10 July 2057

This was the opening statement to a speech by General Secretary Phourang'aring to the audience of the Annual Party Congress, also attended by international observers and independent members of the Waikuwan parliament. The congress stressed on the importance of globalization, discussing topics that have led many to believe that Waiku is taking down its walls and embracing the unipolar world. "I'd say it this way: The Waikuwans no longer believe that communism develops perpendicularly to global politics, and now they're looking to develop their communism parallel to the reality of a non-communist majority world since the fall of the Soviets," noted one of the international observers that attended the congress, Joszef Erzsebet, "it's a textbook example of a government publically adapting to the changing times with an eye for the future." Integration into the international community and the creation of a "truly global mindset" going forward will likely serve the Waikuwan state well economically, especially with regards to states generally opposed to all socialist-branded movements, namely Hanguk-Nippon, Dai Viet, and Cochinchina: the original core members of the Asian Strategic Treaty Organization (ASTO). However, Waiku will most conceivably face continued diplomatic hurdles in attempting to reach out to the aforementioned countries; antithetical ideological interests and, more importantly, conflicting geopolitical goals are ever-present challenges to fulfilling the Communist Party's statement.

Khun Hein Institutes "Decree Síp Sǎung," Thoroughly Revising Constitution and Government Structure
By Saedaira Kyūgang (새平 久강)9 July 2057

President and Minister of Defense Khun Hein of Mong Yang has issued an emergency constitutional revision decree with the approval of his country's legislature, the Lūt Tàu, and a "constitutional" ruling by the Constitutional Court. The order, dubbed "Decree Síp Sǎung" or "Decree Twelve," effectively bans all forms of public organization, tightens free speech and press regulations, requires all parties represented in the Lūt Tàu be approved by the state's party registry, and modifies the requirements for bills to be signed into law, now requiring a 1/2 majority threshold for authorization instead of 3/4. With the passing of this decree, Khun Hein has firmly established control over the means by which he can exercise power on a national level. The central component of his political machine, the Lūt Tàu, is staffed with close affiliates of the president and amicable ideologues. Khun Hein faces no governmental opposition aside from the anti-establishment power blocs with which his soft-coup supporters had to share power during the strained tenure of former President Sai Gyi. Opposition groups outside of Mong Yang and international observers noted that Khun Hein's likely next moves are to rewrite election laws and bid for a substantial multilateral trade agreement with China and India, yet chances of any treaty coming to fruition are low as both countries have condemned his seizure of power.

HNAXI Announces Official Countdown to Ambitious Mission to Titan
By Sejun Asahi (旭 せ준)7 July 2057

The Hanguk-Nippon Aerospace Exploration Institute (HNAXI) has announced that the mission to Titan, the Hodo (帆돛) probe, is scheduled to officially launch in August of this year. Titan is Saturn's largest moon and the second-largest moon in the solar system. Its surface, frost-laiden with ice, is shrouded by a thick organonitrogen atmosphere; it's the only of its kind in the solar system. Following the deorbiting and termination of NASA's well-renowned Cassini-Huygens mission, no other major mission to the saturnian system has been undertaken by any space agency, private or national. That is, until HNAXI disclosed at a major press conference almost a decade ago that its planners had begun devising the next largest mission to Titan since 2004. In a similar vein to Cassini-Huygens, the Hodo mission will consist of one orbiter and one robotic space probe. However, unlike Huygens, Hodo's probe is specifically designed to operate in Titan's methane lakes. The probe is also set to have a camera much upgraded compared to that of Huygens, an instrument that measures liquid composition, and a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer—a tool to measure atmospheric composition. Shōya Hachigaya (하ち谷 庄야), the chief administrator of HNAXI, expressed ardent enthusiasm about the project, saying that "we've never been this ready to explore space once again."

Shingo Pledges to Continue Security Commitments in the Asia-Pacific, Welcomes Bangladesh as a "Strategic Outreach Partner"
By Iuga Yuchi (유内 井가)6 July 2057

At today's second round of talks of the Hanoi ASTO Summit, Shingo pledged the continued commitment of the Imperial Army and Navy forces to the cause of collective security in the Asia-Pacific region, and welcomed Ayanna Chakravarty, the Bangladeshi Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the pact as a partner in maintaining peace. By garnering resounding confidence from the other national delegations, Shingo has achieved several diplomatic goals including staking his bid to a future position as Secretary General of ASTO and reassuring other regional powers of Hanguk-Nippon's military flexibility. Moreover, he oversaw the signing of upgraded association agreements with the Indian, Australian, and New Zealander delegations. Most importantly, however, was his direction of the negotiations with the Bangladeshi envoys as a minister plenipotentiary, which ultimately led to their signature of the ascension agreement. Following ratification by the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh will become an observer state to the ASTO Parliamentary Assembly. Admission to the Parliamentary Assembly will resolutely link Bangladesh to the ASTO bloc and grant Bangladesh's government access to key policy discussions on issues in return for political and practical assistance for furthering democracy in the region. Shingo celebrated the signature, stating, "we're getting closer to mutual multinational understanding, one step at a time."

Key Takeaways from the First Day of the 2057 Hanoi Summit
By Tōgyeong Sesaki (세咲 とう경)5 July 2057
Today, ASTO leaders gathered in Hanoi, Dai Viet to discuss important issues and challenges in the region that implicated the interests of its members, those mainly being the recent protests in Mong Yang, warming relations between North and South Laos, the Moro insurgency in the Philippines, government instability in West Papua, and the military movements of Eurasia in the past decade. The governments outlined new goals concerning increased peacekeeping cooperation, the conservation of democratic institutions, and formulating common foreign policy goals. Delegations from outside of the alliance, Australian, Chinese, Indian, Nepali, and New Zealander, also participated in the conference, thus underpinning future cooperation. The twelve members of ASTO, Hanguk-Nippon, Dai Viet, the Philippines, Cochinchina, Cambodia, Thailand, Chiangari, the Riau Sultanate, Brunei, Malaysia, North Laos, and the United States, together constitute the largest major power bloc in the Asia-Pacific region. The governments of the member states jointly announced that all other nations in the region are invited to upgrade any bilateral treaties into full associations covered by the 1960 Hanoi Convention establishing the pact. At the summit, Shingo called for "a collective warning against Eurasia" for their military build-up along their borders with the northern Caucasian states of Circassia, North Ossetia, Dagestan, and Chechnya. Moreover, in response to current flashpoints of violent conflict in the world, he pressed that "preliminary action is necessary for safeguarding peace, no matter the country." These moves are reportedly a tenet of his diplomatic outreach program; Shingo has made clear that he expects bolstered commitments from member states, particularly North Laos as the ongoing Laotian peace resettlements are—according to the judgement of international observers—still prone to breaking down.

The Population of the Tobun Arc is Complete, Emperor Sesato Says
By Seojiro Tōyagi (郎製 서次)3 July 2057
This morning, His Majesty Emperor Sesato announced to the public that the mission to populate the Tobun Arc, a group of five islands north of Junpo in the Rioku Sea, has been completed. The islands, currently administered directly from the government in Daekagaya, Sōryodō, are set to be detached from Daekagaya and given their own local administration akin to that of Jushūshotōdo and the Saki Islands. Home to ~15,000, government appointments are set to begin the following week once the administrative machinery is put in place. The archipelago has been used as a naval junction between Junpo and Taigama for the Imperial Navy to conduct reconnaissance operations and research. It is expected that resource-scouting surveys are to begin in the coming weeks or months. From the perspective of financial authorities, the decision marks a key step forward in their vision of north Orientalis "trade network" centered around the Ryudong Passage. The Ministry of Trade and Commerce has proclaimed that they are "eagerly analysing the possibility of creating a new maritime trade corridor," which runs through Taigama to Fankuwo. Most notably, this plan excludes routing trade to Xat Phon, a colony run by the Waikuwan military.

Localist Parties Band Together Ahead of Hokoanese Elections
By Testuji Bak (박 哲지)3 July 2057
A number of political parties in Hokoan that collectively describe themselves as localist announced the creation of a "united front" in the upcoming 2058 Hokoanese legislative elections. The leader of the localist People's Innovation Party, Ma Huizhong (马惠忠), proclaimed to a crowd of his supporters in Ryōmun Square that "legislative predominance is a crucial step towards the actualization of policies for Hokoan, by Hokoanese." He pressed the necessity of associating with other localist organizations under a big-tent party, saying that "nation transcends ideological boundaries" and "Hokoan's republic should sanction leaders who fight for it, not against." Provincial polling has revealed that the localist front is fighting an uphill battle in terms of garnering popular approval as in all but Hotoragashira, Hobonggenwon, and Anshiseo municipalities Sinjōist candidates lead. The act of unification, however, may affect voter opinions as ideological platforms have been sidelined in favor of a catch-all message: Hokoan for the Hokoanese. Look no further than social media for evidence of this shift in outlook. An increasing number of respondents to online surveys have claimed that they "support localist policies." Furthermore, debates on reforming the Hokoanese education system have made the front pages of web forums and publications such as Jokyō, however this is likely a byproduct of an increased attention to the issues central to the upcoming election. Nevertheless, the localists' regrouping is projected to take its full effect closer to the election dates. Neither a concrete strategy, nor a division of intraparty responsibilities has been, reportedly, decided upon. The leaders of the united front's constituent organizations are heavily divided on their post-election agenda.

Kamchakka's Border with Eurasia Needs to be Demilitarized Sooner, Rather than Later
By Okko-n Pychik (ピ치크 억こん)2 July 2057

It's time for Cold War-era military concerns to be put aside. The "red menace" so often cited by Hanguk-Nipponese government addresses to the public is no longer red, nor is it a "menace," or even a remote threat to national security. The hundred-or-so kilometers of stringent fencing and frequent border posts spread across the neck of the Kamchakka Peninsula has deterred the growth of the local economy: it's unsustainable. The province relies largely on shipments of supplies coming from the mainland to supplement the military's presence at the border, yet this campaign to "defend the northern frontier" has gone absolutely nowhere ever since the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. The central government must give the residents of Kamchakka a chance to prove that their land isn't just a subzero outpost, but a potential platform for the country to exercise its authority over an ever-expanding global economy.

Riuju Sango, Chairman of the Junpoese Security Assembly, Officially Opens Junpo's First High-Speed Railway
By Shicho Handa (한田 し초)2 July 2057

Riuju Sango, the Chairman of the Junpoese Security Assembly, has officially opened Osago-1, Junpo's first rail line open to the public. It begins at the western port city of Ojodo, then heads through the capital city, Hyobukki, then Pokkano, Pauno, Sajinto, and lastly the line ends at Kinjo. The rail's construction is the first step of Sango's plans to reshape the nature of land transport in Junpo so that the movement of goods and people can be more closely monitored. He cited the ongoing insurgency against the Raikkaidan as his motive to restrict the activity of privately-owned rail companies in the region. He noted that the rail companies are "capable of building and maintaining world-renowned lines, but cannot be relied on for administering law of the highest order."

Mong Yang Presidential Elections End in Protest
By Saedaira Kyūgang (새平 久강)3 July 2057

Approximately 4,500 took to the streets of Mohnyin, the capital of Mong Yang, last thursday to protest the mid-June presidential elections in which Sao Mon Kaung, the leader of the anti-establishment New Democracy Movement lost by 129 votes to the military-sponsored Khun Hein. Khun Hein, an independent, ran as the incumbent. He has been the acting Minister of Defense of Mong Yang ever since his installation to the position in 2050. As the Minister of Defense, he played to the interests of the country's largest neighbors, China and India, in hopes of turning Mong Yang into a "trading hub" in line with Chinese Premier Luo Guowei's vision of a "southern trade corridor" running through Yunnan province into Mong Yang. Khun Hein's campaign promises fit in line with this proposition, yet the majority of electorate was strongly against. Consequently, the electoral results sparked ire among much of the country's rural population. Countryside farmers, long alienated from the verdicts of outward-looking urban policymakers, make up the majority of the demonstrators marching on the capital. Khun Hein has refused to answer their allegations of electoral fraud and voter suppression.

Shingo has the opportunity to garner support from other leaders in the Asia-Pacific region at the ASTO summit to be held on July 5, yet novel questions about the Imperial Army's campaigns in distant lands have impeded his success on the international stage. Observers from abroad have concluded that the Hanguk-Nipponese delegation must reassure attending nations that the state's defense commitments are viable and beneficial for regional security, even during lasting peace. Representatives of the League of Nations and non-ASTO states such as India, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Nepal are set to attend the security conference.

2057 Hanguk-Nipponese Rainy Season in Full Swing Across the Country

With the rain and monsoons come numerous cases of property damage across the country. The lowland regions of South Jeolla and Saga have been hit the hardest, clocking at over 55 millimeters of rain per hour—ranging at ~200mm of rain for the entire month. This is normal for much of Hanguk-Nippon, yet mayors of the most affected areas still urge residents to exercise daily activities with caution under these drenched conditions.

Data-Gatherers Scramble to Fan Tuwan, Fankuwo, to Update Fifty Year-Old Statistics
By Robert Picanave28 June 2057
The island-based country of Fankuwo in the region of Orientalis that they themselves call "Hanai Saikang" has officially opened up, inviting foreigners in to conduct some kind of tourism. "We've observed for years heightened amounts of construction in Fankuwo," quoted Eric Reichmann, one of the members of the international team of data-gatherers that entered the country where morning just began. He noted that "those construction projects were in preparation for Fankuwoan 'opening-up.' Some are more obvious in their intent, like larger harbors with above-domestic traffic capacity and even larger airports with longer runways. They tried to turn their country into a tourist attraction in a decade—and from what our team has seen so far—have done this well." The team can finally update the data on Fankuwo that you've always seen on Wikipedia as tagged with "highly inaccurate," "likely misleading," or completely "unknown."

Debates on Waiku's Category in the Freedom of the World Index: Mostly or Partly Free?
By San Vung Ho27 June 2057
The effects of "National Renovation," the process Waikuwan liberalisation, the "perestroika" and "glasnost" that the Soviets failed to implement but the Waikuwans are enjoying the benefits of, are now being measured by the American Freedom of the World Index. Throughout the years, Waiku rose from being not free to partly free, and with the recent recognition and protection of LGBT+ rights, the expert calculators of indices are debating whether Waiku has truly upgraded into a "mostly free" country or remains within the yellow "partly free" category. Observers have noted that while the increase in civil liberties afforded to citizens of Waiku has provided a strong case for increasing the country's rank, ever-present state surveillance and the predominance of the Communist Party has degraded the opinions of the country for many focused more on political freedom.

Fankuwoan Society Introduced to Smartphones, Work Begins on Internet Integration
By Hyoki Amagasaki (尼가崎 효き)27 June 2057
Among the first imports of Hanguk-Nipponese products were smartphones, technology not one Fankuwoan had ever seen before. What we take for granted today in the grasp of our palms and in the blanketing warmth of our pockets has been glorified by Fankuwo's Ministry of Explanation and Enlightenment as a "glorious machine and deadly weapon of information." Observers abroad suspect that the ministry will begin instituting internet censorship, a form of suppression it has never practiced before. A contract has been made with Hanguk-Nipponese telecommunications corporation HNT+ to install fiber optics and telecom towers. This act of foreign outreach to the now unbolted Fankuwoan state is part of the Hanguk-Nipponese Government's stated program to establish and solidify working relations with the country. Outside of telecommunications, the Minister of Trade and Commerce Kaga Akijo (明조 加가) pressed that Hanguk-Nipponese "technology sharing" with Fankuwo be expanded to infrastructure and the development of potential export sectors. "Fankuwo has the opportunity to claim its place in the global economy," Akijo stated last Saturday in a press conference. "Mutual cooperation between all peoples is the first step to creating a more beneficial, inclusive, and concerted financial system based on shared national interests. I have confidence in the Fankuwoans; they understand what it means to keep peace close to heart."

A Line Must be Drawn, Or Else
By Sanghō Genhwa (原화 상法)23 June 2057
Hanguk-Nippon needs to make it clear to the government of Waiku that it has dominion over Orientalis through actions, rather than words. Much of the interior of southeast Orientalis remains a mystery to both Hanguk-Nippon and Waiku, but this is not to last for more than at least two years. Efforts to expand Konkigo have been scaled back significantly under the Imperial Navy's preferential orders, which have stunted the nation's search for resources and its mission to sew homegrown Sinjōism in newly discovered societies. The lack of progress is frankly absurd for the commitments that the state has made to the project in Orientalis. Meanwhile, the Waikuwan military has taken the reigns to establish an effective administration over a much larger part of the southeast coastline. Two separate rivers have been surveyed in Xat Phon as opposed to just Kyuji and its tributary Gokkin, which haven't brought the expedition any closer to larger inland states. Granted, neither has happened in Xat Phon, nevertheless the size of the region provides the Waikuwan government with ample opportunity and multiple directions for expansion. This is the main reason why Hanguk-Nippon's chance to acquire a more diverse raw resource pool is slipping.

Yesterday's resulting session, called in conjunction with the Junpoese Council Consulate, outlined a new agenda for combatting the Raikkaidan's terrorism. Tekiu Kano, the Governor of Junpo and the leader of the Junpoese Republican Party, expressed dire concerns over the feasibility of "uprooting the insurgency." He noted that "the movement is a product of a fanaticism with cleansed history" due to "the failure of the old monarchy to hold its grip firm on the hearts of the people... in any case, the Raikkaidan must be handled with the confidence of the people of support peace and justice." Governor Kano went on to further question the legitimacy of the pre-Hanguk-Nipponese royal government.

Sinjōists and Localists Converge before the Approaching 2058 Elections
By Fang Daiyu (方黛玉)22 June 2057
The Sinjōists and Localists, now the two largest parties that have taken part in every legislative election of the past two decades, have begun their preliminary campaigning. Since the most recent elections in 2053, the two parties have clashed repeatedly over issues pertaining to the integration of Hokoan, Hanguk-Nippon's least ethnically homogenous province, into the wider empire. The gradual transition of Hokoan from an Autonomous Special City to a full province has been the main question the two parties have debated, with the Sinjōists favoring the further integration of Hokoanese schools into the central education system, the expansion of Imperial Navy facilities in Chenglun (Seiryun) municipality, and the conversion of Hokoan's "constitution" into a "local charter" that grants more legislative powers to the government in Hyosaki, while the Localists advocate the maintenance of Buddhism as "the religion of [their] nation," more equal representation of Malays and Dayaks in government, and an increased participation of Hokoanese in the civilian military decision-making process. The opposing groups share similar stances on immigration, finance, and the upkeep of a strong military presence.
